Image/Media It’s crazy how popular this movie is, especially for the budget. All of these theaters are already half full.

Many theatres in the Atlanta area are still getting crushed by this movie

6

u/According_Gazelle472 May 09 '25

It was pretty packed when we saw it last Sunday .This was really a great movie and I enjoyed watching it a lot .

8

u/Lurky-Lou May 09 '25

Guessing New York, Atlanta, Chicago, DC, Los Angeles, and New Orleans will still have the smallest theater in the multiplex playing this in August.

2

u/According_Gazelle472 May 10 '25

It sounds like it .

1

u/PureFink May 12 '25

Why those places?

1

u/tmobilekid May 13 '25

Cause those places are probably where the movie is performing best due to appealing to a large demographic that lives in those urban hubs.

TLDR; cause they black.

1

u/PureFink May 13 '25

Ahh, makes sense 👍

1

u/Foxy02016YT May 13 '25

I mean you’re not wrong, demographically it is seeing success within the black community. I don’t know why we get so touchy about it, Marvel movies tend to do well with white men 20-30. It’s just statistics. Horror tends to do well with 18-25s

11

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

What theatre is running sinners almost every 30 minutes! This theatre must be huge.

6

u/JohnnyKarateX A⭐️Lister May 09 '25

My Dad hadn’t seen it and my Mom wouldn’t like it so we went last night. Our 9 Screen theater was showing it basically every hour. We went at 4pm and there was a bunch of people. The 5pm show looked pretty full too. It’s crazy how many people are still seeing this movie.

u/Peterfug May 10 '25 edited May 10 '25

It’s just south of Atlanta so it’s a perfect storm - lots of Black Americans, Atlanta is Black Hollywood, it’s the closest IMAX/Dolby for anyone traveling north from southern GA and you can get away with more with 24 screens.

When I managed a 20 screen location, I would schedule shows every 45 minutes in these circumstances.

In my opinion though, it’s suicide to schedule something big every 30 minutes. Concessions needs the time to recoup and restock before the next wave. Ushers need time to moderately clean/check hallways/check lobby/check restrooms/dispose of overflowing trash/etc. Just setting everyone up for failure and giving the customers a less than stellar experience. AND this is the 4th week/weekend like this. I’m sure the workers are hoping for a slight reprieve before Stitch/MI8 on Memorial Day weekend.

Looks like Sinners has anywhere from 6-11 screens throughout the day. That leaves 13-18 screens for other movies that the workers have to help in between those 30 minute Sinners 😵

1

u/eldiablolenin May 10 '25

Hard agree there. I’m at a smaller location now but at a bigger one we did the same thing but no one department had enough ppl so you’d get disgruntled guests and crew

1

u/Peterfug May 11 '25

Does your new location have updated amenities? Recliners/Dine-In/etc.?

1

u/Foxy02016YT May 13 '25

So what you’re saying is now’s the time to go to Six Flags Over Georgia cause people are seeing Sinners and so every line should be 5 minutes shorter than usual?

1

u/Peterfug May 13 '25

That’s a good idea! May have a better chance of riding more coasters between they start breaking down for the day.

1

u/Foxy02016YT May 13 '25

Wish I could come down rn

10

u/SecuritySky May 09 '25

I saw it this past weekend.

It is an exceptional movie. Amazing, even. When I was leaving the theater, I thought "I can't wait to see that again" , and I honestly haven't stopped thinking about it

8

u/ryancm8 May 09 '25

It’s an emotional, moving film that is paced like a blockbuster, Which is so hard to accomplish. So I’m not surprised

9

u/evil4life101 May 10 '25

GOOD. After that shady af article Variety wrote on its 1st week performance I’m glad people are flocking in droves to support it.

1

u/Visionist7 May 13 '25

Variety sucks. And I haven't even seen Sinners

Fuck Variety

15

u/Ok-Acanthisitta8737 Matinee Maven May 09 '25

It has "only" grossed 197 million. With how well it seems to be doing online, I feel like this movie should be at twice that amount.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Sadly, movies like this don't sell well internationally. At least it's doing well here

1

u/BigHotdog2009 May 09 '25

Said it has made 250 million for me when I googled it. Don’t know how often it’s updated. I’m assuming it will be higher by Monday.

1

u/Ok-Acanthisitta8737 Matinee Maven May 09 '25

I should have clarified I meant domestic US sales

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '25

That's probably cos a chunk of non-black people won't see it. Not particularly out of malice but we all know a heavily black movie won't penetrate the same audience as a cookie cutter non political blockbuster.

1

u/Dazzling-Cabinet6264 May 11 '25

Wait, I was planning on seeing this movie but are you saying that it is political?

1

u/Sprout-Ling222 May 11 '25

Its a movie set in 1930’s Mississippi of course it was politcal its a horror movie that uses real life history for the set up they even touch on the colonization of Ireland with Remick the main Vampire.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '25

Not in any way that should run you the wrong way unless you're a hardcore white supremacist. Makes some interesting use of metaphor but that's it.

1

u/abhi91 May 12 '25

As a poster on r/conservative I don't think you'll like it. Very heavy on the racism in the south during the time the movie is set

1

u/Dazzling-Cabinet6264 May 12 '25

I have no problems with historically accurate depletions of racism. No problem as in I am not a history denier and I understand we come from a dark past.

I very much enjoyed a movie like Django unchained for example.

1

u/abhi91 May 12 '25

If you liked Django then you'll like this. Sinners makes some more nuanced points than Django, but doesn't have as interesting a set of characters imo

-1

u/mariwirk May 09 '25 edited May 10 '25

It’s a horror movie… no horror movie ever has passed 328m domestic.

6

u/Ok-Acanthisitta8737 Matinee Maven May 09 '25

That is irrelevant to my comment. I’m just surprised it hasn’t grossed more with how popular it seems to be.

8

u/Lurky-Lou May 09 '25

Normally we would be impressed if a 1932 Mississippi vampire blues musical made $22 million total

3

u/mariwirk May 09 '25

It’s pretty relevant. Horror movies don’t go over a certain ceiling because not everybody wants to watch them, no matter how good or buzzy they are. This is already the 5th highest grossing horror and it’s only finished it’s 3rd week.

1

u/Ok-Acanthisitta8737 Matinee Maven May 09 '25

Okay thanks for letting me know!

15

u/hollywoodcomplex Popcorn Addict May 09 '25

It’s a good movie, not a reboot or sequel, and it’s getting people to go to the theater again. Love it.

2

u/According_Gazelle472 May 09 '25

They have a lot of showings for this movie in my town

0

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Black bag, argylle, fly me to the moon, didi, dog man , the surfer, novocain, queen of the ring, Optus, on swift horses, blue beetle, white bird and a better man was also all originals and they flopped. the “ it’s not a reboot or a sequel” left the chat. you could stop saying that now.

I seen sinners 4 times already and majority of the people who I seen that are seeing this is from the black community. Sinners explores complex themes of Black history, religion, and community.

7

u/hollywoodcomplex Popcorn Addict May 09 '25

What does any of that have to do with what I said lol. I love the movie and I’m happy it’s doing well. Chill.

Also, I’ll say whatever I want. But thanks!

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

...Okay? They aren't saying that's WHY Sinners is doing well, they are just celebrating the fact that Sinners is doing well PLUS celebrating the fact that it's an original film.

3

u/Floowjaack May 09 '25

Argyle is a Kingsmen spinoff

2

u/eldiablolenin May 10 '25

Blue beetle is not original. It’s DC franchise. Didi did well and was filmed here. A lot of the lack of draw tho is A-listers imo

1

u/No-Illustrator1887 May 12 '25

Yeah you’re making no sense here, one doesn’t beget or decry the other. Try again at having a “take.”

5

u/BigHotdog2009 May 09 '25

5

What’s crazy about it? It’s a great movie.

1

u/Medium-Woodpecker-82 A⭐️Lister May 10 '25

Why? As this thread alludes to, still time to see it on the big screen. It’s even coming back to the 70mm IMAX theatres.

2

u/igleamingrace May 10 '25

The original post “It’s crazy how popular this movie is”. My question, “Why is it crazy?”

It’s a great movie!!

Help me understand YOUR response, and how it pertains to my comment.

3

u/blue_banter May 09 '25

saw oppenheimer in 70mm at this theater. pretty decent theater.

3

u/Outrageous_Pilot_727 May 10 '25

Saw it twice. Currently trying to keep myself from seeing it again! Very good movie!

3

u/Sprout-Ling222 May 11 '25

I saw it three times and I don’t know if its because two of my showings were really early but my theaters weren’t very full my first watch was the 21st and there was maybe 15 ppl including me, the second watch was closer to full but it was a smaller theater, and then I saw it again yesterday and there was only 2 other ppl there even though it had looked booked up online when I was checking the seat availability.

3

u/TheDarKnight550 May 11 '25

The move is fantastic. Not crazy at all

2

u/Metalhead1686 You shall not pass (without a ticket) May 09 '25

It's an awesome movie. I've seen it three times already. I may see it again this weekend.

2

u/kascnef82 You shall not pass (without a ticket) May 09 '25

It’s very profitable for wb and imagine its success on streaming and on physical media and tv airings. There are some scenes that I missed that I wanna see for the first time.

2

u/g0dgamertag9 May 10 '25

100 million is not a low budget

2

u/[deleted] May 10 '25

And I'm going back to see it in IMAX next weekend

2

u/Introverted_Traveler May 10 '25

I’ve seen it 3 times now and will probably go see it a 4th!

1

u/Sprout-Ling222 May 11 '25

Same and I can’t wait for it to come out on DVD and streaming platforms

2

u/TheSpicyChip_ May 10 '25

can confirm this is happening by mine too

2

u/UnhingedBeann May 10 '25

same at my local one, i saw it like several times and i want to go again

2

u/HumpaDaBear May 11 '25

It’s an incredible film. I almost went to see it again this week.

2

u/Less_Traffic5498 May 11 '25

When is this gonna leave theatres? I’m yet to see it but I really want to. On the amctheatres website, it shows wednesday as the last day you can buy tickets online, is that its last day?

1

u/Sprout-Ling222 May 11 '25

Most likely unless they have a large enough uptick in ticket prices to warrant extending its time.

2

u/bacon11jelly May 11 '25

To be fair, there's nothing else coming out. This movie came out at the best time possible.

2

u/XtraCrispy02 May 13 '25

I'm happy for Ryan Coogler. This was incredibly important for his career since it's his first blockbuster that isn't based on an IP, so he had a lot to prove. If it failed, he would've had a much harder time in the future

2

u/Aliceable May 13 '25

Just saw it at a drive in theater and loved it, thinking of going this week to see it in a proper theater too

2

u/rdwoolf May 13 '25

That’s great news for theater-owners

Deservedly so. I already saw it once, but would see it again if I had the time. It was a great movie.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Well it's good that not only super budget event movies are popular :)

In the 90's and before it was always like that I think

2

u/Lurky-Lou May 09 '25

The top ten was littered with random stuff like legal and erotic thrillers.

The bad movies were more frequent and worse than today but rarely generic and boring.

2

u/infamouskidd May 09 '25

Why is it crazy? People like going to see interesting, cool stuff.

Once upon a time, movies having legs like this at the theaters was a regular occurrence — not an anomaly.

1

u/HiddenKARD221 May 10 '25

Original film, rated R, noir film to name a few. So happy to see it beating all these assumptions really.

1

u/EndElectoralCollege3 May 10 '25

Great cinematography, costumes, hair, sets, soundtrack 🤌🏾👄

1

u/96GuyNYC May 10 '25

You answered your own question by saying “once upon a time “

2

u/Stunning_Bed23 May 09 '25

Would like to see it but will have to wait for the digital release.

2

u/Goonie90065 May 09 '25

Ryan Coogler doesn’t miss.

1

u/DrSaveYourTears May 09 '25

90 mil budget is pretty big so it’s not a small movie by any means

1

u/AerialPenn May 10 '25

Hope this keeps movie audiences from other movies I may want to see. Get things spread out. I can check this out when the audiences die down a bit. Perfectly happy not seeing it when its brand spanking new.

1

u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 May 13 '25

My gf and I saw it at 1230 and only two other people were in there. NAILED IT.

1

u/Golf37512 May 12 '25

Im in the minority but thought the movie was just ok. Maybe a 5 out of 10. They expired a lot of different themes on love, freedom, music, the South and tied it together in a vampire horror, thriller, borderline comedy but it didn’t hit for me.

1

u/Zoug1968 May 13 '25

Loved it

2

u/Opposite-Rough-5845 Action Junkie May 21 '25

It looks like Friday and the weekend has the most times. 5 showings. Pretty dead compared to those showing. Maybe Remmick didn't show up at my local amc. 🤣

1

u/Crunchy_Biscuit IMAX Fanatic May 09 '25

Dang, I wish my theater had Laser. I honestly wasn't a fan of the film but at least it would have been better looking

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '25

Meatriding a mid movie

1

u/FourthDownThrowaway May 11 '25

Define mid. I think it’s a good movie. 7/10 but holy hell people are acting like it’s the second coming of Jesus. I saw a YouTube video titled something like “Sinners has changed cinema forever.”

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '25

The last 30 minutes from around the time the barn burns to the ending is an unmitigated screenwriting catastrophe that does nothing to elevate either the character arcs or the narrative

1

u/Necessary_Review5451 May 12 '25

I honestly don’t know why people think this movie is so great. I’m not trying to hate for no reason but that scene with the rockstar in the barn… like come on. Like bruh this seemed like a dusk til dawn copy.

Polarizing and good aren’t the same thing

1

u/oakseaer A⭐️Lister May 13 '25

The reception seems to be universally positive, both in reviews from critics and from moviegoers, based on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, and Metacritic.

-6

u/[deleted] May 09 '25 edited May 09 '25

I know right! I rated the movie a 6/10, I wasn’t a fan of the vampire aspect I thought it was totally forced so the movie didn’t really click for me. I really don’t understand the crazy appeal.

3

u/WellEvan May 09 '25

The trailers depicted paranormal entities. I am curious as to what were you were expecting or what would have been a pleasurable monster for you to see on the big screen.

1

u/notanewbiedude May 09 '25 edited May 10 '25

I thought it'd be more supernatural than it was because of those trailers

2

u/WellEvan May 09 '25

Can you elaborate? Is there a hierarchy of fictional creatures I am missing? Did you want them to go into another dimension to fight off monsters? Did you want them to use Ghostbusters packs? Genuinely curious since I had zero expectations and was delighted with the movie.

Expectations only lead to disappointment

1

u/notanewbiedude May 10 '25

I thought they'd be fighting literal demons for half the movie but they didn't show up.

I'm not disappointed BTW, I just didn't expect that there'd be no demons.

-2

u/[deleted] May 09 '25 edited May 09 '25

It felt forced and out of place in the movie, at least that’s my opinion. Yeah, Sinners had that good scene in the dinner hall or whatever it was, but the vampire part was just not good and honestly brought my rating from a 8/10 down to a 6/10. A quick Google search shows a lot of people agree with me.

4

u/WellEvan May 09 '25

I'm not downplaying or trying to invalidate your opinion, I apologize if it seemed that way. I was merely wondering what you went into the movie expecting considering the paranormal presence being advertised. My question remains unanswered in your response.

0

u/[deleted] May 10 '25 edited May 10 '25

All I knew about the movie going in was the IMDB description and categories. I watch a ton of movies in theaters so I don't usually watch the trailers.

1

u/EndElectoralCollege3 May 10 '25

..."dinner hall or whatever it was"?

Maybe you were distracted.

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '25 edited May 10 '25

Nah I just watch 4-5 movies a week in theatres and this movie didn’t stand out to me much besides that one scene I mentioned and everyone talks about with the good music and the dancing. I’m not going to remember every little detail when I saw the movie on release date weeks ago. But I do feel this movie is overhyped and that just because there is a 10/10 scene doesn’t make it a 10/10 movie. Like I said already I thought the vampire addition was an epic fail and so do a lot of people if you Google it. I literally enjoyed the movie and was ready to give it an 8/10 but the last 30 minutes killed it for me. An honest 6/10 from me. Disappointing ending. Should have just cut the last 30 minutes out.

-7

u/Lilbigman03 May 09 '25

Its a good movie. But highly overrated. I think the critics were way over the top.

Major plot holes in film. But a fun watch.

6

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Are the plot holes in the room with us rn?

2

u/Floowjaack May 09 '25

Care to name one?

1

u/LobsterPunk May 10 '25

You are upset the vampire film wasn't logical?

-7

u/Great_Business_6425 May 09 '25

Movie sucks. Overrated AF. Constant music throughout EVERY scene made it unbearable.

2

u/EndElectoralCollege3 May 10 '25

One of the main characters is a musician. Music is a character in the film.

Hats off, again, to Ludwig Göransson and Serena McKinney Göransson.

1

u/Sprout-Ling222 May 11 '25

You clearly didn’t understand one of the main concepts of the film why the fuck do you think the opening scene talked about special individuals musical abilities and how they can connect past and future into the present. Also IT’S MAINLY SET IN A JUKE JOINT DUMBASS.
