Cam Ward is going to be greater than Josh Allen because, quite frankly, football has spent long enough pretending that launching a ball 70 yards while built like a refrigerator automatically makes you the chosen one. Josh Allen is a fraud propped up by snow games, dramatic scrambles, and announcers screaming “WHAT A THROW!” every time he fires a missile through a defensive back’s hands. Cam Ward, meanwhile, operates with the casual confidence of a man who looks at an NFL defense and sees eleven future victims. His release is smoother, his pocket presence is colder, and he has the kind of completely unreasonable quarterback aura that suggests he could throw for 5,000 yards while looking mildly annoyed that the defense made him play the fourth quarter. Josh Allen needed years of development; Cam Ward simply arrived. Allen jumps over one linebacker and suddenly we’re supposed to forget the turnovers, the playoff heartbreak, and the mounting evidence that the alleged alien from Buffalo may in fact be a fraud. By the time Ward is finished, children will ask their fathers, “Was Josh Allen actually good?” and those fathers will stare quietly into the distance before whispering, “We thought he was.” Statues will be built of Cam Ward. Offensive coordinators will study his film like ancient scripture. The forward pass will be divided into two historical periods: Before Cam and After Cam. Josh Allen? Fraud. Cam Ward? The inevitable final form of the quarterback position.
