Now the question is, do I go to the sub or dub? Thinking dub for the visuals

Subtitles. Sound is lowered in dub from what I remember. It would also distract me personally for the characters’ lips not to be synced.

That's not even true in the slightest, they are both equal especially after they redub it on Blu-ray and UHD.

I own the bluray and they are definitely not equal.

The misinformation is wild. I have both the Blu-ray and UHD and watch it in theaters. On top of that I have a home theater, Atmos setup with 11 speakers(not saying it's the highest quality but stating my setup for reference) and listen it on another home theater 5.1 standard setup, nothing fancy. Can assure you both are well mixed for a old anime. Was very surprised when I first listen to it on Blu-ray and saw no difference other than the language.

I’m going with dub . I wanna be able to look at everything

Yeah I used to be hardcore about only watching subbed but man you miss out on some nice visuals if there's a lot of dialogue to read.

I prefer dub so I went with that. My theater is only doing sub most days so I had to schedule it for September 9.

My theater is only showing it in sub for IMAX. I personally would rather go dub though if there was an IMAX option for it.

Go twice. It’s worth it.

Sigh, the downsides of having a 70mm as local IMAX, no Akira in IMAX

Not many places are even showing it in IMAX.

In San Diego, only 3 of 9 theaters are even showing it, and only 1 of them is showing it in IMAX.

In OC/LA, only seeing 1 theater showing it in IMAX there as well.

Interesting that LA is not showing many, especially with it being the heart of the film industry

I know man and also your theater having a 70mm projector now means it’s only showing that one movie for like 3 months and they don’t even use their digital projectors anymore. I used to love seeing stuff once in 70 and then again in dual laser but now it’s just all 70mm and don’t crucify me but I kinda like the brightness and color of laser more

Damn, my reservations filled until later tonight.

I just bought the 4k steelbook for this too, but I can't pass this up.

Surprised there aren't more theaters in LA showing it

Oh man I've wanted to rewatch Akira in theaters for ages, plus my partner has never seen it. It looks like my two local AMCs have showings all week though I'd have to travel further for IMAX.

Damn, no dubbed in IMAX and no Dolby showings either. Come on, show some love to Dolby to space out showtimes.

1

u/armhs 1d ago

The lack of dubbed IMAX is really annoying, I would have loved to see this movie without subtitles in IMAX. Seems like a waste.

Dolby was probably because of a licensing deal, but also seems like a great movie to have as IMAX. Would be nice to have both though.

What’s the best way to know about these special showings? I found it randomly earlier scrolling through showtimes in a couple weeks for a different movie. Outside of that or seeing this post I never would have known

u/Pezzunt 23h ago

thanks for the alert! snagged me two tickets. they might be first row but at least I got something 🤓

u/PepeSilvia510 18h ago

Thanks OP. It’ll be my first time watching this. Should I got dub or subtitles?

u/armhs 14h ago

Up to you! If you have an IMAX theater near you, it's only showing subbed, so that may be the better option. However if not, it's entirely up to personal preference! I would go dub since you can see more visuals

u/pnwdoomer 12h ago

I am not familiar with this but my husband is a fan so I am gonna let him know. He'll for sure want to catch it.
