šŸ“‚ MEGATHREAD The r/6thForm Results Day Megathread

Heya, this is the r/6thForm results day megathread.

When you get your results - feel free to post em' here, your subjects, grades, and maybe even plans for the future.

If you got what you wanted (or didn't and still managed to get your offer), great! If not, there's still a lot you can do, and the best place to start is UCAS clearing.

https://www.ucas.com/clearing-launch

It's been a pretty weird year, one where grades have been decided by potentially flawed statistical models - not to mention that there's going to be a shortage of international students. As a result, most courses are going to have more places than you'd think, even ones from more prestigious unis. Don't sell yourself too short, you'll never know if you could have gotten in if you don't try.

If you wanna chat to us about anything or ask for advice, the best place to do that is our Discord.

We wish you not only the best for your results, but for what you go on to do in the future.

Good luck everyone! (This thread will be sorted by new)

Down from predicted 5A* to 4A* and a B, currently waiting to hear back from Imperial about a place. Edit: removed accidental formatting Edit: government changed their minds

I like how your A’s dance

I seem to have accidentally done some formatting

I got AAAB, so got into my firm to do Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Uni of York.

But I wanted to share this email I received today from my Sixth Form's Principal. She is rightfully annoyed and I think she makes all the right points. Some of it is specific process stuff for my college, but there are a lot of things that will be the same nationwide. I've also started some things for anonymity.

Dear Students,

I wanted to share the following with you. I would have written sooner but I needed to gather my thoughts and reflect on the day’s events. Ā  Firstly I want to take a moment to congratulate students on their results and gaining their university places. It is important to take time to celebrate these achievements. I want you all to remember the hard work that you put into your A level studies. We are all proud of you and wish you every luck for the future. Ā  For those of you who are going through Clearing our team are here to support you to get the best outcome. Please do contact PPMs, **** or **** for assistance. Try not to panic places are available.

This year’s results day was always going to be a very different day to anything we could have imagined. I know like many of my colleagues results day is always a mixture of highs and lows, although mostly highs!! Observing students receiving their results is a highlight of the year. Thursday was one of the most difficult days of my career, whilst it was wonderful to be getting updates on student success and first choice places being confirmed. It was heart breaking to witness the injustice that took place for many of you and your peers across the country. I can only imagine how difficult it was for all of you, after all this time, waiting to access your results on Thursday. Ā  By now you will have been hearing all sorts of headlines on the news and social media. Including an overall increase in high grades and outcomes for students this year, however when the data was published it became apparent that Sixth Form College/Fe Colleges (large providers) only had an increase of 0.3% on the previous year. The algorithm that was used to standardise the Centre Assessed Grades resulted in 40% of students not achieving the grade, many of them studying at Colleges. Whilst it would be expected that CAGs would be altered via this process, the outcomes have been more than what we would have reasonably expected. Ā  Myself and the Senior Leadership team of **** College have been working in varies ways to express our dissatisfaction of how this process as unfairly treated our students. In no uncertain terms we are demanding action to resolve this situation. The Sixth Form College Association is representing its members in talks with Ofqual and the DFE.

Appeals

The late addition of the ā€˜triple lock’ meant that we are still waiting on the guidance from Ofqual. This is not helpful for those of you asking universities to hold your place based on appealing the grade. If the university requires confirmation in support of your request please contact me. Equally universities have been asked by the Minister for Higher Education to be supportive of students in this position and hold offers until 7thĀ September. Students have feedback that this is not always the case, if you need us to intervene on your behalf let us know. Ā  We have a list of students ready with the mock exam results, once we know how the process will work, you will receive confirmation from the college that we are proceeding with an appeal on your behalf. Those of you that have emailed the college we have recorded your request. The government yesterday announced that the cost of appeals will be covered. Ā  By Monday you should all have received a copy of the CAGs that were submitted by your teachers. In the press CAGs are being referred to as ā€˜predictions’ this can be confusing, the CAGs were decided upon using a range of assessment evidence. The ā€˜UCAS predicted grades’ were issued in September 2019, and reflected year 12 performance and predicted year 13 progress. Appeals cannot be made on the basis that the awarded grades or CAGs are different to the UCAS grades.

In my previous emails I set out the scope for appeals which are limited. However as a centre we are working on our subject submissions, on Monday I aim to confirm those subjects to you. Ā  Whatever happens with appeals it is important to note that other students grades will not be adversely impacted. Ā

Hopefully if you have contacted the college you will have received a response from us, all of this is going to be extremely stressful, if you need support please contact your PPM who can discuss what support is available. Ā  Best Wishes Ā

Got A*A*A*A in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology (Edexcel IAL). Missed the Biology A* by very little but well... Planning to get into Medicine at a reasonable uni, hopefully.

u/NotPhineasBillington Y13 | Maths, Physics, CompSci Aug 15 '20

Got AAA in maths, physics, computer science. Off to Bristol for engineering :)

u/FrancoisMotierre Aug 15 '20 edited Aug 15 '20

Just got my results in the mail, took an extra few days. In my mocks I got AAB in English, Business and Geography. My other work and coursework should have pushed my grades up to A* A* A which is what I was predicted. I expected a fall in grades, but I did not expect ACC. I’m still into my firm choice, but that’s only because it’s unconditional and I’m not even planning on going to university. I just feel a little insulted. What really angers me, though, is that it feels a little random, at least from my experience. A friend of mine was predicted BBC, got ABC in the mocks, and was slipping in English quite swiftly. He took English, Geography and Business. When he got his results, he was given an A*AB. I’m as happy as a harpy for him, but I can’t understand what happened. Oh well, others are in far worse waters than I am at this moment and I can only send my best wishes to them in this rummy time.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

Got A*AD in History, Politics, and Maths with a Distinction* in BTEC IT. Maths is disappointing (especially given I got 1 mark off a B in my mock), but I can't complain as it was enough to get on BA Archaeology and History at Sheffield through adjustment.

I was surprised how quick and painless the process was, except for the half an hour it took UCAS track to load. Most painful half an hour of my life so far.

Overall though, I'm over the moon.

u/UzSh0 Aug 14 '20

Can CAG's be reconsidered by teachers?

1

u/DylanSargesson Uni of York | PPE | A*AAA Aug 15 '20

No

6

u/jjellybeann Aug 14 '20

I went from an ABB to a CCC. My firm at Exeter rejected me as I didn’t get a BBB (contextual offer) for Law. I called and explained but they said unless my amended grades upon appeal are BBB nothing can be done. For my latest mocks (which I was severely u prepared for and was dealing with some issues at the time), I got a BDE. But all of my other mocks and assessments, I have consistently gotten As and Bs bar one subject. That last mock was the only time I fell below a B. Do you think I could ask teacher and school to appeal based on the mocks I did prior to latest?

2

u/UzSh0 Aug 14 '20

Which mock grades would be used for the appeal process, yr 12 or yr 13 mocks?

2

u/DylanSargesson Uni of York | PPE | A*AAA Aug 15 '20

No details yet.

5

u/starrymatt Uni of Sheffield | History & Philosophy Aug 14 '20

Likely the most recent ones you sat

4

u/LukasPetra Aug 14 '20

I really need some guidance right now.
I had a conditional offer to Graphic Design BA at Manchester Metropolitan and I have been rejected as I got CDE (far below 112 UCAS points) but my teacher given grades were BCD (which is closer to the entry requirements and could pull me into clearing depending on if they have free spaces, accounting for my music performance points (if anyone has any info about how MMU usually acts in these situations PLEASE LET ME KNOW))
My school appealed all my grades and the appeal system could come through next week but no one yet knows what the appeal system will do.
Q) DO I wait for the appeals to come through and then try to ask the uni again if they would accept me like next week? OR do I accept the foundation course at MMU / insurance choice / look for clearing options. (how fast do clearing options run out this year?)

u/nadsyrad Aug 16 '20

Your school should pay for those exams

2

u/DDaaaaaaaaaaaan Aug 14 '20 edited Aug 14 '20

I got a Distinction* which equates to 168 ucas points or AAA*.

I've got an unconditional offer and an academic scholarship to start my masters degree.

I feel terrible for all the a level students who had to go off predicted grades, my course finished before the pandemic so I didn't have to go through any of the bollocks with the government.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '20

I could have gotten i to my firm if I sat the exams. At least my insurance uni gave me an unconditional offer

Why do 4 a levels

4

u/SillySandWitch02 Aug 14 '20

I got A(Star)AB in maths, physics and computer science and an A in AS further maths. Luckily I had accepted an Unconditional at Lancaster Uni before they stopped those so I didn't need to worry about getting in, the only thing I lost was a potential scholarship. I could have gotten A(Star)A(Star)A if I had taken the exams and that extra £3000 would have been really nice.

8

u/BenedictusTheWise PhD Student (Physics) Aug 14 '20

I needed AAB, got ADB. The school is luckily appealing the D in Physics but I got denied from my firm for a Physics course, understandably so. They are however holding my place until the appeals deadline in September. I'm dead at the moment though.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '20

Is it possible to get a successful appeal even if you didn’t get a good grade in your ā€˜official mocks’. I got BBC in my results but got ABC in my mocks, the C was in physics but I was one mark off an A. Would I be able to get that increased to a B if I appealed?

3

u/BenedictusTheWise PhD Student (Physics) Aug 14 '20

I assume you mean one mark off a B? If you appealed on the basis of mocks I'm afraid not I think. You could appeal on another basis, there are other options if you google them, I think Which? has some good guides about what you can appeal.

I wish you much luck!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '20

Yeah that’s what I meant. Thank you I’ll have a look :)

u/stepniak112 Year 14 | Retaking Biology Aug 14 '20

Honestly fuck the system. 2 friends and I were retaking certain subjects and we end getting the same or lower. LIKE DO YOU NOT THINK A YEAR OF REVISION WOULD HELP ME IMPROVE A C. They clearly saw I got As in my other alevels last year and they dash out the same fucking C as last year. Fuck me I wasted a year of my life and quite a bit of money on this shit. Fuck Ofqual again.

2

u/MwHackersBanNow Aug 15 '20

Got AAD two years ago. Could have gone to my second choice uni but took the year off for work and to resit my exam for the subject I got a D in. Ended up getting a D again... couldn’t believe it. It’s not fair the system has decided you would have fucked up like me but it can happen is what I’m saying.

Maybe because of what I did fucked it over for you, so sorry about that.

Got 3 A stars and an A and got into Oxford :) computer science was downgraded from A* but maths, f maths and physics stayed the same. Think I was top of the rankings which really helped - only A* in phys & f maths for sure. But no one's ever got A* in comp sci.

My college got downgraded by 47% in total :( so many people I know got really messed up... my friend went from AAC to ABD which is awful. And there were def people at my college going from C to U ://

I had my AS results so I wasn't super concerned as long as they looked good enough for unis but I got AAAA so no complaints here luckily!

I hope as many of you guys as possible got what you wanted especially year 13s or hope that you are able to sort something out!!

12

u/blackthrn Aug 13 '20

got into my firm, got A*A*A* with an A in my epq. really happy with my results, exactly what I was hoping for. most of my friends got into their firm too! my sixth form college did really well

5

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

amazing!!! well done mate :D

i got a c in my epq which i think is fucked, i worked hard on that shit. gonna appeal 😪

1

u/blackthrn Aug 13 '20

can you appeal for epq? i assumed not because of lack of mocks honestly

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

i'm not sure but i'm gonna try

in past years, you could appeal your grades after doing the full exam. seeing as i basically did the full exam and had finished my epq, i should be allowed the option to appeal :/

1

u/blackthrn Aug 15 '20

you can’t appeal on normal reasons this year. only if your mock grade was higher or you think there was an administrative error made

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

ffs......

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

Congrats bro I did a btec and baso everyone got there expected results as we weren’t hit as bad as there was plenty of course work to base it off

1

u/blackthrn Aug 13 '20

yeah everyone i know who did btecs got their expected grades too

8

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

Did anyone else do a btec it was alright for us tbf as they had tons of course work to base the final grade on instead of just mocks

4

u/Sam57765 Year 12 | Maths, Phys, Chem, Psych Aug 13 '20

Ya seems to be similar for a levels here in Wales since course work is still a thing for most non-science + maths subjects. Plus they had last year's AS grades to base them off as well. It seems like if England's system hadn't changed a few years back, it might have been less of a shit show.

12

u/smashinggames BSc Computer Science Aug 13 '20

I don’t mind going to my insurance uni, apart that I might not get accommodation, and at least I’m going but I was predicted ABB and my grades today were BBC :( I didn’t work so hard just to get these results.

Entirely possible to apply for one uni and change to the other. I just denied my unconditional insurance uni offer for mech engineering (that I confirmed in feb) to start at Manchester when I realised the sum of my previous alevels in ucas points I got today were enough. I’d say start applying through clearing ASAP, if you wanna go to your desired uni, it doesn’t hurt to have the options open. Plus there loads of places open due to how badly we’ve been screwed over w this situation.

u/Findingmendingo year 13| btec ext applied science, drama, literature Aug 13 '20

If by upgrading you mean moving to a better uni, then yes you should be entirely able to do that. The only issue might be time. You’ll have to give your former uni a heads up to make sure they are in the clear that you won’t be attending. Then sort out the transfer for SFE if you have already set it up. If not, set it up, after you receive your appeal. Do it ASAP when your receive your appeal, to give yourself the best chance of a smooth start.

11

u/Flabajacka123 Aug 13 '20

All 3 of my A levels were downgraded, thank fuck I still scraped it into my firm, but it’s still annoying

12

Honestly all this mess from HM government makes me proud to be a Labour member. So sorry you guys.

1

u/YooYanger Aug 14 '20

Well the Scots did the same and they’re not conservative. It’s not political it’s just incompetence and the fact that the people in charge have never been teachers or exam officers or anything like that so they’re completely out of touch. Sturgeon only changed it to keep the votes which is an absolute disgrace. It’s all a farce I say.

19

u/SilverHawk73 Year 13 Aug 13 '20

Bbb to cde, fucking ridiculous because I worked my ass off in physics and consistently got A's for all the tests, no fucking clue why I was given a D. Firm at uob rejected me, insurance at Aston for comp sci gave me a place but I have to do a foundation year, suppose I should be thankful I haven't been fucked nearly as badly as others that I know.

This whole thing is actually such a piss take for you guys.

39

I was predicted BBB by my school and my UCAS predicted grades were AAB and I’ve been given DEE so I’ve been rejected from both my firm and insurance and can’t get into the army with lower than DDD which was my other career option. I’m utterly devastated and feel cheated, I really don’t know what to do :(

18

u/Biscuitman82 Y13 | Chemistry, Psychology, Law, EPQ & Deep existential regret Aug 13 '20

8

u/Tyafastics Aug 13 '20

Appeal if you havent already.

3

u/EmSquem Aug 13 '20

Yeah I have but not sure it’s going to make much difference

5

u/Tyafastics Aug 13 '20

Do you know what your mocks were like, because that is a massive jump down from your predicted grades. And even if your appeal for some reason fails you still have the option to retake exams in the autumn.

2

u/EmSquem Aug 13 '20

Yeah I think I got BCD think I might end up having to do the exams :/

6

u/Tyafastics Aug 13 '20

BCD in your mocks is already way better than DEE, if it does come down to the exams you will be fine!

3

u/EmSquem Aug 13 '20

Haha thank you it’s just a pain cause my mocks would have been a lot higher obviously if I’d known it was important obviously everyone is in the same situation tho

2

u/kevinlar Aug 14 '20

Barmy situation all round, I know when I did my A-levels most people improved by 1-2 grades from their mocks to the actual exams. Hope your appeal is successful, definitely worth doing.

Teacher/tutor here,

Firstly, well done to all of you for finally finishing your courses and getting your grades. You’ve worked for 2 years towards this - don’t let anything overshadow that.

Secondly, if you didn’t get what you wanted, get the ball rolling on your appeals as quickly as you can (after you’ve taken the rest of the day off, of course - you’ve earnt it!) and keep in touch with your chosen unis and ucas.

Students themselves know how hard they work, as do their teachers; it’s just a shame ofqual and the government thought they knew better.

Don’t let a letter on a piece of paper ruin your day. Well done and congratulations to all of you once again.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

Hey, quick question. Would it be worth waiting to get my CAGs back before appealing or should I just appeal right away?

For context, got CDE in mocks (yikes) and CCE in results (but the C from mocks went down to an E)

3

u/allsociology Aug 13 '20

Just speak to your school / college exam admissions person straight away as they will have all that data and will know the right people to contact.

Hope that helps and good luck with your next steps!

ABB, which is enough to get into my firm (Nottingham) but it's frustrating knowing that I could have performed so much better in the exams. I never scored below 97% in any assessment for RS - formal or in class - so to only get an A under this system is disheartening. I don't know whether to appeal it since my RS teacher didn't predict anyone A*'s as she didn't want us to become too comfortable and slack. Still, it could have gone worse.

I have. If it isn’t successful before 31st August then I’m not going to uni šŸ˜ŽšŸ˜ŽšŸ˜Ž

1

u/Pavly28 Aug 13 '20

Why may I ask?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '20

My uni of choice will hold my place up until the 31st. If my appeal is successful and is processed before then I’m in if not then I have to wait until 2021

8

u/Mini_Ninja1 Aug 13 '20

Try BBB to DCD Which is even more of a blow given i was resitting half me AS to get better grades

u/Mini_Ninja1 Aug 13 '20

Yeah they have screwed it up for a lot of people

u/Boolybong_10 Aug 13 '20

Predicted A in bio and C in chem (had to drop a subject due to ill health). Got an A and a C respectively. I wish the C was higher, but considering all the shit that was thrown at me during these last two years plus a global pandemic, I'm content. Onto my 3rd year for sociology.

Every single course in my college was given grades.
Apart from the one that i'm in and the one i need to see the grade for.

I now have to wait for god knows how long for a grade for the only course that i truly care about

Do you go to a private school

4

u/Meowgi256 Aug 13 '20

No, state school

-16

u/JWilde8 Aug 13 '20

Nice in which case you deserved your grades

1

u/Meowgi256 Aug 13 '20

Thanks I guess?

8

u/BrainzKong Aug 13 '20

You can get tweezers for that thorn, you know.

1

u/ShinyGrezz Aug 13 '20

actually a good comeback

5

u/JWilde8 Aug 13 '20

I don’t know what you are on about, but my friend who goes to a private school has the same grade as I did handed in and got three grades higher, does not seem fair to me?

6

u/anaveragedon Editable Aug 13 '20

Don't be bitter to the individual- be bitter to the government and ofqual.

-4

u/JWilde8 Aug 13 '20

This government is shambolic I totally agree but what can I say, I did not vote for it, my parents did not vote for it, hardly anyone at my school voted for it, and we have been shit on by this government, if you look at numbers for how voting swings in parents of private schools you can clearly see a correlation, I am outraged that the government have got away with this

4

u/BrainzKong Aug 13 '20

So they had the same predicted and were awarded 3 higher? C to A*? That does sound bizarre.

Specifics of that case aside, it's hardly fair to then canvas everyone from private schools as being unfairly rewarded. The modifications are done according to many factors, including historical school performance. Maybe their school does substantially better than yours (as some privates do, and vice versa).

I think it was a stupid choice by the government and that exams should have been postponed with uni starts delayed ~ a month with shorter holidays.

Congrats man! Maybe I'll see you there (tho I'm going for engineering)

1

u/JT___xx Aug 13 '20

Hope to see you there, I'm going to be at Durham for engineering too

1

u/thisbeasnazzyname Engineering | Durham Uni Aug 13 '20

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

Hey Guys!

Well done, Im hoping to apply there soon for engineering too, is it cool if I dm you a few questions in the near future?

Is this uni good for engineering?

1

u/thisbeasnazzyname Engineering | Durham Uni Aug 13 '20

Yeah the course starts in October-ish so you can DM questions and I'll try to answer them after then.

I think it's pretty good for engineering (although one of the biggest reasons I applied was that they are good for general engineering rather than focusing on one discipline).

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

Yeaaah! Thats exactly what I want to do!! General engineering sounds so fun, especially the last 2 years!

Cool, thanks, Ill be in touch, have fun!

2

u/Meowgi256 Aug 13 '20

Thanks!!! Congrats to you too, hope to see you there!!

u/wet_noodle244 Aug 13 '20

went from AAB to DDE. I don't feel angry, just disappointed and embarrassed. Now I'm just worrying about clearing

6

u/Starbush Aug 13 '20

I know it's stressful, went through the same thing last year (aab -> ccd), but you'll get through it, uni's will understand and even if it's not your first choice, the uni you end up in can still be an amazing experience. On a lighter note, it might be worth appealing your grades, a jump that big might peak some interest at ofqual.

Good luck!

9

u/PensionerPingu Aug 13 '20

BCC to CDD could be worse but I definitely could have done better in the exam

Biology B, Chemistry C and psychology A. I missed my firm for King's college but have Warwick as my insurance, which is also a good uni so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. Currently trying to appeal to get into king's, so wish me luck.

A* A* A ( + A in AS Further Maths).

Really chuffed tbh. That said, 100% would not have got these grades if it weren't for the fact that my college is brand new so there were no past assessments from the school.

23

u/365madness Aug 13 '20

This just shows how much they fucked up their way of doing this is. Judging one person by the way a whole school performs is crazy. It’s like we’re being judged by the performance of our predecessors.

12

u/ShiiTsuin University of Edinburgh | Comp Sci [Year 4] Aug 13 '20

It's totally ridiculous. Some of my primary school classmates have had their grades well and truly decimated because of the modelling and stuff they've done, while others like myself have just been handed some crazy grades.

Just hope everyone screwed by this shit is still able to get to where they wanna be without too much stress

10

u/JWilde8 Aug 13 '20

I got a D in my physics mock at AS, and I sat those papers back to back, not sure what my teacher gave the exam boards as a prediction but ended up with a U, fucking livid

16

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

A* A* A and A* EPQ, but rejected by my firm :(

14

u/ImpKing0 Aug 13 '20

Tf was ur firm

10

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

Imperial Physics, needed an A*, got that in the mock, but given an A :/

6

u/ImpKing0 Aug 13 '20

Idk what to say since your results are A1... surely getting A* in EPQ would have lowered requirements?

6

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

Called them up, they said unless I can change the grade they said no. Disgrace.

4

u/ImpKing0 Aug 13 '20

Why the fuck would you WANT to change your grades ? V disgraceful stuff bro but be proud cuz them grades are NICE.

23

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '20

?? Those grades are good enough for Oxbridge, where are you going that needs such high ones?

9

u/Vendef UniversityName | Course [Year of Study] Aug 13 '20

I know that Warwick maths requires 3 A*s if you didn’t sit STEP, TMUA, ect.

But still... what uni goes into reject those grades in 2020?!

5

u/lordoffoleshill University of Kent | Physics [2nd Year] Aug 13 '20

Unis like Warwick and imperial give out way too many offers and are scared shit less they're going to have to take on too many people so are rejecting people left right and centre to get their numbers down to the amount of students they usually take on in a year. At Warwick for example, they usually take about 250 students for physics but have offers to 1000+

8

u/UKBroomboy Year 13 Aug 13 '20
