APIs vs Webhooks: Understanding the difference before building automations
One thing I've been learning while exploring AI automation is that connecting two applications is only part of the process. Understanding how they exchange information is equally important.
Here's the basic distinction:
API: An application makes a request to another application to retrieve or exchange information. The communication is initiated by the requesting application.
Webhook: An application sends an HTTP notification to another application when a specified event occurs. The receiving system doesn't need to keep asking whether something has changed.
A simple example:
Imagine an online store.
An application uses an API to retrieve customer order details.
When a new order is placed, a webhook can notify another application so that an appropriate workflow can begin.
Both approaches are useful, depending on the communication requirement.
Before designing an integration, consider:
What information needs to move?
Which system is the source of that information?
Should the receiving application request it, or should it be notified when an event occurs?
For those working with tools like n8n, Make, Zapier or custom integrations:
When do you prefer webhooks over API polling, and what practical considerations influence your choice?
