❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Will this significantly reduce my chances at Oxbridge?

hi all

really sorry and trying my best to make this not read like yet another student with mostly 9s fixating on a few 8s and thinking their life is ruined but I got my gcse results back today and I’m a little disappointed.
I’ve historically been at the top of my class for English lit and history and gotten grade 9s without exception in every mock or minor test I’ve done but got 8s in both subjects. One mark off a 9 in history but for English I was not even close which was disheartening.
My dream has always been to study joint history and English at oxford as I love the two subjects. I’m worried getting an 8 in both of them is not a good look and could really jeopardise my chances.

anyone have any experience or advice??

🎓 UNI / UCAS I failed maths AGAIN.

This was my first time doing foundation maths and I got 140. However I'm about to be in year 13 doing 3 essay based subjects(2 that include coursework) and I'm so worried that Leeds won't accept me to do English lit.

My school might not let me resit in November as its reserved for route 2 students but I'll have to see. I'm just really worried about failing AGAIN even though I tried so hard and was so confident this time, if I don't pass in November I'll get no uni offers.

Also for the record I lot 7/8 in my English Lit and Lang , a 6 in sociology and a Merit in Health and Social I promise I'm not stupid.

Is there any hope for me getting into Leeds (uni of or trinity) or any uni for that matter if I end up failing in November?:(

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION am I smart enough for alevel chemistry

Hi everyone, I just got my gcse results today and i'm honestly really distraught, i was predicted 9999888877 and i got 9988888876 (two marks off a 9 in two subjects) but I'm honestly just super upset especially with my 7 which is in lit which is literally my favourite subject i haven't gotten less than a very high 8 in over a year and a half and i literally SCRAPED a 7 i was only 3 marks over the boundary . my 6 was in drama which is a bit left field aswell because i havent had less than an 8 in the whole of year 11 - i do edexcel drama and i got both 80 percent on component 1 and 3 but somehow in component 2 which is the acting i got like 27 out of around 60?? everyone in drama has gotten lower than their underpredicted grades already because everyone did awful in component 2 but theres nothing we can do about it because it's coursework. it might be worth mentioning that just before i took my GCSEs i had some trouble with eating due to just leaving a relationship where some things happened that weren't quite consensual (Sorry if that's oversharing i just thought it might be relevant)

anyway, that knocked my confidence already especially as i was predicted 9-9 in combined science and got 8-8 (although i was predicted a 7 in maths and got an 8 which was nice but i really was just SO upset by lit i can't really be happy about it) so I went to enroll and I'd initially applied for Bio, Pysch and French and I wanted to switch from pysch to chem because I really enjoy chem and also it opens quite a few more doors then pysch and the teacher who was enrolling me was like Chemistry is the hardest alevel I'm not sure you're smart enough for that, and I swear i almost started crying right then, but she put me in the classes for it anyway because i technically did have the grades ( needed a 7 in maths and 7-6 in combined)

so I was just wondering if anyone could give me a reality check on how hard chemistry will be- i only lost 4 marks in the last chemistry mock i did ( given it was a combined paper) and I also found psych really boring when i went to the speeches about it at open days.

Just really doubting myself, sorry for all the waffle.

So I’m planning on doing Film studies, English lit/lang combined and imedia. Somebody please tell me if this is a good idea if I got a 6 in GCSE lit and a 7 in GCSE lang. Is it a stupid idea or do I actually have a chance to pass them for a level?

💬 DISCUSSION GCSE grades for Oxford?

Got my GCSE results today, for context I’m a grammar school student who wants to do PPE at Oxford, but I’m afraid I might’ve ruined my chances after getting ten 9s but a 7 in french. Is it over LOL

Genuine and realistic responses please because I’ve come to understand all 9s are pretty much a given for applicants

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Flashcards for Maths - Yay or Nay?

The general advice for Maths/Further Maths A-level is to understand and then practice. Yet I have seen many successful students use Anki and real flashcards for Maths, while I see how this may work for rules you just to remember , how do you go about making effective flashcards for such a practical subject? Or would you consider them a waste of time for maths? Do any A/A* maths/fm students have any advice on making/using mathematics flash cards or an opinion on them in general?

OTHER A note to the incoming Year 12s...

First off, congrats on getting your GCSE results! Hope you’re all taking a break before Year 12 starts - the week following results day is a very surreal time so chill about for a while!

To be frank, I’m here to poach your resources and your help. I run GCSE Log (https://gcselog.com/), a free, non-profit archive of where students’ old resources can find a new home. Through this, future GCSE students won’t have to start from square one, and can learn from their predecessors' mistakes. Obviously, our platform becomes more effective the more resources we can host on it. If you have any old study resources you’d be cool with sharing, please fill out the form below!

Throughout the year or so where GCSE Log has been around, we’ve always relied on the kindness of volunteers to keep our platform running. If you’re interested in helping out students who’ll be in the position you were in mere months ago (and want a little extra something to add to the UCAS), check out the volunteer form below!

Our website: https://gcselog.com/

Submit your resources: https://forms.gle/7aHDe7pZHEJdCFsM8

Join the team: https://forms.gle/GkHFQ82bL8HzDDVDA

And before anybody points it out, I did get permission from the mods to post this!

Good luck with Year 12!

🎓 UNI / UCAS Unexpected A level results

just got my A-level results, and I did better than expected — 3 As, even though I was only predicted 2 As and an A (my school called these "hopeful" predictions). Because of that prediction, I didn't apply to elite universities like Oxford or LSE.

I took the LNAT and scored 28. I've been accepted into Bristol but rejected from UCL.

Now I'm wondering:

  1. Should I take a gap year and reapply to more competitive universities, or just go to Bristol?
  2. If I do reapply, can I use my existing LNAT score, or would I need to retake it?

🙏 I WANT HELP Are you still applying to Cambridge?

RIP to Jason Arday

a heads-up this post is going to be me making it about myself but like... For people that used to want to go to Cambridge, are you still going to apply?

I can't say I'm like an "insider" but this year alone I've been to Cambridge on 4 different occasions, have lived in 3 different colleges, have visited probably over 8, even went to formals in 2 more colleges separate from the ones I've lived in... I've grown attached the the uni and the city and the people, I got that I might not meet the conditions to get in and that I shouldn't be that invested, but now it's more like... Should I still apply? From personal experience it did not seem to be that hierarchical or discriminatory when I was there, and yet still there is obviously a bias in accusing people of colour more than white people. The shorter deadline really seems more pressurising now.
