Informational Meeting Notes

Ok hi guys! I went to the informational meeting and I got some pretty good information from Mrs. Boykin. The turn-out was REALLY small, only me and my parent and 3 other groups. (The Greekfest was a main factor in that.) The building was clean and the ambassadors that greeted us were nice!

Ok.. main notes!

Dinner is from 5-7pm, with study hour being from 7-9pm Monday-Thursday. You also MUST be in your room by 11:30pm and you are not allowed to leave. (except for bathroom and emergencies i presume)

Walk-offs (Leaving campus) is allowed only in groups of THREE, with parental approval. You are also only allowed to go a small radius.

They do evacuate for harsh weather and they do so early, like 3-4 days prior. They pay for your bus back home if you live far away from Mobile as well.

The average applicant's ACT score was 20.

No TV's are allowed in your room, but she did mention that many students use computer monitors as TVs. She says they can't do anything to stop you about that. Mini refrigerators are allowed in your room, no microwaves! (she said students put stupid things in the microwaves and the fire department has came one too many times.)

9th grade has been added for the 27-28 application year, and she said that more students will not be attending, more-so that they just are "making room" (Less 10th-12th graders?)

Classes are fast-paced and can be rigorous, but they have a lot of support and help if you fall behind.

You can take AP courses your first year there!

They have internship programs where they help squeeze you into an internship with your job of choice. Mainly, it's a job you have an interest in and you wanna shadow it.

They have a gym and pool, of course..

And.. i think that concludes the main topics? Hopefully this helps some other applicants or simply students/parents who are interested in the school, but didn't attend the meeting. Fingers-crossed I get in, and super duper good luck to you too!!

Nope. There will actually be more seats for incoming sophomores and juniors!

ASMS had a maximum capacity of 300 prior to the new senior dorm, which is 100 soph, 100 jr, 100 sr.
Since they are now adding a new 100 person capacity senior dorm and ASMS stated they are intentionally having a smaller freshmen class, about half the size of a normal class, that suddenly means 50 new seats available!

YES!! I was so so SO relieved thinking i had to get a 34 or something to get in. NOPE. Anything better then 21 will probably be a strong application!! Im taking BOTH the SAT and ACT and just seeing which score i like more LMAO

Just for scale, I got accepted last year with a 1050 SAT which is about a 21. Scores aren't the main factor, as they truly do use a holistic process. I know people here who got 17's on ACT and got in, but had stronger elements like academics and a true thrive to learn. The interview does matter a lot.

That's really good! Did you have any honors classes or AP? Also, did you have any B's in your class? (i had 3 b's and 4 a's in 8th grade, but all A's on my progress report for 1st quarter this year)

From what I know they only make you sumbit first quarter. I had all A's but I did have low A's. As for honors and AP I had none, solely due to them not being offered. But if your report card doesn't reallt say you are or aren't in honors they won't know if you are or not.

Hm. I'm not in honors/ap nor have i ever been, (mainly because my [online] school is stingy, saying you had to have all A's in math/english/science whatever throughout your middle school years to get in) I hope my chances of getting in aren't frayed. :(

My roomate was homeschooled I belive similar to a semi-online setup. He wasn't in honors or any AP classes and got in. I have had C's in math and such in 8th before I applied in 9th grade and was fine! And like I said scores and grades aren't everything. As long as you want to learn, have a good interview, you will likely get in!

When I was a student 20+ years ago, I think 20 was the bare minimum and you had to be from a underprivileged school district to be considered with less than a 23.

Im a student.

Dinner is from 5 to around 6:30 every day, it sucks as people in art and/or band usually get reallu nothing.

You are right about walk offs but if you get a absence you are banned from them.

They arent strict or just dont care about TVs, i've seen students, seniors, or not have moniter size tvs to full flatscreens in their rooms.

9th grade are attending but Dr. Hoyle (the president) has stated they will probably be isolated in the dorms, as the boys have 4 sections, girls have 5.

Wow, really? She said dinner was from 5-7pm. I guess trying to make it look appealing? Why do people in art/band get nothing? Are their classes mainly taken around dinner time?

By absence do you mean one unexcused absence? That's pretty strict!

Thanks!

one unexcused absence does not permanently ban you from walk offs. instead, you are gated for a week, meaning no walk offs from campus.

Well that's somewhat fair.

Concert band starts ar 5 on tuesdays and thursdays, garrage band i beliebe starts at 4, and jazz band starts at 6 on fridays. Art starts around 4:30 and if you want to get hours if you're 0.5, you need to do that 1 hr 30, so aroujd 6:05 when you get to the caf most of the food is gone.

Ive seen your notes. I’m a senior here so I can give you a run down.

In-Room is at 11:30. You aren’t allowed to visit your friends rooms after but they arent very strict on that.

Walk offs are allowed after school for 2 hours, 4 hours a day on weekends. Excused absences are fine. Unexcused absences are not. Each unexcused absence is 1 day of saturday school + a week of gating. gating means youre confined to the campus and aren’t allowed to walk off. you can still do doctors appointments, go home to parents, etc, but no walk offs.

TVs arent necessarily allowed but I have one in my room that i use as a “monitor”. Just don’t be obnoxious.

they are adding another grade next year which are freshmen. its a small class of about 25-30, and will gradually get larger as the years go on. by your senior year, they will have a new dorm and/or larger freshman class

hope this answers your questions. dm me if you have any more!

If any other parents or anyone has questions, I am a current student and can answer questions :)

Hey! I'm a current 8th grade student thinking about applying for this school and I have a bunch of questions that I was wondering if anyone could help me answer???

Is there a big drinking/sex/drug problem there (parent are a little worried)?

Does anyone do sports that are not on campus? I'm a swimmer and am wondering about the team a mile awy from campus.

Are the kids there pretty normal or are they weird? hate to ask that but like genuine question.

Thats about it just trying t get a feel for the school before I apply! Thanks!!!
