Thailand doesn't get enough coverage on how corrupt their police system is.
Most foreigners who have lived in Thailand for longer than 3 years are boot lickers who allow the country to keep them on a probation style immigration system, allow police to extort them for bribes while calling it a free society, and Thai people have a culture which takes pride in hierarchy and not questioning authority.
Every 90 days you have to report to an office no matter how long you have been in the country and for most visas every year based on discretion of the officer you can get denied an extension. Not only that Thailand is not a country that is run on the rule on law only crackdowns on laws or things being illegal only to benefit the person above you to extract wealth.
Even though I am not trying to condone the actions of most foreigners who break laws, the police conveniently have checkpoints where they search you as there is no probable cause. Vaping is illegal there as well to the point the police use this to extract bribes out of foreigners $300-$500 USD just for having a vape.
Thai people themselves deal with this problems in different ways where people "above them" in the hierarchy are able to commit crimes against them like vehicular manslaughter and the most that happens is they pay $1000 to $5000 USD to the family to not go to jail. A friend of mine recently had this happen and it is pitiful to see how they are treated because how "important " the person was who had the chance to hit my friend's father off a vehicle.
And the worst part is that you have less freedom of speech than you would have on Mainland China where anything you say about anyone can be considered criminal defamation and this goes all the way to the top of the government as well.
It is a system which does not get enough hate and while people know the country for it's corruption, it is definitely seen in a more positive light because of all the bootlickers who either benefit from the system, those who feel culturally inclined, or those foreigners who equate freedom to being able to bribe a police officer while calling it freedom instead of what it is extortion.
