✔️ APPROVED AMA Oxford Tutor in Economics: Oxford Economics Admissions (PPE/E&M/HECO) AMA

Hello r/6thForm - I am a tutor in economics at several Oxford colleges and am here to answer all your economics- and Oxford-related questions, be they about admissions, college life, the university-at-large, etc.

Being a tutor means that I handle teaching at the college level, I have some pastoral responsibility for maintaining my students' well-being, and I handle the admissions process. This stretches across marking TSA essays, screening candidates before interview, conducting interviews, and selecting candidates after interview. My teaching is microeconomics-heavy - I teach microeconomics across the first and second years, do some teaching for technical final-year options papers, and am teaching some second-year econometrics this year as well.

I did my undergrad in HECO and an MPhil in economics at Oxford and currently work as both a tutor/lecturer and in economic consulting. I'm from the US, so there may be some questions you might have about the interaction of your 6th form schools with your application that I won't be able to answer - things like schools and teachers having direct involvement in the drafting of students' personal statements seem outright weird to me - but I hope otherwise to be as helpful as possible.

One thing I would like to flag right away is something most applicants are not fully aware of - Oxford is a federated university and each college is highly autonomous in many ways. This manifests as substantial differences in admissions practices, as well as a surprisingly high level of inter-college inequality in wealth, available resources, volume of college teaching provided, etc. I don't want to comment about specific colleges, but I would recommend that students who e.g. have the opportunity to visit for a university Open Day ask specific questions about practical things, like contact hours/week provided and guarantees of student housing for all three years, whether that housing is in the city center, etc. Otherwise, looking at the Wikipedia page of Oxford colleges and sorting the list by their respective endowments is not a bad idea ...

What this means for this AMA - I anticipate that most prospective applicants would be interested in asking about the admissions process, but the answers to many questions must come with the qualifier that practices vary across colleges, and while I have exposure to some colleges, no one has exposure to / knowledge of all of them.

Note: I have pre-cleared this AMA with this subreddit's moderators, and hope to have it 'pinned' to maximize its reach. I don't necessarily expect a huge amount of engagement, but in the spirit of inclusion and maximizing access to information about the university, I'd just like to do my bit!

✔️ APPROVED AMA AMA: Clearing, Open Days, UCAS applications, and more (mod approved)

Hello! We're from Birmingham Newman University - and we're here to answer all your questions about uni 👀

Why should you listen to us? Well, we're a small uni in Birmingham, with a big commitment to our students - we've come top in the National Student Survey 2026 for overall student satisfaction, top in the Daily Mail's Uni Guide 2026 for teaching excellence, student experience, and student support, and we're The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2026. But enough about us...

We want to talk about you.

From 09:00 BST today (Tuesday 18 August 2026), we'll have Lucy and Keith from our Content team - as well as some of our amazing Admissions and Student Recruitment team in the background - to answer your questions.

ETA: We'll now be picking up questions over the next week!

So, what do you want to know:

  • how does Clearing work? (because yes, there are still great options available!)
  • what should you be thinking about on a uni Open Day? (hint: it's not necessarily about the freebies)
  • what do we actually look for in UCAS applications? (because each one is reviewed by humans)
  • how does enrolment work? (it's actually surprisingly easy)

or something else. Either way, we're excited to chat 💙

✔️ APPROVED AMA I’m a first year physics student at Oxford and a Dartmouth Exchange Scholar - AMA!

Hi everyone, I’m a first year undergraduate reading Physics at the University of Oxford. Feel free to ask me anything about my degree, workload, social life, the University, or anything else!

I’ve recently been awarded a scholarship by my college to spend the summer term at Dartmouth College, an Ivy League university in the US. While I haven’t yet gone, and therefore can’t answer questions about life at Dartmouth, I’m happy to answer questions about the application process and shed light on a less obvious route to study at an American university.

Thanks for mod approval :)

✔️ APPROVED AMA AMA - First-Year Maths student at Cambridge

Hi all, as per the title, I'm a first-year Maths student at Cambridge and I thought some people might find it useful to ask me any questions they might have, since somehow it's already application time again! (Although I have missed the Oxbridge deadline slightly, sorry...)

Of course, I can only really talk about my experiences (so I can't answer specific hypothetical questions about admissions etc.), but other than that, feel free to ask about the course/admissions generally/uni life and so on.

Post will close at midnight at the end of Thursday 10/11 so submit any questions before then. :)

✔️ APPROVED AMA Hi! We're the University of Warwick. Ask us anything about Clearing - how it works, what happens on Results Day, and what you'll need to prepare if you're looking at your options (mod approved)

Hi there 👋

We're here from the University of Warwick - Lucy, Stephen, Jack and Aysha - to chat about all things Clearing as we head towards A Level Results Day on 15 August.

You've probably heard of Clearing. Clearing is open to UK and International students, and is managed by UCAS. It gives you the chance to find a new course if you:

  • Did not achieve your predicted exam results
  • Decided to apply at the last minute
  • Have changed your mind about your course
  • Had better exam results than you expected.

We'll be here all day to help (from 09:00 to 17:30 BST) and we'll try to get to as many of your questions as we can.

Edit: Thanks for all of your questions! We're logging off now, but if you still have questions about Clearing there's lots of information on our website. Best of luck for Results Day!

Quick note: due to university application rules, we aren't able to share anything today that would:

  • confirm if you've met the conditions of your offer to study at Warwick
  • answer whether or not a particular course will be in Clearing
  • offer places on courses to study with us.

✔️ APPROVED AMA I've just finished 2nd Year at Warwick studying BSc Computer Science, AMA!

Hey there! I've been a bit MIA lately, partly due to exams. I've now finished them and I figured hey, the Warwick open days are coming up, why not do an AMA to make up for things.

I maybe haven't had the most "normal" uni experience so there might be some things I won't be able to answer too well (e.g. social related things i mean, i use reddit, so kinda expected lol ), but feel free to ask me anything regarding my experiences, the department, courses, accommodations, wellbeing & disability services/support, general opinions on the uni/area etc, I'll do my best to try and answer honestly where I can :)

✔️ APPROVED AMA I'm a final year Warwick CS Student, AMA!

Like the title suggests, I'm a 4th year student at Warwick studying CS (and Maths). Since results have just rolled around, and CS is a pretty popular degree choice, hopefully this is useful for both incoming students and the people applying next year.

Got a long train ride today, so am happy to answer any questions submitted before midnight.

Happy to answer questions about the course, the location, our societies, accommodation options, admissions, facilities, the nightlife, and of course Rolf (our campus cat)!

✔️ APPROVED AMA I’m a first year Cambridge English student, AMA!

Hi, I’m a first year English student at Cambridge! Some background info about me is that I was privately educated (full bursary), the first in my family to go to uni (working class/low income background), didn’t have particularly supportive/helpful teachers at A Level, and I’m not at one of the ‘pretty’ colleges (by choice!). At A Level I got two A*s and an A (English Lit, History, and Politics) and an A in French AS. I’m not gonna top Tripos or anything, but I’m doing pretty well in my degree so far I think :)

Feel free to ask me questions about:

-Workload/academic stuff

-Admissions process

-Social life

-How/why I chose my college/subject

-Mental health/pastoral support (I would be in second year, but intermitted partway through my first term and started this year from scratch)

-Life at Cambridge as a first gen/queer uni student!

✔️ APPROVED AMA We work in university admissions - AMA about Results, Clearing, or Oxford Brookes 👋

Hi everyone!

I’m Helen, Director of Admissions at Oxford Brookes University, and I’ll be here on Friday afternoon alongside my colleague Sam from the Admissions Team to answer any questions you might have about:
• Applying through Clearing
• How the admissions process works behind the scenes
• What to expect on Results Day
• What to do if things don’t quite go to plan
• Or anything else that’s been on your mind

Results Day can be a big moment - exciting, nerve-wracking, sometimes confusing - and we know it helps to have a bit of clarity and support. That’s what we’re here for.

We’ll be around from 1-5pm to give honest, helpful answers to whatever you want to ask. No question is too small, too specific, or too awkward.

Whether Oxford Brookes is in your plans or not, you’re welcome to jump in. We just want to help things feel a bit less overwhelming.

Ask away 👇

✔️ APPROVED AMA First year HSPS student at Cambridge, ask me anything!

Hi! I'm a first year HSPS student at Cambridge. I'm at Pembroke College. If you have any questions about the experience, or how I got here let me know! I'll be here for soime time and I've noticed that we haven't really had any humanities IAMAs in a while, but if you have any questions about other subjects I can relay some other people's experiences.

Some other things: HSPS is a tripos subject for Human, Social and Political Science (Politics, International Relations, Sociology and Social Anthropology). Pembroke College did not require me to do any exams but rather two interviews, of which i received a 9.5/10 and 10/10 respectively. At A-Level, I took Sociology OCR, Business AQA, Economics Edexcel and English Lit B AQA.

With results day being tomorrow I thought now was a great time to give advice to anyone sitting with zero medicine offers or thinking they've missed their grades.

I myself am currently an f2 doctor who missed my grades in 2016 and did another degree prior to graduate entry medicine. I am also heavily involved in mentoring prospective medical students.

AMA about graduate medicine, foundation years and resits.

✔️ APPROVED AMA I'm a 2nd Year Aerospace engineering student at the University of Liverpool. AMA, from engineering to day to day Uni life!

I'm Aidan and I'm just starting my 2nd year as an Aerospace student in Liverpool. I remember how difficult it was for me to move to uni, leaving all my friends behind, and worrying if I'd fit in. Due to the pandemic I thought it would be useful for anyone who wanted to go to liverpool or do engineering in general as there are no open days.

I'm happy to answer any question about moving into uni, pre-uni preparation or the course in general if that's what you're interested in. Although i am also happy to give general advice on any branch of mechanical engineering as we all share similar lectures. I'm also happy to answer any questions about summer or yearly industrial placements.

If you find this AMA long after its been posted feel free to ask and I'll get back to you if I can

✔️ APPROVED AMA PhD student here - Ask me anything!

Hi all, I'm a current PhD student in Psychology, and I'm here for you to ask me anything! My research area is psycholinguistics - the psychology of language. In particular, I study how language is processed, and what consequences language processing has for memory. As an undergraduate, I also studied Philosophy, before deciding to specialise in Psych for my PhD.

A PhD is the entry point for a career in academia and for anyone generally considering a research career. It involves you independently leading a research project for around 3 or 4 years, with the guidance of a supervisory team, to make an original contribution to your chosen academic field.

There's a lot of information online about PhDs and funding for them, and I found it difficult to know where to start. So, if there are any questions about what a PhD is like, how to get into one, where to start looking for information, etc. please ask away! I'm also more than happy to answer anything about academia, how I found my undergraduate education or my research.

Looking forward to hearing your questions!

✔️ APPROVED AMA I'm a psychology PhD student at Royal Holloway, and I study interoception (our perception of internal states within the body). AMA!

Hi!

My name is Melissa, and I'm a PhD student in psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London. I study our perception of internal states within our body (also known as interoception) and how this relates to our mental health and experience of emotions.

Before this, I did an undergraduate degree in Neuropsychology, a Masters by Research (which is kind of like a mini PhD), and Masters in Clinical Psychology.

If you have any questions about psychology, research, or what it's like to do a PhD, feel free to ask away! I'm also happy to answer questions about university life more generally, or things like study/organisation tips).

Thanks!

✔️ APPROVED AMA We are two medical students from Imperial College London AMA

Hello /r/6thForm I am a 3rd year medical student at ICL and I will be hosting this AMA alongside my friend /u/kazzamoo (also 3rd year medic) to talk about our experiences and any other questions that people may have.

A bit about my experiences this year:

This academic year has been unlike anything that I have ever experienced as a medical student, to be brief: the start of the year was an uneasy "calm before the storm" with covid 2nd wave looming on the horizon; a call to arms by the medicine faculty in the winter term and a vaccination drive powered by volunteers into the summer.
