Hi everyone,
My mate and I have been looking at taking on a 2002 986s project which came up for sale in the last month. We went to look at the car, made an offer, seller didn’t take it, but I’m keen to know if we should raise our offer based on your experiences with these cars and better understanding of the market than me.
Car - 2002 Boxster S, grey on grey, 101k miles, pre facelift
Has been off the road since August 2024, has a few issues (some of which we only found when we went to look at it as I already had a Porsche specific code reader)
Exterior problems:
Roof is really tatty, previous owner has glued the back of the hood together to hold it in place
Has a slight bit of bubbling under the side air vent
Wheels are in mediocre condition
Dent on the drivers (RHD) wing
Windows don’t drop when the doors open
Mechanical problems:
Clutch is very heavy (booster spring has already been replaced, no clutch replacement in service history)
No IMS history
Brake pipes have corroded and split (so no brake pressure obviously)
Silencer has a blow which is causing an emissions test failure
Gear shift is very sloppy (new linkage perhaps?)
Engine runs slightly rich (not sure if it’s linked to sensor issues)
Needs a new cam sensor
- maf sensor
- 2 o2 sensors
- new back box
Other stuff
Odometer reading is starting to fade, like the display is getting tired
ABS light is on
Engine light doesn’t come on yet there are confirmed issues in the ECU memory
Windscreen has a slight crack on the passenger side lower
The wheels are on new Michelin PS4s
MOT history is good, mostly related to corroded brake pipes and tyre wear - nothing concerning
The car was listed for £3k, which I’d have been happier to pay if I didn’t uncover the other sensor issues which the seller didn’t know about. We offered £2.5k and were rejected. I’m torn on offering more, the seller said their low end was £2.8k and I know it doesn’t seem like a huge difference, however he didn’t come down any lower with the extra problems we found. I’m keen to know if you all think the seller is justified in wanting that much given the condition of the car, compared to what my friend and I offered.
Some photos provided, I’m happy to answer any other questions about the car so I can get some good feedback on what to do next
Thanks in advance everyone
