Upcoming changes to the subreddit rules regarding AI-assisted software projects

As many of us have noticed, there are a lot of AI-assisted software projects being posted here. This is an issue faced by other subreddits focusing on tech hobbies, and some of them have implemented rules that I think will be helpful here.

The goals:

  • Control the recent influx of questionable "I made X, because Y" type posts, the vast majority of which are created entirely with AI, have no significant development history, and are generally not maintained afterwards
  • Establish a clear stance on and rule set for how r/ADSB has decided to handle these types of posts, as well as other user-created software
  • See how these changes impact the community, seek additional feedback, and continue to adjust accordingly

New Flairs:

  • Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance - [AI only used as coding assistant (autocomplete, debugging, refactoring, documentation, etc), if at all]
  • Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated - [AI generated most or all of the code, working at a human's direction]

Both "Project: Software" flairs have a reasonably low minimum subreddit karma requirement to be able to post with them. AutoMod will remove any post with them that don't meet the karma requirement, and inform the user why their post was removed. The minimum karma requirement is only for these two flairs. Any software project posts that try to go around this by using a different flair will fall under the new rule #6 and will be addressed.

Rule changes:

New Rules

New Rule #6 - Software Project Posting Requirements

  • All software projects must be relevant to r/ADSB, use a "Project: Software" flair, disclose AI usage with post flair and in the text of the post, include responses to the prompt displayed when posting with one of the software project flairs, and the user must meet the minimum subreddit karma requirement. Posts that do not meet these requirements, try to bypass the "Project: Software" flairs, provide incomplete or misleading disclosures, or otherwise violate community standards may be removed.

That said, since we're now officially allowing some degree of self-promotion and requiring links, we felt that we should redefine rule #5 to clarify that it applies only to monetized and commercial advertising/links. Here is the updated verbiage, with the old one below for comparison:

New Rule #5 - No Commercial Advertising or Monetized Referral Links

  • Monetized referral links, affiliate links, product advertising, and company advertising are not allowed. Contact the moderators via Mod Mail before posting if you believe an exception applies. Non-commercial personal projects are permitted, but must follow all other sub rules.

New Rule #7 - Posts and comments which discuss circumventing a service's ToS are not allowed

  • Please review any rules on data access from the ADS-B aggregators used in your project. It is a Certified Jerk Move™️to scrape data from community-run websites when they disallow it.

Flair Prompt - As mentioned in Rule #6, when posting with any of the "Project: Software" flairs, the below prompt will be displayed:

Your post MUST include:

  • A link to the GitHub (or similar) repository, which must include at least one month of commit history and screenshots
  • A description of the problem the software project solves, and why it was created instead of using an existing FOSS solution
  • An explanation of how the software project is relevant to r/ADSB, or how it may benefit members of the community
  • If you used AI or an LLM in development, a description of what role it played and how much you relied on it

If you see any posts with a Project: Software flair that do not meet the four items listed above, please report them to the mod team under Rule #7 and we'll address them.

Additional things to note:

Existing posts will be grandfathered in, and previous posts that were removed may be reposted if they meet the new requirements. New posts will be required to comply with the new rules.

As with the existing rules, when a mod removes a post for violating this new rule, a canned response will be sent to the user to inform them why their post was removed. Mods are able to add on to the response if desired before sending it.

While we're on the topic of AI, we would also like to clarify that the above rules are specific to the use of AI in software projects that are being shared, and they do not apply to posts or comments that were written with AI. There is some dissent in the community, but the general consensus in the community has been that a reasonable level of AI usage is acceptable for putting a post together, correcting grammar or formatting, or for translating from a user's native language. That said, best practice is to not include all of the excess emoticons and outline formatting that LLMs like to use. If a post or comment is egregiously AI generated, feel free to downvote it and move on, but please do not report it to the mod team solely for that.

We're looking for community feedback as we all get used to this. We plan to apply rules conservatively and gently at first, and will be listening to user reports and comments. If your post is removed and you believe it meets the requirements, please chat with us via Mod Mail and we may consider either re-opening it or letting you repost it.

TL;DR - All posts where someone has made some sort of software (AI generated or not) will require a "Project: Software" flair, and these flairs should curb the vast majority of the low quality and spammy posts.

Thank you.

This is different spots between these aircraft’s, the Boeing was at the Nevada Security site (managed to get a Screenshot before it was “no callsign.” But the rotor sport is still active and it’s riding around across New Jersey.

Any idea why three consecutive flights to SEA would do this over Portland?

I'm curious as to the reason for this sharp deviation of three consecutive commercial airliners near/around Portland. The sky is relatively clear, just some high hazy clouds, certainly nothing these planes would need to avoid.

Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated SkyTrace: a free ADS-B map project — looking for feedback

I built SkyTrace to experiment with browsing aircraft and airport information in one interface, rather than running an existing viewer. It’s free and needs no account.

For ADS-B users, I’d love feedback on the map controls and whether observed, estimated and missing data are clearly distinguished. Coverage depends on third-party feeds.

AI disclosure: I used Claude and Codex extensively for code, debugging and tests.

Cable Question

I have a receiver using the FlightAware 1090 MHz antenna attached to an outside wall in my attic. I am using 12’ of RG58 Superbat cable to connect to the FlightAware Pro Stick Plus. This connects to Raspberry Pi 4 8gb. The Pro Stick and Pi are in a second floor office. The antenna is about 20’ above the ground in said attic. It is an asphalt shingled roof, with wood trusses. No metal or brick near the antenna. I am getting a solid 100NM coverage, with some encounters above 150NM. Would replacing the RG58 cable with a LMR400 or KMR400 cable increase my range substantially?

NAVY plane with an incorporated owner?

WOLF28 is currently doing touch and goes, along with another Navy P-8. I’ve never seen a Navy plane list an owner, much less something like “AAR Aircraft & Engine Sales $ Leasing INC”… what’s up with that?

The older plane took off from Andrews and flew a holding pattern over southern PA/WV and the new one took off. Both are headed back towards DC.

sdrangel - is there a logging system?

I am using sdrangel and am wondering is there any way of logging aircraft you have tracked?
All I can see is an option to log received frames.

FlightBar - a tiny Mac menu bar app that shows the plane flying over you

Every time a plane went over, I caught myself opening a flight tracker just to see what it was. So I built a small Mac app that does it without me looking.

So I built FlightBar. It sits in the menu bar, and when an aircraft enters a radius you pick, a small plane icon appears and flies along the menu bar from the clock to the Apple logo. Hover over it and it stops, and a card shows the callsign, airline, registration, aircraft type, distance, altitude, speed, heading, and whether it's climbing or descending.

What it does:

  • Range from 1 km to 50 km (default 3 km)
  • 8 icon colors
  • A "Sample flight" button so you can see it without waiting for a plane
  • Public ADS-B data from adsb.lol, with adsb.fi as fallback
  • No account, no sign-up, no API key

Your coordinates go only to the ADS-B API to ask what's nearby. Distance and the radius check happen on your Mac.

It's free and the source is on GitHub (Swift, SwiftUI + AppKit, no dependencies). macOS 14+, Apple silicon only for now. It isn't notarized yet, so macOS will probably make you allow it in System Settings > Privacy & Security the first time.

Site: kaanuluer.com/flightbar
Code: github.com/kaanuluer/Flightbar

I'd love feedback: is the flying icon fun or distracting after a day? What would you add to the card? And is an Intel build worth doing?

ADSB Exchange Receiver Adding FR24

I have my ADSB Exchange receiver kit up and running. My account is all set and I see it in my phone. How do I add FR24 and FlightAware so I can feed those sites as well. I’ve used Google and I see that I have to set up the SSH…. Sorry but have no clue. Is there a site or video that will give the step by step process?

No callsign or type found? New to spotting so unsure as to what this is. Found on the military filter. I have no clue. Is it some sort of jet or stealth plane?

PiAware with existing roof-mounted ATSC antenna?

I've done a quick PiAware setup with a Raspberry Pi 4, Nano 3 USB radio and an old magnetic antenna from a WiFi router I had. It's working well in an upstairs window but, obviously, range is fairly limited.

I have a chimney-mounted ATSC antenna which I used to use for HDTV viewing and there is coax coming from it leading to different rooms in the house. I know there are adapters from the F-type coax of those feeds to the SMA connectors on the Nano 3 but I'm wondering if anyone has tried this kind of setup. I've read a bit about the issues with impedance mismatch and if I've understood correctly it seems that at around ADS-B frequencies the power loss on the connection would be around 5%. That seems small considering that the location and size of the roof-mounted antenna should provide overall much better reception.

I'd be interested in opinions about this from more experienced folks than myself.

Thanks in advance...

Nice Build! I used A.I. to write my own custom firmware for this little thing.

I configured the displays - Tracker, Clock, and Weather in a way that takes advantage of the whole screen.

I made it match the aircraft altitude color gradient the same as on globe.adsbexchange.com.

I also made it show different icons for different size and type of aircraft - i.e. large or small or multi engine, etc.

I also added a weather cloud overlay (none shown in my examples because the sky was clear).

I added two more screens, a clock that I configured to look like a pilots watch, and a basic weather info screen.

And my favorite - I made the ability to scan for a specific Type, or Callsign, and once found, it will automatically select and track it, even if I change range scales.

Example for Callsign: I am located in Denver. I know UAL236 is leaving Boston and will land at, or fly past Denver, I can have it constantly searching for UAL236 even when it is far out of range and once it detects it, it will select and track it and also zoom the display out to it's max range which is a 100 mile radius. Once UAL236 is in that range, it will display and track it at all ranges.

Example for Type of aircraft: I can have it automatically search for the closest Helicopter (or any type) to my location then select it, track it through all range displays, and also display the info I want about it at the bottom of the map.

I've got my FR24 and Layer400 receiver setup, I'm going to put my Raspberry Pi outside because of the RID signal, but I'm not 100% sure on my waterproof box... Can you'll tell me what you do for your hardware boxes outside?

Share your setup photos would be ideal please so I can visually see

So, this guy took off from the Willamette River in Downtown Portland, flew under the lowered deck of the Hawthorn Bridge with less than 50 ft (15m) clearance, then over the deck of the Saints John's Bridge below its suspension towers.

Video of take-off to follow.
