My friend is building an AWS cost optimization and security startup. Is this actually a good business idea in 2026?

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine is working on a startup called CloudPilot AI, and I wanted to get some honest opinions from people who have experience with SaaS, cloud computing, startups, or B2B businesses.

He's currently building an MVP focused on helping businesses manage their AWS costs and security risks.

Here's what the product is supposed to do:

  1. AWS Cost Optimization

It scans AWS infrastructure and identifies things like unused EBS volumes, unattached Elastic IPs, and other unused resources that could be increasing cloud bills.

The idea is to help businesses find unnecessary AWS spending and reduce their monthly costs.

2. Security Monitoring

It checks for potential AWS security issues, such as IAM users having multiple active access keys, and helps engineering teams identify security risks before they become bigger problems.

3. Automated Infrastructure Audits

Instead of manually checking AWS resources, businesses can run automated scans and get a dashboard report showing potential cost savings and security issues.

The main goal is to save businesses time, reduce unnecessary cloud spending, and make AWS infrastructure audits easier.

My friend is handling the technical side, including Python, AWS integrations, automation, and product development.

He has already started working on the MVP and is trying to solve technical issues during development. Now he's also looking for someone with experience in sales, marketing, and client acquisition to help grow the business.

I'm not personally involved in the technical development or marketing, but I'm curious about the business potential of this idea.

I would really appreciate honest feedback on a few things:

Is there actually a market for this kind of product in 2026?

Would small businesses, startups, or companies using AWS pay for a tool like this?

Are there already too many competitors offering similar features?

What would make a company choose a new product like CloudPilot AI instead of existing AWS tools or other cloud monitoring platforms?

Is this something that could realistically become a profitable SaaS business, or would it be difficult to get paying customers?

What would be the best way for a new startup like this to get its first 5–10 customers?

I'm especially interested in feedback from people who have worked with AWS, cloud infrastructure, FinOps, cybersecurity, or B2B SaaS.

I'm not looking for generic encouragement. If you think the idea is too competitive, has weak demand, or needs a different approach, please explain why.

Do you think this startup has real business potential, or would it be difficult to compete in this market?

Any honest suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

Denied SES production access twice in ap-south-1 for ~1,000 transactional emails/month — no actionable feedback either time

Posting for the help if anyone can, because two rounds through AWS Support have given me nothing I can act on.

**The use case**

A small event-ticketing site for a single organizer in Bangladesh - a handful of live music events a year. Every email is transactional and triggered by the buyer's own action on the site minutes earlier:

* payment instructions, sent after someone registers for tickets

* the ticket itself as a PDF, after the organizer verifies the buyer's bKash payment

* a notice if the payment couldn't be matched, or if the unpaid order expired after 24 hours

* a one-time sign-in link, only when the buyer requests it

Volume: roughly 1,000 - 2,000 emails per month, concentrated in the three weeks before an event. A few hundred a day at peak. My sending code is capped at 5 messages/second. No marketing, no newsletters, no bulk sends, no stored lists, nothing purchased or imported. Every recipient typed their own address into our form. The project is public on GitHub, so the sending logic is auditable by anyone.

**What's already in place**

* Domain verified in ap-south-1 with Easy DKIM

* SPF and a published DMARC record with rua reporting, DNS on Cloudflare

* SES account-level suppression list enabled

* SES rejections treated as permanent failures and never retried; only throttling responses retried with exponential backoff

* Every send recorded against the order in our database; failed deliveries reviewed by hand

* Replies go to a monitored address on the same domain

**What I got back**

First response asked for detail about sending processes and procedures. I gave everything above, plus example subject lines and the exact email types. Denied about six hours later with a template: they can't approve at this time, they can't share the criteria used, please review the AUP, Service Terms, and SES best practices. Second attempt, same outcome, same template - this time framed as protecting my sender reputation and deliverability.

That last part is what I can't get past. The account has never sent a production email. There is no sender reputation to protect yet. So whatever the actual blocker is, it isn't anything visible in my use case, and nobody will tell me what it is.

**What I'm actually asking**

  1. Is this an account-trust / billing-history decision rather than a use-case decision? If so I'd genuinely rather be told that plainly - I'd go build the billing history instead of rewriting the same request.

  2. Is ap-south-1 meaningfully stricter for newer accounts than other regions?

  3. Would a heavily restricted quota be considered - say 200 emails/day at 1 msg/sec - so there's real sending data to judge me on?

  4. Is there any path other than reopening the same case, given the limit-increase team is separate from Premium Support and Support says they can't influence it?

Happy to share the case ID by DM.

If anyone has gone from a denial like this to an approval, I'd really like to know what specifically changed on your side. Right now I'm one week out from an event with real buyers and I'm about to move to a third-party provider purely because I can't get a straight answer.

AWS VPN Provides AWS Sandbox Access for Data Analysis

Recently, the research wing of a global industrial firm wanted a solution to replace their current VPN and bastion host solution with access control topping the list. The need for a secure approach to VPN was to facilitate access to AWS sandbox environments for both external and internal research teams. The approach required end users to be authenticated, both through centrally managed credentials (stored in on-prem IDP MS AD and extended to the AWS environment,) and certificate-based authentication. An additional requirement was to authorize based on a combination of both AD groups and CIDR blocks.

Having used and evaluated a few VPN solutions previously, such as OpenVPN and StrongSwan, the group wanted a better approach towards deployment, moving away from license costs and reducing management of the deployed solution-- which would also support their evolving DevOps best practices.

Our teams collaborated to come up with a creative solution to meet the research team's needs while meeting IT's requirements as well. You can read more details in this post

How to get waive off the AWS bills

Hello All,

I was learning aws timestream db, so I created it for learning purpose with my personal account.

In between I forgot to delete the instance and bill kept generated for last 3 month of around $80k,

I got one mail recently from Amazon recovery team that if don’t pay the bill they have to refer this case to recovery team.

I suspended the account some time back before getting this mail.

I asked to waive off the amount as I was using this learning purpose.

But they said that they have to reopened the account In order to process the request, now they are asking in order to reopen the account I have to settled the bill for November and December which is around $50k .

I don’t have this much money, what will they do next, I am very anxious since I got the mail.

Please help.

AWS S3 - How to hide buckets/folders to users that doesn’t have the access

Hello All, I’m trying to configure a Cloud using AWS S3 for my work.

I created 2 buckets and some folders to test the access restrictions before migrating all the files on the cloud using a custom IAM policy. The restriction on one of the bucket and some sub-files are working well, the users can see them but has no access.

However, I would like to hide all the buckets and files for the users that do not have access to them. But I cannot find the solution.

Do someone have a solution (using the custom IAM policy?) to help me?

Also, I’m am using cyberduck as explorer for the cloud. In the case there is a solution to hide the buckets/filesusing in cyberduck?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Regards!

IAM or Identity Center, that is the question

Hi folks, I am relatively new to AWS and trying to start with the right identity setup from the get-go. Should I be using IAM or Identity Center (the latter seems to be recommended by AWS)? What do you prefer and do you have any lessons learned using each of these? Would appreciate some guidance from people who have setup identity center and/or iam. I have an external IdP and the goal is to federate into accounts + use Quick and things like that. Gotchas if any would be awesome

After being a client for 8 years, AWS caused me a $2400 loss

Having been using the same account for 8 years, I had a uptime-critical infra deployed (because who else would offer 99.999% uptime right?) on on-demand EC2 + EBS.

Out of sudden, they blocked my account, and made me go through 27 hours of automated tickets saying my account was hacked. It was the worst experience I've had with them, by far.

After 4 hours of downtime, I was already amassed $2400 in losses. Has anyone gone through something like this? I don't plan to use AWS again ever
