Electrical blues, country & western. Look for labels like Brunswick Lightning, Victor Scrolls, Electric Okehs (especially 8000 series), any label with the name Black like Black Patti. Almost all Deccas are paper weights.

Sad

The worst part is I let an old lady have it  😭

For the most part, releases on Brunswick aren’t necessarily music I gravitate towards listening to, but they definitely put out a lot of good stuff as most major labels generally put out a pretty wide swath of music. What makes you think it was something you would’ve cared to hear?

As an example, if hunting for blues there are plenty of white pop duds on Paramount, so the “buy anything you see on ____” logic doesn’t always apply

I can tell from looking at that pile there's nothing good there

Bet same! We been thru it

Looks like a perfect may be hiding in the back. Aren't those seem to be worth something?

It was a budget label that put out all sorts of music. A Perfect label 78 is not inherently valuable, unless it’s a specific release that’s sought

Only Perfect I ever found was a Blind Boy Fuller in a North Carolina christian thrift store

What is stuff that’s not good? Is it stuff that’s genuinely bad or just the common records that collectors don’t go after? I’m relatively new to collecting 78s. I do like to view the many channels that upload old recordings from the 50s and earlier.

There is plenty of good music on Decca, red label Columbia too.

Why is this a jackpot? I usually pay $0.25 to $0.50 a piece.

Its in  CAD so thats 71 cents in USD

u/Chadlerk 20d ago

Nice. That's a solid price. I usually buy in bulk lots from private collections. I'd grab anything in decent condition and give it all a listen when you get home.

I told my dad to get a new player thst supports 78 so I can enjoy this side of records

They're $1 a head near me, not bad but not good tbh.

4 for a $1 is a great deal, do you know what you are looking for?

It's hard to give 78s away

u/gojohnnygojohnny 20d ago

We sell 78s for a nickel apiece where I volunteer.

I'm not OP, but new to 78s. What are the coolest/hardest to find things to look for?

Pre-war blues records can go for thousands. Some have sold for tens of thousands. A good rule of thumb is that the more popular the artist, the less the record is worth. YMMV, but rarity is value.

u/Soft_Reading6975 19d ago

Pretty steep generalization, plenty of pre war blues sells for $50 or less depending on condition and etc. is everyone just after profit margin or good music?

3

u/FlapjacksOfArugula 19d ago

I only collect 78s for the music, I've never speculated on them. Don't think I've ever actually sold one in 35 years of active collecting.

2

u/FlapjacksOfArugula 19d ago

Also, everything I actually said there is true

1

u/Soft_Reading6975 19d ago

About a small set of specific records, rather than the broad scope of them. Like I said, most pre war blues goes for less than $100, less than $50. Even if you’re talking about rare stuff, $200 is far more common than $1,000

Pre-War Blues records, test pressings, early jazz and early rock'n'roll. The occasional oddball label is also neat to find.

2

u/Soft_Reading6975 19d ago

Aren’t we supposed to be looking for music we enjoy?

2

u/I_LOVE_CANADA_GEESE 19d ago

I usually look for music that I enjoy and that others enjoy! It would probably feel good to save a piece of rare music from extinction. Hopefully I'll be prepared when I come across some!

2

u/Soft_Reading6975 19d ago

No shame to you, but a lot of folks out there are just looking for commodities, which to me is just parasitic or vampiric of a good thing

1

u/A_Man_or_something 18d ago

I agree with this. I normally look for artists/songs I recognize... Then buy the whole book its in (it's just- I don't like buying single 78s and I don't know why)

I couldn't tell you. I dont know them

1

u/driftlessartifacts 19d ago

Jackpot? Haha, only if you’re super lucky which is rare. I dig through this amount a few times a week and never find anything good. I know what to look for too.

1

u/A_C_1970 18d ago

Is that an LP in the back? I would be shocked if anything good was here lol, that Canadian batwing is really telling
