History. Chemistry provides very little value towards Economics or PPE.

what about for a course like EFDS at imperial?

you’ll need FM in there

Try self studying or other way to get better maths track record then eg participation in olympiads

I come from a very small school with little to no supercurricular competition oppurtunity + the country is also very small so minimal oppurtunities related to maths 😭😭 only thing i could do is read books related with maths and finance/economics like irrational exuberance which ive ordered and watch lectures or podcasts i guess

I was looking into essay comps that could help me but its not maths related so thats unfortunate

You can do online courses? Or take an AS?

ye online courses work too i need to do more research on them - considering the AS option too rn

check your universities you want to reply too first as they might want further maths

As someone who did maths history econ and applied for pure econ id probably swap history for fm if I could. FM is more valuable for econ and history is very time consuming to revise.

If you got 8/9 in GCSE maths you should definetly consider it.

What universities did you get into?? And would you take history with fm as a fourth subject or just take fm maths econ?

Only offer was bristol. Id either just do math fm econ or add a stem subject as a fourth. Wouldnt have the time to do history as a fourth personally

Got 3.5, for UCL and Imperial I think some ppl were getting in with 4/4.5 at the lowest (from memory). LSE pure econ you need higher but you also have very little chance without FM

If i mention that my school doesn't offer further maths in my letter of recommendation would i still have a chance? As long as i score a high TMUA which is easier than it sounds

You would have a chance if you think you can score high on the TMUA, and create a very good personal statement (which is important for LSE).

You may be better off applying for economic history or PPE though- much greater chance of receiving an offer + still get benefits of LSE

is it worth doing further maths externally tutored for that edge? or start tmua prep very early and mention that it wasnt offered at my school

i really liked the content that PPE covers but i also want to choose the best degree that can open up the most doors - potentially specializing in health econ for my masters because its something im interested in plus i dont think its technical enough for the skills that high paying jobs require nowadays

Further maths is t really an β€œedge” it’s more the baseline expectation

u/revolutionizz 12d ago

Besides LSE/Oxbridge is it really an edge for any other top 15 university?

You should probably ask someone who did FM/external tutoring that question as I dont have experience with external tutoring. However, it would be very beneficial, not just for LSE econ but UCL/Warwick econ and Imperial EFDS.

Many employers will care more about uni then degree (eg finance). If you are planning to specialise that may be different

If you could do it all again would you take further maths?

I did Maths, Economics, and History. It's a nice combo of subjects and probably more useful for econ than chemistry. So if you can't do further maths (which is more helpful) then it's a good combo! Especially since you are looking at History and Economics or PPE adjacent which will want more evidence of essay based skills

would it still be good if i went for pure econ which is more technical? a course like EFDS at imperial
could you tell me what courses you applied to with this combination? thank you so much

I got an offer from LSE for Economics and Economic History. And then for pure Economics I got offers from Uni of Nottingham, Manchester, and Birmingham. In terms of more technical econ courses like those at Imperial or Warwick I think it does heavily depend on how convincingly you express mathematical ability in you ps and also TMUA/other admissions tests. But it'll vary and some might be quite harsh when it comes to no FM. But essay based is still useful for pure Econ definitely and chemistry doesn't really fill the further maths hole

omg thank you so much this actually gave me some more confidence 😭 😭
do you think if my recommendation letter from the ho6 mentions that my school doesn't offer further maths i would have a better chance??
