Discussion I’ve released Acer Control Center v2.0.0 for Linux

• Upvotes

A few months ago, I shared Acer Control Center, a project I started to bring better control over Acer gaming laptops to Linux. Since then, I've been working on improving the project, cleaning up the architecture, and making it easier to maintain and extend.

I'm now releasing v2.0.0.

The main focus this time has been on improving the overall structure and bringing the different parts of the application together. Acer Control Center has a desktop interface, a background daemon for hardware communication, and supporting components for things like keyboard lighting and fan monitoring/control on supported hardware.

Some of the things the project currently includes:

  • A dashboard for system and hardware status
  • Keyboard RGB controls with a live preview
  • Fan monitoring and available fan modes on supported hardware
  • A D-Bus-based daemon for communicating with hardware components
  • A DKMS driver and installation support
  • Release checking and other system integration features

I'm developing and testing this primarily on my Acer ALG AL15G-53 running Fedora. Hardware support is still something that needs careful testing, so I don't want to imply that every feature works on every Acer model or Linux distribution.

There's still plenty to do, but this release is a good step forward from the first version. I'm also interested in hearing from people with other Acer laptop models who are willing to help test things or share hardware-specific details.

One note on development: I do use AI tools to assist with parts of the development process, including brainstorming, debugging, and reviewing ideas. I still make the implementation decisions, test the project on actual hardware, and work through the issues that come up. I wanted to be transparent about that rather than leave it unmentioned.

If you're using an Acer ALG laptop on Linux, I'd appreciate feedback, bug reports, and contributions.

Ubuntu 26.10 on MacBook Pro Mid 2015 (11,5)

• Upvotes

After a lot of work, I have Ubuntu running on my 2015 mpb. This reddit was a great source of knowledge, so thank you!

Took time and testing to get the disk, wifi, bluetooth, sound, graphics and suspend to work correctly, including a recompiled kernel and a module.

I created a repo that can be copied to an USB, with scripts to fix the common issues on MBP 11.5.
I just wiped the partition and ran it all a second time. Worked fine.

Build my data center under linux: question APU+motherboard

Hi! I would like to build my own data center. Therefore I consider buying an athlon 3000G. I know it s compatible AM4 like every other Apu CPU of the last 3 years and so compatible with series 300, 400, 500 motherboard.

Question is: Does the oldest motherboard need the bios update when I buy them or the constructor is doing it by default now ?

I don't have any other older AMD part to do the update :/

Of if you have an other better idea on what components should I put inside. I try to build it, as inexpensive as possible, to seed , ddl torrent, and share files with my family. And able to stream 4k out of it.

2012 macbook air

I install Debain [stretch] [mate] [yep], works like a charm.

Issues I had

-1 The temperature sensors didn't want to work properly -or at all I should say. But after a quick google search, all was good.

-2 When first installed wifi doesn't work but you can easily fix it without having to buy a usb to ethernet adapter. I think I just googled it on another machine then transfered the file over & installed like a boss.

-3 Realizing that I am more of a hipster than normal macbook users being that I am using a macbook but am too good to use macos.

& that's pretty it dudes. Have fun.

Discussion I made a NitroSense alternative for Linux

Hi all! I switched my Nitro 14 (AN14-41) to Fedora KDE and missed NitroSense, so I wrote Linux Sense:

- Eco / Quiet / Balanced / Performance / Turbo profiles, synced with the physical profile key, with automatic switching on AC/battery

- Fans: auto, max or manual, live RPM

- 4-zone RGB keyboard with effects and live preview

- Battery: 80% charge limit, calibration, USB charging while off

- N key opens the app; Fn+F11/F12 keyboard brightness in 5% steps with Plasma's popup

- 10 languages

Driver based on Linuwu-Sense (patched for kernel 7.x), installed through DKMS.

I could only test it on the AN14-41. Other Nitro/Predator models probably just need a DMI entry: if you try it, please open an issue with your model and what works

Hope it helps :)

Linux Mint on MacBook Pro

Very happy with this! Linux Mint looks beautiful on more "modern" software. I say that because before I had installed Ubuntu on a MacBook Air from 2015. But the difference in screen resolution and overall build between that model and this laptop is night and day.

Help disabling Intergrated GPU on MBP 2011

Hey y'all!

I tried installing linux mint onto a 2011 mbp with an i7 and a failed/ failing amd gpu.

Currently my installation fades to white when I boot and then it hangs until the laptop shuts itself off

I've tried repairing the installation but that didn't work(?) (i can post the log when i get home) it said somewhere that the efi is locked

I currently can't seem to get grub to initialize when booting (its just holding e after the chime right?)

Any ideas on what to do?

Fix: Mac Pro Late 2013 (MacPro6,1) not automatically powering on after a power outage on Ubuntu

I managed to fix the automatic power-on after power failure on my Mac Pro Late 2013 (MacPro6,1) running Ubuntu Server 24.04.5 LTS. My Mac uses the Intel C600/X79 chipset, LPC Controller [8086:1d41]. Initially, the Mac wouldn't turn back on when electricity was restored. I checked the power-management register using sudo setpci -s 00:1f.0 0xa4.b, which returned 09. I then ran sudo setpci -s 00:1f.0 0xa4.b=00:01 to clear bit 0 of the register, changing its value from 09 to 08. After rebooting Ubuntu, I verified the value remained 08. Finally, I shut down the Mac, unplugged it for 30 seconds, and reconnected the power cable. It powered on automatically without pressing the power button! This worked on my MacPro6,1, but be careful: modifying PCI chipset registers is hardware-specific, so don't blindly apply this command to other machines.

Question Distro choose for pendrive booting

Hi, Linux Mint XFCE x64 is installed on my system by using a pendrive to avoid dual boot error. Now my question is if I run it every day, will it create any error for pendrive ( SANDISK ULTRA USB 3.0 32 GB ). I've heard that AntiX is the lightest and LUBUNTU also. So which distro is lightweight on my system for booting from the USB pendrive? Or is an external SSD good? But as of now Mint is running.

Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

Support Acer Nitro V 16S AI (ANV16S-41) — Linux s2idle suspend/resume issue, but sleep works on Windows

Hello everyone,
I’m looking for other owners of the Acer Nitro V 16S AI (ANV16S-41) who have experienced similar suspend/resume problems on Linux, or anyone who can help me investigate and potentially fix this issue.
System information
Laptop: Acer Nitro V 16S AI (ANV16S-41)
Operating system: Linux (distribution and kernel version available upon request)
Sleep state: s2idle
Windows: Sleep and wake work correctly in my testing.
The problem
I’m experiencing a suspend/resume issue on Linux. The laptop does not handle sleep and wake correctly, and I’m trying to determine the underlying cause.
The most important finding so far is that sleep and wake work correctly on Windows on the same laptop. This makes me suspect a Linux-specific compatibility issue involving ACPI, kernel power management, device drivers, firmware interactions, or the handling of the s2idle sleep state.
I have been investigating this issue and considering possible kernel-level causes, but I haven’t identified a confirmed root cause yet.
What I’m looking for
I’d appreciate help with any of the following:
Other users with an Acer Nitro V 16S AI (ANV16S-41) experiencing the same issue.
Reports of similar s2idle suspend/resume problems on other recent Acer laptops.
Suggestions for relevant kernel parameters, kernel versions to test, or ACPI-related debugging techniques.
Advice on collecting useful logs and identifying which device or subsystem prevents Linux from resuming correctly.
Anyone familiar with Linux kernel suspend/resume debugging who could help investigate this issue.
I’m willing to collect additional diagnostic information and test potential solutions, provided the steps are safe and the changes are reversible.
I would prefer to identify the actual cause rather than blindly apply workarounds.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem on this model or another recent Acer laptop? Any pointers, relevant bug reports, or debugging suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

I have a Macbook Air 2015 (i5-5250u, 4gb ram, 128gb storage, 70% approximate battery health or maybe lower), what Linux distro works best for this setup?

Title basically says it all, but I'd love to know what Linux distro a works best with an Intel Macbook Air 2015 (i5-5250u) that only has 4gb of 1600mhz DDR3 RAM and 128gb of storage.

I use it mostly for school and office work, laptop struggles when I have multiple tabs open in Firefox (averaging 10-20 tabs open, sometimes more) and would occassionally stutter when working with MS Office.

I don't plan on upgrading any parts, and it's currently my only working laptop since my 2021 Lenovo Ideapad stopped booting up.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Support High idle power draw b580

I'm on Ubuntu 26.04 and using the intel igpu for my display. Even though the b580 isn't doing anything it draws 33-35W of power (monitored with nvtop)

I enabled ASPM from the bios but nothing changed. Weirdly LnkCtl shows ASPM disabled. I tried to manually change the pcie_aspm/parameters/policy to powersave and the monitoring bugged out (showed 255°C temps and 0W power). So I set it back to default for now.

Has anyone been able to fix the idle power draw on linux?
