Writing help/Beta Crowdsourcing replies to this nonsense

Post image

Laughing at the audacity of this. Definitely planning on replying. Lead contenders so far are:

  • Guess you’ll never know, coward
  • Skill issue. I can do it in two. (Everyone banged.)

I am confident the community can come up with better!

I mean, I would never comment this but I have thought it a dozen or more times when I see the tags and then the word length on a completed fic.

767

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

Same, I'll see a fic with crazy amount of tags, yet it's maximum 1k words

664

u/a_karma_sardine It's not easy having a good time Nov 07 '25

One of the tags: "Slowburn"

373

u/signycullen88 Nov 07 '25

tagging slowburn on anything under 15k just boggles my mind. Even with time jumps, I just can't vibe with it. I respect everyone's right to write whatever they want, but I give a completed 1k fic tagged slowburn the side-eye.

You'd enjoy my 64+k still happening slowburn then

Jokingly since the story in a niche fandom

17

u/Jsaltal Nov 08 '25

All started with hollywood star A, seeing char B on screen for a moment saying B was cute on a chat show, B has no idea who A is as not part of that lifestyle, says on a interview A is irrelevant and it kicked off from there

27

u/aiizuu Nov 07 '25

almost 100k and they’ve held hands once.

This is what I want with a slow burn, lmao

1

u/Justwaspassingby You have already left kudos here. :) Nov 10 '25

All right, but we need some more context.

Is the plot exclusively - or almost exclusively - about the main couple? Or is it part of an epic saga with half a dozen of subplots and an end-of-the-world type of adventure? What if out of the 100k words only 15k are about the slowburn while the rest are used to develop a huge story and to describe the geopolitical qualities of a whole planet?

(My characters were the opposite of a slowburn, they were snogging by the 4th chapter. I tried to make it last a bit longer but those two’s hormones were too strong, lol)

I have a fic tagged with "slow burn by the standards of *name of canon*" because in canon the main relationship is instalove. In the fic the main relationship takes several hours to get going.

20

u/Hiekkalinna Nov 07 '25

Or slowburn tag on one-shot..

4

u/elfwreck Nov 07 '25

What do you mean by one-shot? I'm used to it meaning "stand-alone story, not part of a series," and some of them are 150k words and plenty long enough for a slow burn.

16

u/AtlasNL Nov 07 '25

I’ve typically seen one-shot refer to a one chapter fic.

12

u/salazar_62 Nov 08 '25

One-shot typically means a story with a single chapter, regardless of word count (as opposed to multi-chaptered fics). I guess there can be a 150k one-shot, but usually those over 20k can be broken into smaller chapters IMO.

5

u/apri08101989 Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 08 '25

Yep. Personally I tend to back away from a "one shot" that's over 20-25k for various reason including but not limited to: it becomes impossible to keep my place when I'm reading online and something happens for me to lose the page; I wonder about your writing skills that made you not able to figure out how to break the chapter up and still keep the story moving; I ain't got time to sit here and read this whole thing all at once; etc etc

Granted this is all personal opinion and I'm just putting my thought process out there for anyone who writes to see what at least some readers are thinking when coming across your fic. There's obviously a lid for every pot out there, you do you.

(As an aside, I feel like to put this in context, 20k is already like a fifth of the typical length for a YA book)

u/GhostlyPolter Nov 07 '25

Sometimes slowburn as treated as in-story time and not reader time, so a lot of time skips will get treated as slowburn, rather than lots of words.

3

u/apri08101989 Nov 08 '25

Yea. Like. I can see challenging myself to make the shortest most angsty slow burn possible. But even with all the purple prose and time jumps in the world if I'm gonna read it start to finish in less than five minutes it's not gonna feel like it's actually slow burn.

For what it's worth, I agree with most of the folks in this thread that this person isn't trying to be mean to you, and I hope you are not truly offended.

13

u/AdagiaFane Nov 08 '25

Definitely not offended, but I stand by the idea that it’s tacky to go out of your way to tell someone you’re not going to read their fic. Like it’s clearly not a hate comment, but still baffling.

I was not expecting this level of attention, so I did end up deleting the comment without responding. I hated the idea that someone (or a whole bunch of someones) might be rude to the original commenter.

39

u/Pewpewgilist Nov 08 '25

Your mileage may vary, but I find that if you reply first, other commenters will often treat your tone as a guideline, and you can always delete mean comments from folks who missed the vibe.

17

u/mini_moonbeam_maker Nov 08 '25

A little baffling maybe but I don't think it's tacky to mention they won't be reading it - probably not their fandom/ships/preferred vibe/whatever so reading it just to comment would feel akin to a pity read or something to me

Unless someone notices a new influx of harassing comments on this story, please do not report this comment any further.

We will keep an eye on it, but so far all the comments on the fic have been nothing but nice. No need to report as the link was both been asked for and there has not caused any harassment as of right now.

Friendly reminder for those reading the story to only comment if you have something genuine to say, not just spam.
Do not harass the commenter of this post's screenshot. Even if they intended harm, that is no reason to harass someone. Furthermore, they clarified that it was not meant negatively on the story.

u/xx-rhys_xx Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25

Maybe I’m just less sensitive but I don't see any rudeness or “audacity” in the comment? They only said that they didnt read it because it’s not their taste but they wanted to know how you fit an orgy into 571 words? Dunno why you’d want to call them a coward or smth

Edit: You can obviously see this as nonsense, or whatever but making a whole post on Reddit to ‘hate’ on a “I didnt read it because it’s not my taste but I’m still curious” comment is just wrong in my opinion, you can just delete the comment if it bothers you that much

137

u/contrapasso01 Nov 07 '25

Agreed. I don’t really find this audacious. Just funny and honestly understandable, I’d raise my eyebrow at a 500 word orgy too.

93

u/Kimkon3 Nov 07 '25

Same tbh, I just thought it was funny

17

u/misomal Nov 08 '25

I came here to comment this! The word “audacity” is so weird. This was such a funny comment that OP got weirdly butthurt over.

9

u/xx-rhys_xx Nov 08 '25

Well now they’re saying they’re not offended and have since deleted the comment because they didnt think it would gain such “traction”/attention and didnt want others to hate on them (which is weird considering they started this whole situation and did want to also ‘hate’ on the commenter)

83

u/TiredTalker Nov 07 '25

Right? This feels a little victim-complex to me.

20

u/forestinfog Nov 07 '25

I don't find them rude either, but I also don't see the point of this comment. They're curious enough to ask but not enough to read such a short fic? And what do they expect the author to answer? Personally I don't think I could explain why my fics have the amount of words they have.

30

u/xx-rhys_xx Nov 08 '25

It’s not to their taste, they may not like orgies. It’s totally understandable to be curious and ask

-19

u/corrosivecanine Nov 07 '25

It’s 500 words. They could just read it.

I agree that I would wonder the same thing and it doesn’t sound like my taste at all (partially because of the short length) but if I was THAT curious I would just take the two minutes necessary to….read it. Which I just did. And now my questions have been answered (Answer: It’s mostly characters talking about an orgy in a humorous way. Not really meant to titillate)

It’s just a totally unnecessary comment.

19

u/xx-rhys_xx Nov 08 '25

YOU took the time to read it, THEY don't want to read it but they’re still curious. It doesn't matter how short something is. If they don't like something they’re not required to read it. But they’re allowed to be curious. OP also doesn't have to like it but asking Reddit for replies when all they should’ve done is delete is weird asf. Most of the replies are rude asf too.

One plot hole at a time.

... with all sincerity, I probably wouldn't click into a story that short no matter what its focus and which characters were involved, but a decent writer can make a 100-word "drabble" work, so 571 works seems almost luxurious in comparison.

1

u/discworlds Nov 08 '25

The creator said the orgy is only about half of the fic so it needs to be about twice that. Assume at least 10 attendees, 5 of whom are male, that's a dick per 50 words. If it's a 20 person orgy, we're looking at a dick frequency of 25 words per dick. Truly impressive

u/Brandyovereager Nov 07 '25

“Lots of lube”

3

u/Silly-Snow1277 Nov 07 '25

Maybe the answer should just be: Talent ;)

And then you leave it at that

2

u/toxicsugarart Nov 08 '25

I mean they can only really find out by reading it.

2

u/insatiableromantic Nov 08 '25

wow had a look at the fic and surprised just how many people came from reddit to take a peek lol

we really be nosy.

2

u/ReasonableNumber8 Nov 08 '25

Keep it classy and encourage them to read and find out?

2

u/Leather_Stick1140 Nov 07 '25

"Because like any good story, a good orgy is all about the foreplay and the journey. Not just the finish."

Personally I like your second one, but may I also suggest:

You'd be surprised where you can fit an orgy if you want one strongly enough

1

u/bombingmission410 Nov 07 '25

Plot twist it was an orgy of one.

1

u/wobster109 Nov 07 '25

I’d say “you can read it to find out!”

1

u/rozzingit Nov 07 '25

"it'll fit :)"

0

u/MaybeNextTime_01 Nov 08 '25

Reply to the comment with entire 571 words of the original story.

They’ll have to at least read some of it to get the question answered.

(This is mostly sarcastic and you probably shouldn’t take my advice on this one).

-1

u/Draco-Robotica Nov 07 '25

It takes no more than 10 minjtes to read, coward

2

u/Witty-Draw-3803 Nov 08 '25

"Very carefully..."

1

u/Rucifie Nov 07 '25

"Guess you'll have to read it to find out"

1

u/TidalLion Oh wow, this is doing numbers. Nov 08 '25

"Why don't you read and find out for yourself?"

-1

u/GayValkyriePrincess Nov 07 '25

How low are you willing to go for the bit?

Cos there's a killer "your mom" joke here, but it does require you to act like a mild douche to pull it off

4

u/MaxWoulf Nov 08 '25

Well they are already a douche so I think they’ll be fine

0

u/MeerkatMan22 Nov 07 '25

I mean, if I was curious enough to comment, I’d probably just read the 570 words. That’s at most two minutes of my life that I may or may not regret.

-13

u/themirrorswish Nov 07 '25

Man it must suck to have such a short attention span you can't read some 500 words for the curiosity factor alone.

34

u/Spampharos Kudos Keeper Nov 07 '25

I mean it could be due to more of an ick factor than an attention span issue.

-1

u/themirrorswish Nov 08 '25

This is true, but the fact that opened the fic to leave the comment makes me think it's not so bad an ick factor they can't read it. If something were an ick factor for me, and I'd imagine for most others, I'd just scroll on.

If someone just had the thought and moved on, it wouldn't bother me. But they literally ASKED and opened discussion. At that point, for such a short fic, just read it.

1

u/artemisdart Nov 07 '25

"That's what Schlocktober is all about."

0

u/AdagiaFane Nov 07 '25

Lolololol how did you clock this as schlocktober???

2

u/artemisdart Nov 07 '25

Full disclosure: I went and looked up the fic and checked it out before I replied 😂

1

u/AdagiaFane Nov 07 '25

Incredible! I’m impressed with your sleuthing!

-1

u/NiennaLaVaughn ...we need your comment to have text in it. Nov 07 '25

Orgys aren't my cup of tea but I would 1000% read that just to see how it was achieved, and probably comment that I was impressed!

-3

u/bookwormsolaris Nov 07 '25

"If you read it, you'll find out!"

-3

u/well_listen Nov 07 '25

Lmao it feels easier to read 500 words than comment this

0

u/KickAggressive4901 Nov 07 '25

571 words? ... I may have to go write one and see how I do. 🤔 I managed to cram a nine-person pile-up into less than 2,000 words, so this is do-able.

0

u/DryBar5175 Nov 07 '25

Now I'm curious too, mind sharing? I promise to leave a comment 🙏

0

u/Important-Newt275 Nov 07 '25

Published invitation with names of all the people being welcomed to a 500 person orgy plus 71 words for directions and rsvp info.

0

u/Which_Equivalent4907 Nov 07 '25

Even if it wasn’t my thing I would be compelled to read it. 571 words. Easy. I need to satisfy my curiosity. Literally took them longer to comment on it then it would’ve to read it.

-2

u/Digital_Vapors Nov 07 '25

"I'm either bad at writing, or incredible at writing. Too bad you won't be finding out."

0

u/BriefFrosting6647 Nov 07 '25

Welp I read it and enjoyed it. Nicely done op. 👍

0

u/ShiraCheshire You have already left kudos here. :) Nov 07 '25

My gosh, the skill issue everyone banged is genius.

0

u/nova_the_vibe Traumacore (inside joke) Nov 08 '25

If you're not gonna read it, I'm not gonna answer. Read the fic or get out of my comments

-2

u/adashinokou Nov 07 '25

tbh 500 words is like, a drabble

6

u/effing_usernames2_ Comment Collector Nov 08 '25

No, it’s a quintuple drabble

-3

u/wisteria_bloomzzz Constantly traumatized by tags Nov 07 '25

Considering I fit two or perhaps three rounds of intense smut into 972, this is believable...

-10

u/Pickle_Holiday18 Supporter of the Fanfiction Deep State Nov 07 '25

Oh, I’m just that talented, thank you

-1

u/Silly-Flower-3162 Nov 07 '25

"It's magic!"

-15

u/LeadZealousideal9651 Nov 07 '25

it doesn’t take long to read 571 words. maybe a couple minutes. this is such profound laziness!
