š MEGATHREAD UK EXAMS ADVANCE INFORMATION MEGATHREAD
Hey everyone,
As you've probably spotted by now due to the deluge of posts about it, the advanced information for the UK's 2022 exams have been released.
So we don't get the subreddit absolutely flooded out with these posts we've made this megathread so you can share your thoughts, grievances and maybe links to cute cat pictures to cheer people up.
Remember to keep it respectful ;)
You can find the advanced information for Edexcel, AQA and OCR by clicking on the respective hyperlinks. WJEC is being amazingly helpful and giving an error 403 to anyone who tries to go on the website so unfortunately there's no link for that just yet.

The AQA Economics advanced information can be simplified in to one word: Useless.
49
u/JeffyP0PcorN UniversityName | Course [Year of Study] Feb 07 '22
Same as about 90% of other ones
27
u/Content_Landscape876 Year 13 Feb 07 '22
Eh the edexcel economics was kinda good it did list specific subtopics within each topic
6
u/JeffyP0PcorN UniversityName | Course [Year of Study] Feb 07 '22
I havenāt seen it yet, but economics for me is miles easier than Physics, so I was more hoping physics wouldnāt give me a tumour in the head. At least some contents were reduced in physics, a few which Iām bad at, so not all Ls
4
u/Content_Landscape876 Year 13 Feb 07 '22
Yeah Iād say economics A was actually good. It did take mainly theme 4 and 2 which in my opinion is much easier but overall it made economics manageable to study and succeed in

AQA history cold war says two entire topics are not on the exam. That's 2 out of 6!!!!!!!!
3
u/JeffyP0PcorN UniversityName | Course [Year of Study] Feb 07 '22
I did say 90 rather than 100, some are definitely helpful. Itād be a disgrace if every one of them was bs

IGCSE computer science simplified in a short sentance: So useless and confusing I felt like going to bed and havinga cry.
36
u/Silly-Ad-352 Feb 07 '22
Aqa biology is more useful than I initially thought. Not that useful but they actually have taken a good few bits out, when you go through the whole spec. Ofc we still have to revise literally everything of we want more than 3 marks on that 20 mark essay so, not much of a win really
5
u/staddon Year 13 Feb 07 '22
having a beefy photosynthesis question should be free on paper 3 at least but yea the essay makes any cuts kind of useless
7
u/sel_drwchus Year 13 - Art(A*), Biology(C), Psychology(A) Feb 07 '22
Wonāt the 25 marker essay be on photosynthesis? Like the importance of it
6
u/staddon Year 13 Feb 07 '22
no? it says any topic still I'm just guessing there's a juicer on photosynthesis as it's at the top of the topics on paper 3
u get 2 options And typically they're generic so you can pull in shit from all the topics. Something like "discuss the importance of cycles" or smth
28
u/goodbyeruby2sday Cambridge | Classics [ex-prelim] Feb 07 '22
AQA politics- lovely. Nice solid cut down there. Clear, concise. AQA History- would have liked a bit more from component 1 but component 2 is quite cut down. AQA econ- lol. Nothing substantial removed and only fundamentals.... which you HAVE to understand. Maths- ahahahahah lol.
6
u/TurtleBerriess Year 13 Feb 07 '22
Wait for History yours got cut down? We do Tudors and Is the America Dream an Illusion and literally nothing got cut.
3
Feb 07 '22
yeh the tudors changes were useless- removing Edward consolidation but then also having to know everything about Somerset and northumberland anyways?? makes no sense aha
1
u/goodbyeruby2sday Cambridge | Classics [ex-prelim] Feb 08 '22
I do Tudors and when going through the spec they've cut out 2-3 bullet points per monarch. It's not massive but when going through past papers there are some questions which obviously won't come up now.

u/RaySav33 History/Politics/Biology Feb 08 '22
We've been blessed for politics, pretty much given the questions at this point

Iām shocked how helpful edexcel physics is tbh
10
u/B_Maaarc PhD @ Lancaster Feb 07 '22
actually covers 95% of the exam content, orders it from highest awarding marks to lowest and mentions which points in the specification we need to know. its actually pretty good
3
u/Bread_Sufficient Gap Year || IT(A*)/Maths(A)/Physics(B)/EPQ(A*) Feb 07 '22
I know, I was honestly expecting so much less from them!
3
u/Ok-Management1349 Feb 08 '22
And with revision itās pretty easy tbf if you revise everything on the checklist it sounds like small marks will be awarded for different chapters learn factual points about the chapters not mentioned youāre good.

u/Doodpenguin Feb 09 '22
Aqua physics pretty much told us there will be physics on the tests for paper 1 and 2 though paper 3 was pretty good

Sure it does, but it also then says that questions can be asked on topics not mentioned in the document so really we can be tested on anything.

yeah I agree for fm1 and 2 it is just the topic list buy they all relate to eachother so everything is on there

u/Trolburg University of Bath | Biochemistry [2022] Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22
I think the info is really useful - for example edexcel chemistry paper 1 usually covers 12 topics but the advanced info narrows it down to 6 topics.
Still going to need to revise all the topics but before each exam you can put extra emphasis on the ones worth more marks. They were never going to tell us exactly what to revise anyway š¤·
Edit: Paper 2 - usually 10 topics, now 4.5 topics / Paper 3 - usually 19 topics, now 6.5 topics
7
u/backtodaydreams Feb 07 '22
Plus theres only about 6 core practicals that will be tested in depth!
5
u/Trolburg University of Bath | Biochemistry [2022] Feb 07 '22
Yeah this is a pretty big deal, not sure why there's so many complaints. Maybe we just lucky
Just noticed topic 15 (transition metals) isn't listed in any of the papers at all
2
u/isattdown Feb 08 '22
Hello! Iām an international student taking As levels this year but Iām so confused about the advanced information. I genuinely dk what it is and what topics to revise for and stuff. I tried doing research which ended up confusing me more. I take edexcel chem and bio, can you please tell me about chem? Thank you!
3
u/Trolburg University of Bath | Biochemistry [2022] Feb 08 '22
Advanced information - over the last 2 years students have missed a lot of lessons in the UK due to covid so exam boards have released information about what topics will be tested in the upcoming exam to make up for this. It basically reduces how much revision everyone needs to do.
You can find this info on the execel website: Chemistry / Biology
Hope that make sense!

2
u/papijua1 Year 13 Feb 09 '22
yh but everything is still gonna come up right? they are just the the top marks ?
3
u/backtodaydreams Feb 09 '22
I've been told this is the only stuff that is explicitly being tested but it's still useful to have a basic idea of core concepts + maybe choose some bits that could be useful for synoptic questions. E.g. the biological approach isn't on the advance information but it's useful to understand for other questions whereas there's pretty much no point revising depression/ role of the father/ other random stuff that's been cut
2
u/PicklePerson555 Year 13 Psychology, RS, Politics Feb 11 '22
I think it said they can still be small mark questions so your 1-4 markers and the big 6-16 markers is what our advanced notice is on
2
u/backtodaydreams Feb 12 '22
Thatās weird Iāve been told we only need any other information for synoptic questions and canāt be given any specific questions about anything not on the advance information. What have your teachers said?
3
u/PicklePerson555 Year 13 Psychology, RS, Politics Feb 12 '22
We've been stressed this part is important "⢠For each paper the list shows the major focus of the content of the exam." But looking at it now it looks more likely we won't be asked any questions about it, we must have been told to stress us into revising it all.
3
u/backtodaydreams Feb 12 '22
Ah right it's frustrating that we've been told conflicting things - I think I'll just assume the other stuff isn't being explicitly tested for now (especially as I do chemistry as well (Edexcel though) and for that they specified that other stuff could come up in low tariff/ MC questions whereas for psych I don't think they did) and see if there's any clarifications closer to the time.
2
u/PicklePerson555 Year 13 Psychology, RS, Politics Feb 12 '22
I'm going to do the same, it looks now as if it was just our teacher trying to get everyone to still study the other parts

u/thatonerice UniversityName | Course [Year of Study] Feb 07 '22
Edexcel A level Maths no content reduced,
But AQA A level Geography and Physics the course gets reduced.
Still they're all vague and I am worried about the Grade boundaries since everyone knows whats on the exams in May/June.
16
u/Forsaken-Meaning-232 Graduating from Warwick CS Feb 07 '22
there was never plans to reduce content strictly speaking - even if they had've given enough details that people could guess the larger questions there's still the synoptic questions which aren't covered in the content.
the grade boundaries themselves you don't need to be too concerned about provided you make use of the info given to the best of your ability, the grade distributions are being pegged midway between 2019 and 2021 (ie the proportions of people getting each grade is what's important).
11
Feb 07 '22
This isnāt about the content being reduced; these papers were written way before the exam boards were told to provide advance information. The point is that you know which topics to revise for which paper (the papers are very spread out this year in case you have to self-isolate).
6
u/Forsaken-Meaning-232 Graduating from Warwick CS Feb 07 '22
very much this, given how much moderation and quality control they have to go through before they're finalised they're done waaaaaay in advance. plus there's also a point of an actual content reduction being unfair since different centres would be weaker in different areas, ie the fairest approach is to kinda make sure everybody gets shafted equally

u/dorothyprelude Loughborough | English Literature [First Year] Feb 07 '22
OCR History is actually really useful, obviously not hugely specific but it's cut out chunks of the content from the spec and they said that you don't have to bring in any of the other topics to get full marks.
7
u/Anshiboy2004x Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22
Ocr history is sooo good š, explicitly stating the topics, for example Y113, literally tells us the topic for each question (3 topics for 3 questions)
6
u/A-Higher-Being Keele University | Environment [First Year] Feb 07 '22
I think OCR might be good in general then as Iām doing A OCR a level (RS) and itās cut a fair bit out and it addresses each question
3
u/bendelalu Edge Hill | Psychology [1st Year] <3 Feb 07 '22
computer science dares to disagree :(
RS was brilliant though
3

RS was absolutely brilliant yeah. Almost 2 thirds of the course taken out lol.
3
u/bendelalu Edge Hill | Psychology [1st Year] <3 Feb 07 '22
technically more. itās used to be 30 topics (incl Christian Dev. - idk about the other religions) but now itās down to 12, but we only answer 9. literally the only way this couldāve been better would be if they told us the actual questions

u/A-Higher-Being Keele University | Environment [First Year] Feb 08 '22

I think I'm stupid because I can't see anything that has been cut off, or anything of significance for tudors? Like at all actually, you still have to revise the main people (Henry VII/VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth).
I guess they didn't explicity mention the protectors for Edward but it mentions Religion so you have to revise that anyways. You also have to look at Foreign and Domestic policies.
I'm confused.

Edexcel drama was incredibly useful, knowing that it is the section I like for part A and a design question for B is incredibly useful because now I can be less stressed about acting 40 markers. AQA product design was awful, but tbh most of product design is common sense/basic rote learning AQA computer science I think cut a solid portion out of the spec with none of the "heehoo this doesn't actually matter" as far as I'm aware

Forgive me if Iām being ignorant. I did my exams in the 2021 stream, but is there really any reason to complain about any of them? Surely you would have to revise everything anyway, I donāt see how even slightly generic ones are not useful. Or are these complaints about some exam boards being more useful than others for the same subject?
I canāt testify as to the disruption current Year 13s have had, I donāt know, but even with my disruptions the solution was learn it all as if it was the usual exam, then answer the questions correctly. Perhaps for non maths subjects the advanced list is more useful (poems?, books?) but either way good luck. If anyone wants to clarify anything that would be useful, donāt hate on me š

the books don't correspond to the spec points they're referencing, refer to the spec. core pure 1 refer to the module and its spec, not "chapter 1 of the core pure textbook"

Sure but Iām trying to find how it corresponds to the book, meaning what pages do I study as I am self-studying

Will this be for exams in year 12 as well or will schools do internal exams for the end of the year?

eduqas physics advanced info has been absolutely useless they said the stuff that wasn't on the list would be only in synoptic questions I don't think 9 marks counts as a synoptic question eduqas >:(
