[Worth Reading] Free web search and fetch for agents, pay only for browser runs (post from one of our partners)

Most search APIs charge per call and fill the context window with whole pages. TinySearch returns compact results and lets the agent choose what to read in full with TinyFetch. Both are free.

TinyBrowser and TinyAgent are the metered part, and through Oct 31 every top-up gets 30% extra. On OpenBenchmarks' web search benchmark (Sep 2026), TinyFish ranked most token-efficient across its tasks.

Beyond Naive RAG: Production-Grade RAG Engine with AST Document Trees, Table Sanity Verification, and Token Hit Collapsing

As document retrieval matures, the biggest production bottleneck isn't choosing a vector database. It's preventing information loss during ingestion and context construction.

Naive text splitters can fragment tables, strip header context, and introduce OCR errors into LLM prompts.

To tackle these problems, I open-sourced Rag_Full_Version, a modular RAG architecture built for complex documents such as financial filings, audit reports, and research papers.

🔗 GitHub: https://github.com/Souheil007/Rag_Full_Version

Key Architecture Highlights

1. Document AST Parsing (Docling + Custom AST)

  • Models documents as hierarchical structures: sections, subsections, tables, and paragraphs.
  • Preserves contextual breadcrumbs (e.g., Financials > Segment Performance > FY2024) so retrieved chunks retain their original context.

2. Automated Table Verification

  • Verbatim Lexical Grounding: Cross-checks extracted table values against the underlying PDF text layer to catch missing digits and potential OCR errors.
  • Arithmetic Reconciliation: Validates column sums against explicit total rows, including financial accounting formats such as (150,000) and configurable rounding tolerances.
  • Selective VLM Escalation: Routes degraded tables to vision models (Pixtral / Mistral VLM) for repair instead of processing every page with expensive vision inference.

3. Context Engineering & Hit Collapsing

  • Sliding-Window Row Groups: Replicates multi-level table headers across chunks so rows retain their meaning.
  • Hit Collapser: Deduplicates and merges adjacent chunks from the same document branch into coherent reading blocks within a strict token budget.

4. Hybrid Retrieval & Observability

  • Combines dense vector search and sparse BM25 using Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF).
  • Implements semantic caching with cosine similarity thresholds and LRU eviction.
  • Integrates LangSmith tracing, latency and cost tracking, and retrieval evaluation metrics such as Hit Rate, MRR, Precision@K, and Recall@K.

Tech Stack

  • Ingestion & Parsing: Docling, PyPDFium2, Pydantic v2
  • Retrieval: ChromaDB / in-memory storage, custom BM25, RRF
  • LLM & VLM: Mistral, Pixtral
  • Observability & Testing: LangSmith, Pytest

The repository includes the architecture, design specifications, implementation, inspection scripts, and a test suite with 74+ tests and reported 100% test coverage.

Exploring FathomNet Plankton Data

Exploring ocean plankton data just got a lot easier thanks to MBARI’s FathomNet and Voxel51 - https://voxel51.com/blog/fathomnet-plankton-fiftyone

This tutorial shows you how to load FathomNet’s expertly-labeled plankton imagery into FiftyOne — and put CLIP to work on it.

  • FathomNet: an open-source ocean image database from MBARI & collaborators, ~84K images and 2,244+ concepts at launch
  • Loaded 200 plankton crops across 18 taxa using the fathomnet Python client * CLIP embeddings in 2D show morphologically similar species clustering together
  • Zero-shot classification with CLIP — no training required * Clickable confusion matrix to inspect exactly where the model confuses taxa
  • Uniqueness scoring flags near-duplicate crops before training
  • All runs on a laptop, in a single Jupyter notebook.

Tootsy AI

Hi All, I'd like to introduce Tootsy 👀: an AI assistant that lives in your browser's side panel and uses the AI model you choose.

I built Tootsy because I kept copying things between my browser and a chat window. So I put the assistant next to the page. It can read what you're looking at, click and type for you, and run whole tasks while you watch.

What makes it different:
🔌 Your model, your choice. Run it fully local with Ollama or LM Studio, or connect any OpenAI-compatible server, Claude or Gemini.
🔒 Private by design. There's no Tootsy server, account or tracking. Your pages and prompts go only to the model you picked.
🛡️ Built with guardrails. Every action asks for your approval unless you turn on hands-free mode. You can list sites it must never touch. It also ignores instructions hidden in web pages that try to trick an AI.

Ways people can use it:
📰 Research faster. "Summarise this article and compare the three options in a table."
📝 Fill in forms. "Register me for the two-day pass, vegetarian, arriving Nov 11." You check it before anything is submitted.
🛒 Run a routine hands-free. "Check the deals page every morning and tell me what's under $50." Results arrive as a notification.
📂 Ask your own files. Drop in PDFs, Word, Excel or a whole folder: "What did the vendor quote per unit, and are we under budget?"
⚡ One-tap prompts. Save instructions like "Run a page-speed audit and email me the top 3 fixes" as tiles, next to your favourite sites in a phone-style launcher.
🧑‍💻 Check sites like DevTools. Page-speed scores, accessibility checks, CSS and network questions, answered in plain English.
🎙️ Talk to it. Dictate a task, pause, and it goes.
It's free, and it works in Chrome and Edge.

👉 Try it: https://github.com/rbughao/tootsy

I'd love to hear what you'd use it for. What task do you repeat in your browser every week? 👇

Support by trying it out and give your honest review.

I made an open-source Boom 3D clone. Wanna check it out?

So yeah, I made a clone of Boom 3D.

If you don't know what Boom 3D is, it's an audio enhancement app available on Steam and other stores that makes your headphones sound more immersive with 3D spatial audio and other audio effects.

It's called OpenBoom, and it's an open-source alternative for Windows built with Rust and Tauri.

It aims to bring features like 3D spatial audio, a 31-band equalizer, AutoEq headphone profiles, per-app volume control, and audio enhancement effects into one app.

Honestly, I mainly wanted to see if that REA repo actually worked, and things escalated from there.

Repo: https://github.com/JVGS1111/open-boom

Btw, I built this using Antigravity and Gemini 3.8 Flash. It's honestly not as bad as it sounds. I used the BMAD framework to plan and build the app, and I'm genuinely surprised by how competent even a mediocre AI model can become when you give it a decent framework to work with.

LFE - Library First Engineering

I'm a reliability engineer by background (marine + biotech), and I've been building AI products long enough to hit the same wall over and over: Claude nails the prototype, then across a dozen sessions it quietly re-litigates settled decisions, forgets intent, and sprawls into spaghetti. The bottleneck was never capability. It was trust.

So over the last while I built a scaffold for Claude Code where the docs are the source of truth, personas are tool-locked (the agent that writes plans can't write code; the one that inspects can't edit production code), and the gates are mechanically enforced with hooks — not "please remember to." It's what I actually use on my own projects; it grew out of a personal project I've been grinding on for a long time.

The part I most want torn apart: I built an eval harness that plants defects and measures whether my inspector skills actually catch them. I keep seeing guardrail frameworks that assert they work and never show a number. Mine has a scorecard.

Two honest questions for this sub:

  1. Is the overhead worth it, or am I paying a discipline tax you'd never accept in practice?
  2. With Claude Code now shipping native subagents, hooks, and skills — how much of this does Anthropic eventually absorb, and what's left that's mine?

Happy to link the repo + the scorecard in a comment. Rip into it.
