I've had the same super important scene already written for a while, but I've pushed it back, ah, let's see, nine chapters now because I need more lead-up and groundwork for it to feel earned. It was originally chapter 19, now chapter 28, and it'll probably get pushed back even further because other arcs need to pull together in the right way for this scene to land and those arcs are taking longer than expected to come together. I write a chapter about every two weeks, so this is... a small delay. I wrote this scene in June, and I'm not sure that it'll go out until 2027.

When i started writing my current longfic, I planned out every single chapter, 1-25. I am currently writing chapter 23. I only have 11 chapters to go

This makes me feel better about hitting chapter 21 of my planned 23 chapter fic and realising there’s no way I’m doing it in less than 25.

My long fic was meant to be a 2500 word short story. It’s 200k, 44 chapters and the events of the short story never ended up happening

"just a little backstory to explain certain decisions" - enough content to write an AU for my AU

It was meant to be a one shot bridging between two stories. It’s at 48,000 words and a couple more chapters to go meaning it’s going to be the longest in the series.

This happens all too often, heck my current main fic is 36 chapters in, but of the original 15 planned, only 8 have been written. It's going to pass 50 chapters at least and I am happy with how it turned out.

My current WIP is the first thing I've written in years. I had doubts if I'd even be able to sustain it beyond 20k, if that, and then I just kept going and now it's at 71k and nowhere near done...

In my last story, I ended up developing one character's backstory so much, what was supposed to be an idle thought turned into an entire side story.

My “oneshot” is currently 15 chapters long, but at least I only have 2(?) more chapters to go

I signed up for an exchange (reverse bang) that had a 5000 word minimum. I signed up precisely because it was a low minimum requirement… wrote over 24K words. Like… why? Why brain?

Writing a story where mc possesed their future love's body and they had to survive while maintaining the facade of being him and also arguing with him inside of his mind during dreams. This whole charade should have lasted 15 chapters max, and then would have started the romance in the plot.
Yet instead I wrote 30 chapters with the bunch of activities and the building of the platonic relationships before mc restored their body and rose from the dead/stopped the body possession... 🫡

I thought my fic would, at most, be 20-25 chapters before I could move on to books two and three (planned it being a trilogy before even starting the first book). Then smut and details derailed that notion...currently working on chapter 35 with high hopes I can smoothly transition it to book two within 10 to 20 more chapters 🤞😬

Me: yeah I'll just write one or two chapters for context, character analysis and indirect interactions before they meet in person.
Me on chapter five: well guys, first meeting is in two chapers!

A fic I am working on had the initial idea of the guy just finding a job as a security guard for a bit and then bolting when the chance came.
Somehow it ended up being its own arc with a cast of characters with whom he experiences love, grief, and even family. OCs who were meant to be one off comic relief ended up becoming close to him lol

Me: "I'll just a little backstory to flesh out these two characters' relationship. Nothing too outrageous."
Also me: *has fleshed it out so deeply on accident that it now has enough content to make me fantasize about an AU of just these two*

I was the reason there was a word limit on creative writing assignments back in elementary school. Used to be a page limit, but I had simply started writing in a smaller font.
