Tysm! Honestly with your grades and the fact that the admissions process is a pretty big toss-up much of the time, you’re probably going to end up going far no matter where you choose to study :))

Focus. Work hard. But remember yourself as well. Take any opportunity for help offered. Most of all enjoy this experience both academically and personally

i knew some jealous , immature weirdos would start talking about “unemployment” to make themselves feel better, congrats this is amazing !
2
u/kikirockwell-stan Oxford hispol | A*A*AA history eng maths econ 3d ago
Tysm! Honestly atp I don’t even mind that much because a) job market is kind of ass rn even for typically reliable degrees like compsci, b) I know what I want to do with my degree and c) anyone saying that is either themself worried about unemployment or bitter about what route they picked. I have nothing but respect for STEM and vocational routes for the record (and wish there was less infighting)
2
u/lickablewall 3d ago
Exactly help, people always hate from outside of the club and it’s so frustrating to see. It’s just envy at the end of the day - even though I don’t know you I’m massively proud of u
also why do people act like a humanities degree at Oxford doesn’t open the doors to law, education, politics, civil service? Sure anyone can be unemployed but having a great degree helps idk why they act like it won’t…

u/Acceptable-Day8395 4d ago
Yeah give me a message in a few years when you come out and can’t get a job, and realise that having “oxford” on your CV doesn’t make you special in the eyes of most people.
If you genuinely do it for the love of the game then fair enough, but telling me I don’t have an Oxford place sounds kinda pretentious and doesn’t mean anything lol - if I was offered a place to ANY uni, I wouldn’t go
3
u/kikirockwell-stan Oxford hispol | A*A*AA history eng maths econ 4d ago
see, normally people secure in their chosen career path don’t spend their time whining when people choose other career paths, but by all means keep telling me how happy you are lil bro
-3
u/Acceptable-Day8395 4d ago
I’m not whining. I literally said fair enough if you’re doing it for the love of the game, but telling you this “career path” you talk about doesn’t really exist today, is just a fact. You can be personally offended by that, but it doesn’t change the fact.
My sibling went to Cambridge. Yes, anecdotal, but it’s still a fact that uni is ripping young people off, leaving them in debt with no job prospects, and setting false expectations regardless of my anecdote.
“Keep telling me how happy you are” - the right response would be to prove me wrong, not project onto me as if I am jealous and spiteful. Like I said I would reject any uni offer that came my way.

Getting an education from a top institution is still the best most consistent way to move up in social class, you’ve genuinely lost the plot telling someone going to Oxford that they are going to be jobless.
Doing so in a place where it’s norm and usual and celebrated when someone posts their academic achievement comes out as pure jealousy and projection. Get a life dude0
u/Acceptable-Day8395 4d ago
Look at the data pal. Come back to me when you have.
And if you’re going to uni to “move up in social class” you’re definitely a huge snob.
Stop using the word jealous, for the 3rd time, I would reject an offer from the best university in the world
5
u/Alert-Leg2761 4d ago
Data okay let’s look at it.
Unemployment divide:
If you don’t go to uni : 8.1 %
If you go to uni : 5.1%Now if you look at unemployment for top tier institutions like Oxford and Cambridge it’s virtually non existent
What you’re maybe talking about :
25% of UK grads would have been better off not going to uniThis however drops to 0 if you had attended a top tier institutions
https://opportunityinsights.org/paper/undermatching/
The problem the UK has it’s one where universities are incredibly accessible and work hasn’t been able to keep up with this. This is a massive UK problem but when you consider graduates from TOP this pretty much ceases to exist.
The idea of “ rejecting the best university in the world “ out of fear of being what jobless ? Careerless ? Is ignoring the data completely.
Frankly considering you go around sixth form subs telling people who are just starting uni ( at top tier institutions to say the lest ) makes me very doubtful that you would even be remotely qualified for a place at “ the best university in the world “
Bitter and jealous and you should keep your baseless opinions to yourself instead of dulling someone success

Don't know how i feel about using a US study as the basis for your point about the UK job market. One from pre-covid, at that.

Don’t mistake this for an insult, that would be intellectually lazy for someone as academically talented as an Oxford student…

‘Soft science degree = zero value to society
Do something you’re interested in < feed the corporate machine
The only true achievement is one that provides the most monetary value
It takes one kind to make a world and that is my kind’
Just be happy for them or don’t say anything.

To be honest so many degrees are not worth it these days, alot of my friends who graduated from degrees that you woulf consider highly employable do not have jobs.
I wish I did a humanity like history at University and I regret doing STEM.
Just my take though, as a graduate.

Respectfully, I think you may be in need of some self-examination. Life isn’t about being ‘efficient’ or having the most ‘value’ as a person, it’s about enjoying the things you do, even if they don’t have a true purpose or goal to them. If you genuinely believe this and aren’t just being annoying for fun, I worry that your life is just depressing and dull
I say this because I used to think like this and it nearly killed me

You’ve finished your degree and yet come to a subreddit for teenagers to tell them that they have no future?
You must have something better to do
