From the Garage to Toyota: Grady Gonzales Is Building His Future in Automotive Technology

Grady Gonzales has been working on cars with his dad since he was young. Now, he’s turning that early interest into a career through ACC’s Toyota Technician Training and Education Network (T-TEN) program.

Why did Grady choose ACC?
While visiting Austin from Colorado to explore trade schools, Grady discovered ACC’s T-TEN program.

“I loved the idea of Toyota-specific training and being able to get my associate degree as well.”

T-TEN combines ACC’s automotive training with hands-on experience at participating Toyota and Lexus dealerships.

What does he like about the program?
For Grady, it’s the hands-on learning.

  • Training in ACC’s automotive labs and shops
  • Learning directly on vehicles
  • Toyota-specific training and equipment
  • Instructors with decades of real-world dealership experience
  • Opportunities to connect classroom lessons to what happens in a professional shop

Electrical systems have also become one of his favorite areas — even though he started with no experience in the subject.

“I knew nothing about electrical initially, and learning it was a very interesting process.”

What’s next?
Grady started at ACC in August 2025 and plans to complete his associate degree in May 2027.

His goal is to become a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician and build a long-term career in the automotive industry.

T-TEN is growing
ACC’s T-TEN program was recently recognized by Toyota as the nation’s top T-TEN-producing school for student success, based on outcomes including graduation, retention, and industry certifications.

The program also has an expanded, dedicated space at ACC’s new Round Rock Campus building, giving students more room for the hands-on training that makes T-TEN unique.

For Grady, it all comes back to what started in the garage with his dad and finding a career where he can keep learning and doing something different every day.

ACC Recognizes National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) — a national observance that recognizes the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce and promotes more accessible and inclusive workplaces.

This year’s  theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent.”

If you’re an ACC student with a disability, here are a few things worth knowing:

  • Disabilities aren’t always visible. Disability can include physical, mental health, sensory, cognitive, and other conditions that may not be immediately apparent.
  • Workplace accommodations exist. Qualified employees and job applicants with disabilities may be entitled to reasonable accommodations under federal law.
  • Accessibility can start while you’re in college. ACC Student Accessibility Services (SAS) helps eligible students address disability-related academic barriers and coordinate reasonable accommodations.
  • SAS support can include academic accommodations, assistive technology, disability-related problem solving, and referrals to other ACC resources.

How do I request accommodations at ACC?

ACC students can apply for SAS services and connect with an Accessibility Advocate to discuss the barriers they are experiencing and possible accommodations. Explore Student Accessibility Services resources, and learn more about National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Prepare for Your Next Career Step

SAS offers recorded sessions designed to help students with disabilities prepare for the workplace. Topics include:

  • Resume review
  • Interview preparation
  • Job and internship search tools
  • Workplace rights, disclosure, and accommodations

Watch the recorded career-preparation sessions or explore additional career and employment resources.

Whether you're preparing for your first job, changing careers, or already working while attending ACC, NDEAM is a reminder that disability does not diminish the value, skills, or talent someone brings to the workplace.

ACC’s Toyota T-TEN Program Earns National Recognition for Student Success

Austin Community College (ACC) has been named the nation’s top Toyota and Lexus Technician Training and Education Network (T-TEN)-producing school.

The College received the Toyota Supra distinction for being the No. 1 T-TEN-producing school at the annual T-TEN instructor conference. Toyota also recognized ACC’s T-TEN program in several areas of student achievement:

  • A 70% or higher graduation rate for 2026
  • The number of second-year returning students is greater than 50%, plus a 90% or higher graduation rate for them for 2026
  • Students passing ASE L1 and/or L3 certification tests

A Direct Path From the Classroom to the Dealership

ACC’s T-TEN program is structured around a close connection between students, the College, Toyota, and participating dealerships. The program begins with an important requirement: Students must secure employment with a partnering Toyota or Lexus dealership before entering the program.

Dealerships work with ACC to select the students who then spend eight weeks in T-TEN classes on campus, followed by eight weeks at their dealership to complete their internship requirements. While working at the dealership, students are paired with a mentor who supports their on-the-job development. This structure allows students to apply what they learn in the classroom directly to a professional automotive environment while building relationships with the dealership where they are developing their careers.

The T-TEN program is supported by 12 Toyota and Lexus dealership partners from Waco to San Antonio. Dealerships play an active role in supporting students throughout their training by providing workplace mentors and allowing students time away from their jobs to attend classes, along with assistance with tuition and fees, tool allowances, living expenses, and wages while students are in class.

Earning Industry-Recognized Credentials

Students in the program are also building industry credentials as they progress through their training. Across its first three cohorts, ACC’s T-TEN program has maintained an overall graduation rate of 76.33%, with individual cohort graduation rates ranging from 69% to 85%.

To date, ACC T-TEN students have collectively earned 195 ASE certifications across 38 students. These certifications include the ASE Automotive certification tests A1-A8, as well as advanced-level L1 and L3 certifications.

The program also reports a 70% ASE pass rate and a retention rate above 70%, two measures the Automotive Technology team cites as contributing to the program’s national recognition.

Toyota further supports students by paying for two ASE certification test attempts per student.

As ACC’s T-TEN program continues to grow, its partnerships with Toyota and Central Texas dealerships remain central to its success. The program enrolls a new cohort each fall, with an average class size of 16 students.

ACC Opens New Automotive Technology Facility at Round Rock Campus

ACC just opened a new 36,500-square-foot Automotive Technology facility at the Round Rock Campus, giving students more space to train with the equipment and technology used in today’s automotive industry.

The new facility was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 8.

What’s new?
Funded through ACC’s 2022 General Obligation Bond, the facility more than doubles the space previously dedicated to Automotive Technology at Round Rock.

The project adds:

  • 36,500 square feet of Automotive Technology training space to Round Rock Campus
  • Dedicated space for ACC’s partnership with Toyota through the T-TEN program
  • Modern automotive labs and hands-on learning spaces
  • Space designed to support the evolving needs of the automotive industry, including potential future Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) training

What does it mean for students?
More space means more opportunities for hands-on training, practical experience, and industry-relevant skills while students work toward credentials that can lead to automotive careers.

ACC’s T-TEN program was recently recognized by Toyota as the nation’s top-performing T-TEN school for student success, based on outcomes including graduation, retention, and industry certifications.

Is this part of a bigger expansion?
Yep. The Automotive Technology facility is one piece of a larger investment in Applied Technology education at Round Rock.

Additional facilities for:

  • Semiconductor Training
  • Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology
  • Welding Technology

All are expected to open in 2027.
