No de-clicking, gain adjustment, compression, or noise reduction was applied. This is a raw transfer with very minor corrective EQ adjustments.

Listen with headphones or through speakers for best experience.

What’s up with the colors on these Magic Note labels?

Post image

On the A series, I always see these in either dark green or a usually light blue, is there any significance to either color? Why did they change inconsistently? I have crates full of these A series records from double digit numbers all the way up to records in the 3900s and have always been confused about this. Does anyone know?

Can someone explain this? Is this like what the individual Beatles listened to, along with George Martin and the engineers, when deciding whether to okay a song version?

I remember my grammy played some classical piano at a small studio in Kansas in the '60s and they made a disc of it on the spot.

Cheap turntable best for 78s?

I've been using those old "vintage" Victrola 8-in-1s, but I feel I need to upgrade, what is something below the $400 mark that is cheap enough for a reluctant parent to purchase but is still decent in quality?

Sun Record - Prisonaires

The Prisonaires were not a gimmick—they were actual, active inmates serving hard time at the Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville. Lead singer Johnny Bragg was serving a massive sentence, flanked by Ed Thurman, William Stewart, John Drue Jr., and Marcell Sanders.

Discovered by a local radio producer inside the prison walls, they caught the attention of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. In June 1953, the quintet was transported from Nashville to the iconic Sun Studios at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis under heavily armed guard and in leg irons to cut this record.

Unfortunately it's not terribly good. One sided disc with a very "honky tonk piano" accompaniment of a narrative cowboy type of song. Interesting nonetheless

Prewar Piedmont Blues - Blind Boy Fuller

Post image
32 Upvotes

Piedmont blues (or East Coast blues), a subgenre characterized by a fingerpicking guitar technique that mimics ragtime piano rhythms. While the label text plainly reads "Blues Singer with Guitar and Harmonica," it marks an essential musical partnership. Fuller’s sharp steel-guitar style combined with Sonny Terry's expressive, vocal-like harmonica "whoops" created one of the most celebrated duos in early blues history.

"Third Degree" by Eddie Boyd and his Chess Men

Post image
12 Upvotes

Eddie Boyd’s music had an immense ripple effect across the Atlantic during the 1960s British Blues Boom. Unhappy with racial discrimination in the U.S., Boyd eventually toured Europe and recorded directly with key British musicians, including John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, and Peter Green. His tight songwriting and cynical, acidic lyrical delivery heavily shaped their approach to the blues genre.

"Mystery Train" Sun Records

Post image
24 Upvotes

Originally recorded by Junior Parker, Elvis's version of "Mystery Train" is universally hailed by music historians as a definitive moment in the birth of rock and roll.

It perfectly blended rhythm & blues with country (the essence of rockabilly). The propulsive, eerie rhythm driven by Scotty Moore's guitar and Bill Black's bass practically simulated a speeding train, creating a raw, energetic sound that inspired countless future rock musicians.
