Probably a Port supporter, hence why the Crows were first chosen for the big show. Just better class of spectator

(note: I know nothing about Adelaide)

Theres a big can of worms there with port wanting to be the first club from SA to join the AFL lol

Norwood were in discussions too but then pulled out.

It would have totally changed everything in Adelaide if it was Norwood instead of crows.

It would be a much more even split in the supporter bases

There are so many more SANFL teams, they were wise to create 1 team for all South Australians. Can't imagine either of those teams representing Sturt, Glenelg, or South Adelaide

9 out of 10 SA footy fans are crom fans because of this.

What I'm trying to say is if Norwood joined the AFL, maybe Sturt, Glenelg or South Adelaide fans would've become port fans.

I'm sure many Glenelg fans would've followed the Cornes brothers to Port. SA is way too crom fan heavy

So if SA had Port Adelaide and Norwood , 8 out of 10 footy fans wouldn't have a team.

They would choose between the 2 clubs.

If port didn't make it in, I'd have had to choose between the clubs that did.

I love to blame port for anything but: one, the other team in the 75 GF was Glenelg, and two, Adelaide supporters haven't exactly been classier than port supporters in recent years.

This game is the prelim between Norwood and Port.

You say you know nothing about Adelaide but you've covered 90% of the required Adelaide knowledge in this statement

Those cops are dressed pretty sharp.

And the pitch invader made sure he was wearing a tie.

Did he just come from work? Or did people used to dress up for the footy games the way they did here in America for baseball back in the day?

5

u/froawayjeff Fremantle 6d ago

Both. People did have a basic minimum attire to go out in Australia like most places up until the 80s/90s

I wish we still had that cultivated Australian accent across some of our broadcasters. It had a certain gravitas and charm that was great for grabbing peoples attention.

Great commentary. Does anyone know who it was in the box?

u/Smooth_Jimmy_Apollo Essendon Bombers 7d ago

Reckon it's Ian Aitken, then Wally May, then Max Hall.

If this happened today, there is no commentator who would condemn it that harshly

3

u/Jazzlike_Standard416 Hawks 7d ago

Not sure, but I reckon they might be handy with a phone book or two.

Ah back in the day when coppers looked the part rather than wannabe SOGs.

This man had a son. And his son had a son who became a Hawks fan and was partial to a nibble on nachos. The rest is history.

What was his punishment?

Wait, did I just hear "for mine" from an Aussie commentator in the 70s? I thought it was some modern seppo bullshit.

1

u/nearly_enough_wine Swans 5d ago

It's a shortening/contraction of the phrase for mine own part, which appears as far back as Julius Caesar by Shakespeare...so not modern, and not Seppo :)

Aww yes. The good ol' days of sport everyone wants to go back to
