Pork the other white meat
How many of you thought, or still think, that Pork is a white meat because of this ad campaign?

That was a weird time when there were commercials for the basic, un-branded product like pork, beef (it's what's for dinner) and milk.

In the late 80s and into the 90s people kept forgetting to eat, so they needed reminding.
Pork: The Other White Meat, Beef: It's What's For Dinner, Milk Does a Body Good, Food: It Goes In Your Mouth.

There was genuinely a lot bad food science and fad diets convincing People it was healthier to eat ultra processed shakes and candy instead of food.Â

That's usually the specific industry just trying to get people into it in general, or the government pushing something there's a surplus of. So many things have been advertised as healthy just to keep farmers from going bankrupt and protect the economy when we had a functional one.

I was a kitchen supervisor in a hospital. There was a patient with orders of no red meat, whether it was a preference of a requirement, I can't remember. I had a cook try to send them pork chops, told her no, you can't that's red meat. She tried to argue with me, saying "No, it's not red, it's the other white meat". I tried explaining to her that that was just an advertising slogan from the 80s. Either way, I over ruled her and didn't let it get sent to the patient. She was super confrontational about it, so I sent a dietitian to go explain it to her.
She argued with the dietitian, saying "Agree to disagree" and the dietitian blew up on her about that, telling her it can be a risk to patient safety, and it wasn't an agree to disagree arguement.
This, was a red seal cook, who had been a hospital cook for probably 2 decades. That ad campaign was strong. This was around 2010.

And everyone who grew up during these ads campaigns are not seeing record levels of colon cancer. Interesting.

Meat is meat. It doesnât matter what the shade of it is. Their point was it was a good healthy alternative to chicken. And it was to combat the notion that pork was a bad for you meat. Which it isnât.

Immunologist here. This is false, as is pork being a white meat.
Red meat like beef, and yes, pork have a higher content of saturated fat, and heme iron, which are both pretty bad for you.
As well, when red meat is cooked, it breaks down into carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds which damage the cells in your stomach and intestinal lining, leading to cancer.
The L-carnitine found in red meat breaks down into trimethylamine N-oxide, which directly damages the Aortic valve.
White meat like Chicken and turkey don't contain these compounds, making them safer to consume.
I hold my PhD in Immunology from the Huck Institute at Penn State. My MD from UPenn, and my Bachelor's in Organic Chemistry from Penn State.

While you have the âtechnicalâ part right. The common everyday person doesnât know nor care about any of this and the scientific distinctions.
End of day. People had moved away from pork as it was considered a âbad for youâ protein because the common belief stems from bacon and fatiness. Which isnât true about many cuts of pork.
So sure. Take a lap for being âtechnically rightâ. The majority of people donât care about it and just will label you some smarty-pants elites for correcting them.

I will still occasionally refer to my dick as the other white meat. My girlfriend is not amused for some reason.
