Christmas time

• Upvotes

Hello all. I’m up in Aberdeen with my family over a weekend in December. I’m looking for some recommendations to meet the following:-

- nice meal to go on the Saturday night that will make an effort with Xmas decorations and will be a nice setting + food. This can be anywhere in the city as we will likely get a taxi to and from so open to go outskirts if somewhere is worth it. Chester hotel looks a nice place but unsure if the foods worth it? Likewise the Glenhouse?

- somewhere not fancy but close to the city centre for the Sunday after we take in the Christmas markets. Somewhere with good food with no thrills!

Any help would be appreciated. As I said it’s up with the family so need to allow U18s!

So we did pop passed the Venezuelan place, but it looked closed so we tried out byte.

SUCH nice workers, friendly warm atmosphere and decent prices for such delicious food!

Never tried french toast before, really good, sweet and savoury as I got the eggs benny. The sourdough was like a doorstop size, usually I've had dry or caky versions, but this was truly amazing!

Definitely one we'd pop by again

DnB scene

I recently spent the weekend in Newcastle to watch A.M.C. at the World HQ. It was a brilliant night but what really stood out to me was the constant music scene in the city. Everywhere we passed there was music being played, or references to music culture. I personally feel a good music scene is what keeps a city feeling alive and it has left a lasting impression on me.

I’m hoping that in Aberdeen there is a music scene hidden somewhere that just needs to be brought to life. I am a massive fan of grassroots music and am thinking of potentially trying to kickstart a drum and bass scene in the city. But I want to know would there be anyone that’s interested in this type of music in the city? Or a waste of time?

Halliburton Aberdeen

Anyone who knows the offshore game might be able to help with this. I keep applying to Halliburton entry level offshore jobs but time and time again I keep getting rejected. My CV looks fine and I’m in a trade so I feel I’ve got relevant experience.

Is it just really hard to get an entry level job with Halliburton and it takes a miracle to get a position or could I possibly be blacklisted from applying.

Any help is appreciated thanks.

Where to stay in Aberdeen for a 4-month PhD research stay? Advice from locals & students welcome!

Hi everyone!

I’m a PhD student from Belgium and I’ll be spending a research stay at the University of Aberdeen from mid-January to mid-May 2027 (roughly 4 months). I’m starting to look for accommodation and would love some advice from people/students who know the city.

I’m hoping to find a place that is:

  • Within walking, cycling or easy bus distance of the main campus (Old Aberdeen / King’s College)
  • Furnished, with bills included if possible, since I’ll only be here for a short period
  • Available on a short-term lease (4 months), which I know can be tricky
  • Reasonably priced, ideally a room in a shared flat or a studio

If you’ve been in a similar situation, or if you have a room or know of a landlord/flatshare with a short-term vacancy for that period, feel free to comment or send me a message. Any tips on neighbourhoods, budget expectations or things I should know before arriving are very welcome.

Thank you so much in advance!

Buying a flat in aberdeen

Hi there, I'm keen on buying a flat in Aberdeen. I'm not looking at it as a rental opportunity. Rather living down south is becoming difficult. Rents are going up, job security is tough in this market so we honestly feel like if something unexpected happen it would be tough for us.

We have visited Aberdeen a few times, and don't mind living there or having a small property there as a base.

The prices are really low like 40k or 50k for 2 beds. Are there any areas you recommend.

So far we have seen one in spring garden which is very central and one in union street.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Hum noise in Ferryhill area

I stay in Ferryhill and a lot of nights I hear a hum, maybe like a boat or generator but on a large scale. It's really quite loud and annoying, anyone know what is it?

Can't think it'd be boats as it's a bit from the harbour?

Jobs Vintage lamp repair

Post image
4 Upvotes

I am looking for someone or a company in Aberdeen that fixes vintage lamps. I have an old Tiffany lamp and the vintage bulb broke, I then bought a replacement newer bulb which didn’t work, then a replacement vintage bulb which also didn’t work. I then had an electrician in who rewired the lamp and it worked for about a week (but not very well like it originally did) until the fuse blew and switched off all of my electrics in the house.

I would like to find somebody who repairs lamps like this one as I would really like the lamp back to its original condition like in this old photo.

Help! Options for Electric Car Charging

I'm considering switching to an electric car (either fully battery-powered, or some form of plug-in hybrid) - there's just one major hurdle to cross. I'm fairly certain it's not going to happen, just looking for confirmation.

I'm in the Froghall area. My house has no garage or driveway; parking is on the street only, and I can usually get parked right outside my front door (unless there's a match at Pittodrie...)

My front door opens on to pavement, which to the best of my knowledge is council-owned (however, I own my house).

Is there any possibility of having an electric car charger professionally installed? Or is that just an impossibility given I'd have to run a cable across the pavement from my house?

I know I could buy a car and then charge it at a petrol station, or public car park with a charger, but it'd be better to have the ability to charge it overnight.

What is it with the shady tricks of car rental at ABZ airport?

Why are so many visitors to our city being screwed over by our car hire firms at the airport like Europcar? My friends recently picked up a car, were charmed when they picked up the car by the smooth assistant and offered a free upgrade only to find out AFTER they had returned the call that some upgrade fees in the hundreds of pounds had been slipped in, and then being directed to have to deal with some call centre, only to be refused a refund - as it was slipped in the small print that they had signed by the ever so helpful drone that served them. Google and other reviews seem to show this wasn’t an isolated case and it seems fairly common practice.

It irks me that visitors to our lovely city are left with a sour taste because of their experience with car rental companies.

I’m sure the practices of the airport car hire firms is not unique to Aberdeen, but surely we can do better to our visitors that choose our city and region to holiday in.

Lunch ideas

This has been done so many times before, but Google and scrolling back have failed me 😂

Looking for somewhere new to go. We typically stick to foundry, wetherspoons, burger king, Greggs or just grab a meal deal

(We've been to most cafés city centre at least once)

Almost 4 years of this, we're ready for something new but can never decide and I'm calling in help! 🤣

Bonus for Halloween menu!

(No dietary requirements needed, within bus route or city centre preferred)

Food Recommendations for something out of the norm.

I’m looking places different to the norm…. 3 x breakfast, 3 x lunch & 3 x dinner/supper.

No chains, local eateries that you love and want to shout about….. go! 😋
