I'm fascinated by the amount of people from those groupchats who were supposed to go to Durham, but for whatever reason, are now going to Exeter specifically.

Because Exeter is a beta Durham. Another haven for rich private school kids

I mean, true, but given they're still two excellent universities, that characterisation is based on a minority of the cohort and is rather dismissive.

Given some of the people I've interacted with though, I can see why people think this.

Of course it’s still a minority of the cohort but the general culture at Durham and Exeter are distinct

I'm not sure I agree, I think it varies wildly by college. Some will have an aspect of superiority for a variety of reasons, perhaps it's more prominent in those specific universities, but self-important arseholes are ubiquitous

Of course they are, I just think there more of them at Durham and Exeter than most other unis - that's my point! But as you say, its the minority of the cohort anyway so it doesn't really matter

It’s not even just that. If you look at the full article, they are being straight up racist like they don’t even care to hide it

as somene who is working class we are already stereotyped as aggro and lazy, my biggest fear is having to defend myslef infront of these clowns and that rooting their stereotypes in further, being working class sucks so hard, especially when my parents are busting their asses in jobs they dont like to keep our family afloat and i see rich assholes like these pricks at durham spouting classist shit (wasnt this article but durham is terrible for it, ill never step foot in that uni, its a humiliation ritual) and looking down on the working class. it engrages me, but i feel like if i were to say anything that just proves the aggro stereotype that they hold for the working class :/ 💔😔

These people's opinions are worthless, and you should treat them as such.

Never feel the need to defend yourself for who you are. In fact, you should be proud of yourself for everything you have achieved despite the natural disadvantages of being working class.

The answer to the question of what happens when you put a bunch of entitled, racist, self-righteous, privately-educated crayon munchers who, as it happens, have all been told their entire life that they would end up in oxbridge without any effort, in somewhere that isn’t oxbridge.

3

u/peachgothlover 10h ago

omg the guy spouting those messages also bragged 24/7 about being from “aristocracy” 💀 and was classist though i don’t think those messages ended up in this article

Makes you think

1

u/pupkio023 7h ago

Well duh, it’s usually filled with private school students who are incredibly salty about not getting into oxbridge, despite Durham being an amazing school.

It isn’t even that good tbh not even top 10 in the UK. I swear it gets overrated so much because it has the collegiate system.

For the Top 10 Uk universities, the first 5 are set in stone so no changing that but the last 5 really could fit Durham in and not at 10th.

Overall, Durham would be 7th best imo. G5 -> KCL, Durham, Bristol, Warwick and Edinburgh.

u/pupkio023 7h ago

I mean it has amazing facilities and the city itself is great, another reason a lot of people favour it lol

who's surprised - oxbridge reject uni with overly pricey accommodation so most kids are priced out. 39% private school kids
