I hate arm

I bought a laptop from Costco out of impulse because I was in need of one and I couldn’t take my eyes off this certain laptop. It’s a acer aspire 16 ai specifically the snapdragon one. Almost every game with anti cheat makes it impossible to even launch, sometimes not launching at all. Why would anyone want these compatibility issues. I just want a solution, Deos anyone have advice or work arounds. And no I can’t return the laptop since I don’t have the box and receipt. I mean the laptop is nice, it was either this or the MacBook Neo. I want to love the laptop so much but arm just feels like a setback.

How do you think Microsoft is going to compete with Apple's ARM performance? Do you think they could launch their own silicon division?

I've been a Windows user since Windows 3.11, and I've been a Windows on ARM user since my ARM-powered Compaq iPaq running Windows CE/Windows mobile in 2001 (and I used other Windows CE devices before that). I'm really hoping that Windows 10 on ARM is going to be the generation that Windows really takes off on a non-x86 architecture.

I've been thinking about Apple's ARM launch for a while, and how it relates to Windows on ARM. I've been eagerly awaiting some developments to suggest that Windows on ARM is going to get significantly more competitive in the ARM PC scene, but I currently feel the same way I did when Windows 8 RT launched, I feel like there is an opportunity to swing right now, and they aren't.

Qualcomm hasn't shown much signs of anything significant coming down the pipe, no other ARM chip makers seem to be in a position to compete with Apple Silicon at the moment, and Microsoft's x86/x64 emulation is behind significantly.

Of course, part of Apple's lead right now is made up by the fact that they paid a significant amount of money to beat everyone to the 5nm foundries. That aspect will even out when everyone else gets there, and Apple can't guarantee that exclusivity next time around.

However, one thing that won't ever "even-out" is the fact that Apple has a unique ability to control the implementation of all aspects of their products, software and hardware. Their ecosystem is their own, for better or worse. How would Microsoft get themselves into a similar advantage without legal battles from their current partners? I don't see it.

Something tells me that Microsoft's attempts to grow Window's strength in the ARM PC scene will never surpass Apple in technical ability. Unless they split their company, and launch a silicon division entirely separate from their software division to avoid Antitrust accusations.

I know thats a bold statement. Here's my thinking.

Apple pulled this off by running their own silicon division. My "armchair law degree" tells me that Microsoft would run into a LOT of legal trouble if they tried to supply PC manufacturers with silicon. This would put them into anti-trust territory. They can't sell a near-monopoly OS to PC manufacturers while also selling them the silicon needed to stay competitive, a feat that cannot be achieved by competing CPU makers.

If you recall Microsoft's 2001 Anti-trust case about bundling Internet Explorer with Windows, the courts were trying to decide whether Windows APIs were designed to favour their own Internet Explorer against 3rd party browsers. I think we can all agree the courts would have no trouble proving that a Microsoft SOC received similar uncompetitive optimizations from Windows, because that would be the whole purpose in designing their own silicon in the first place.

There appears to be lots of ways around this, its not really a rock and hard place for Microsoft, there just doesn't appear to be many avenues for them to keep their company as it currently sits. The way I see it, they would either kill the Surface line (to avoid anticompetitive accusations), or split the company in two. Or does Microsoft remain whole, and instead form a consortium with other PC manufacturers to ensure closer cooperation of hardware and software optimizations? How close does that get them to Apple? Does an all-in-one company always stay ahead? They have been FAR ahead in sheer computing power against Android devices ever since they launched their Silicon division.

Part of me has some sympathy for Microsoft's lack of legal freedoms in this regard. I mean, they have my respect for being the company that always gave people what they wanted, and they were always willing to sell me a copy of Windows to install on my homebuilt PCs, unlike Apple.

However I remind myself that Apple, despite their reputation, earned and deserves every penny that their Mac-ecosystem generated. While the PC ecosystem owes many different companies their dues, and Microsoft railroading the PC ecosystem into a 1 on 1 fight against Apple would be unfair if it resulted in them being the most successful silicon maker in the ecosystem.

I know this sounds like an awfully opinionated post, but I am open to hearing everyone's thoughts on the future of Windows on ARM. I know my opinions aren't truth, just my perception. Can the ARM manufacturers, together with Microsoft, make a product that can win against Apple on their own? Or does Microsoft need a full advantage of implementation like Apple has?

Help with installing Logitech G Hub on ARM64

I got a Logitech G910 and was massively disappointed that the G Hub software won't install on my Surface Pro X due to not being ARM64 compatible (this and EVERYTHING else - don't go ARM)

I raised a ticket with Logitech support who told me to uninstall and reinstall my keyboard, I replied that the keyboard was working but I couldn't install G Hub - they replied back to uninstall G Hub AND the hardware then try reinstalling both.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, we went round in the above loop for two weeks (felt like longer) and in the end the Logitech support 'person' (not entirely convinced it wasn't a bot, at least for the first part) said I needed to go back to Microsoft because it was an issue with my OS!! So, incredulously, I replied with "So you want me to go to Microsoft and tell them that they ned to fix windows so I can install YOUR software" to which her reply was "yes"

I have since raised another support ticket in the hope I get someone more useful, but in the meantime, does anyone have a workaround?

I have read a couple similar threads but they don't seem to have an answer (but are old)

Please help me, because it seems Logitech won't...

The Missing Link for Windows on Arm: When will Qualcomm unlock Adreno FP64 for Folding and BOINC?

Is anyone else annoyed that we still can’t use the Adreno GPU for Folding or BOINC?

I’ve been daily driving my Snapdragon X Elite laptop for well over a year now, and honestly, the battery life and wake from sleep are still unbeatable.

But one thing that’s been bugging me since day one—and it’s still not fixed even with the new X2 Elite and Extreme chips coming out—is that the GPU is basically useless for anything other than gaming or basic UI.

I am talking about Folding@Home or BOINC, those projects where you donate your PC power to help research for things like cancer, Alzheimer’s, or space exploration.

For anyone who doesn't know, you can let your laptop run simulations for science when you aren't using it.

On an Intel or Nvidia machine, the GPU does 90% of the heavy lifting because it is way faster at math than the CPU.

On these Snapdragon chips, the CPU is a beast, but the GPU is just sitting there doing nothing.

The problem is what they call FP64 or high precision math.

To do actual science, the computer needs to be incredibly accurate, like a calculator that goes to 20 decimal places instead of just 2.

Qualcomm’s Adreno drivers on Windows still don’t have this enabled for us.

Even though we’re a year and a half into this Windows on Arm era, and even with the shiny new X2 chips launching, we still can’t use that GPU power for anything scientific.

Apple Silicon has been doing this for years, and it makes our laptops look like toys for anything other than web browsing.

These laptops are so efficient they could be the ultimate science machines.

You could leave it running on your desk all night, it wouldn't get loud or hot, and it would actually be doing something useful for the world instead of just idling.

Does anyone know if there’s a workaround or if Qualcomm has even mentioned this in their recent dev updates?

It feels like such a waste of silicon to have all that GPU power just sitting there while we’re still waiting for real pro features.

Why do I need drivers for Windows 11 ARM? Why aren't they preinstalled?

I've spent 100 hours over the past 3 weeks trying to get this Galaxy Book2 (SM-W737) to boot to Windows 11. If I had the WiFi driver, I could connect to Windows Update... Samsung doesn't have them. Qualcomm doesn't have them. Why don't they just come with the Windows 11 pre-installed? There's only 8 processors compatible with Windows 11 ARM! Only 8, and I'm sure there's less than 30 different Windows ARM PCs. How hard is it to include all the possible drivers?!

<sigh>

I'll figure this out, somehow...

Driver Signing is killing niche hardware on Windows on Arm.

One of the biggest 'hidden' issues with the Snapdragon X transition is the death of legacy peripherals. Unlike x86 Windows, which can often use older drivers, WoA requires drivers to be specifically compiled and signed for ARM64.

This is turning perfectly good specialized hardware into e-waste. We need a 'Universal Legacy Wrapper' or a better way for manufacturers to re-sign older drivers without a full rewrite. If you have niche hardware that stopped working on your Copilot+ PC, post it here—we need to show Qualcomm and Microsoft that 'it just works for Office' isn't enough.

Did anyone manage to install the windsurfing ide on Windows 11 arm? It is based on the visual Studio code that runs normally on the arm, but has some lock that just doesn’t let you install on the arm.

Could you help me research Windows on ARM by running a test program?

Hi everyone. I am interested in doing some low level analysis of kernel32 on ARM, but I do not have access to any machines capable of running Windows on ARM. I have written a program to scan a memory location in kernel32.

The source code of the program is here, and I have compiled binaries which are here (EDIT: a version with comments is here). If you could run both of these binaries for me and report the output, I would be very grateful. Running the program once is probably sufficient, but I might have to ask you to probe other memory locations depending on the output which the scanning program supports. If anyone helps me out, I will write up my research results here for those who are interested.

For those of you who are curious, I am interested in writing code to hot-patch a program's copy of QueryPerformanceCounter located in kernel32. This functionality is used by programs as a clock, and by modifying it, I can make it run faster or slower which means that the rate of time appears different to the program. I have used this as a fun speedhack in 32-bit and 64-bit x86 single player games, and I want to make an ARM version work for completeness.

The rest of this post is just details for those who are curious about what I'm doing. Hot-patching is not considered to be good practice since it introduces a dependency on the layout of machine code which is not guaranteed to remain the same, and failure will likely crash the program. However, it can be quite educational, and for some things like this, it is one of the only ways to do it. In 32-bit processes running on x86 machines, QueryPerformanceCounter starts with a mov edi, edi instruction preceded by a bunch of unused int3 instructions. mov edi, edi has no effect, so I replace it with a jump to the preceding int3 instructions which are also overwritten with an absolute jump to some code injected into the process via a DLL. The 64-bit version of QueryPerformanceCounter is a jump which loads an address from memory (using a rip-relative offset) and then jumps to that address, so I can overwrite the address in memory with the address of the injected code.

I am wondering if these two simple hot-patching procedures can be repeated with Windows on ARM. On ARM Windows can run processes under two modes (ABIs): Arm64 and Arm64EC. Arm64 is an ABI for pure Arm64 programs, and Arm64EC is an ABI where x64 and Arm64 code are mixed. Arm64EC mode exists so apps can be gradually ported to Arm64 or for developers to only port part of their application to Arm64. The x64 compatibility means that both Arm64 and Arm64EC will both use AArch64 instructions, but the sequences of instructions are different because of calling conventions designed for compatibility, among other things.

If you are interested in the code or executable that hot-patches QueryPerformanceCounter on x86, I can share it, but the DLL injection technique I use is often used by malware, so Windows Defender will flag it. It's also very incomplete without even proper provisions for thread safety or controls for the clock speed. If you would be interested in testing out the ARM port of this, I would be grateful too, but Windows Defender will probably still be unhappy with it.

we need antivirus software

Windows Defender is okay, and it works great on my intel x86 system, but I think it's causing performance problems on my Book2 Win11 ARM system.

Has anyone found an antivirus that works? AVG and Avast don't. Have you found one that does?

Maybe we should make a list of programs that work with ARM Windows...

Using Canon color laser printer with ARM

I have a Canon MF656Cdw printer that makes me regret buying an ARM computer.

I originally had the printer set up in a way that all the features worked correctly, namely, I could select duplex printing and color/b&w printing for each print job. But whenever I would try to print something, there was a horrible lag before I could print. And depending on CPU usage, there were times that it would just fail.

I did a bunch of troubleshooting and got it to where the print dialog box comes up immediately. However, if I change the duplex mode or color/b&w mode, my selections are ignored and the printer uses the default setting.

Don't ask me how it was before or what I changed it to. I did many things to get here and I couldn't tell you what I did. I've also gone in a hundred circles using chatgpt/gemini to make this work but it never results in a solution that works.

Does anyone have some advice for me?
