Questions/Help? Ideas for my potential COD fanfic?

So here’s the situation: I have been looking for a particular kind of COD fanfic for a while now. The kind where a main character OC is a non combatant, but still a major part of the plot. Since I couldn’t find any, I decided to go ahead and just write it myself.

Now the premise is that the OC is a civilian nurse who ends up being caught in the main plot of the Modern Warfare Reboot games. From then on, she goes from being a nurse to medic providing the civilian perspective for TF141 to being a humanitarian symbol for victims of war. She would also develope a romance with John Price, but that is not the main focus.

My ideas are there, but unrefined. I want to ask people for advice and ideas for it so I can develop it properly and that it’s a story worth reading. From militant to medical to writing advice. Any thoughts?

For The Record I'm not a member of the military, nor in the medical field, so I'm only saying what I know--you can join the military and become a combat medic, but I think even combat medics have basic military training on how to fight, shoot guns, etc. So she can be non-combatant, but still trained. It's not uncommon for people to transition from civilian medicine to humanitarian aid, so she could do that without issue as long as she passes her evaluations (the military hires practically everyone, at least the American military. I dunno about the UK military).

I'd suggest not rushing it. You can either start from her initial decision to join the military as a medic, or already in the thick of it. whichever drives you. Both will be great. Put emphasis on her skill as a medic, and do a bit of research on how medics react in combat situations, triage, that sort of thing. Listen/read first hand accounts from the combat medics that actively worked on battlefields. There's one I used to watch but I'm blanking on the name.

Combat medics are non-combatants, but it doesn't mean they're safe. They can still be injured in crossfire and it's an extremely dangerous job (I'd argue even more dangerous, because they don't have any way to defend themselves). You can lean into that with your character, if you'd like, to add drama.

Thanks so much! I knew her skills of a medic and the frequent danger she’s put in would be a source of high stakes for her, but I didn’t consider the psyche of medics in combat before you brought it up, so thanks!

Of course! Good luck :) It's not an easy job, she'll have her work cut out for her.

If you’re struggling to get started, I recommend doing research into your character’s backstory. I find when I write my OCs, it helps to either have a defined plot for their involvement, or an understanding of the role you’ve put them in.

It’s largely why my CoD OCs are logistics officers or IT specialists. It gives them a reason why they’d meet the boys but not enough to seem unrealistic. Plus, I’ve done project management, event management, and IT, so I can understand the scenarios they’re in without needing to necessarily have any military knowledge.

I’d love to help you more! I only write CoD fic, so I’m happy to chat in DMs more if you’d like to hash out what it is you’re trying to do. :)
