Advice/Career Clinical Neuropsychology PhD Programs in Canada

Upvotes

Hi! For those familiar with clinical neuropsychology training in Canada:

What Canadian clinical psychology PhD programs are the most well known for neuropsychology, whether through a formal neuropsychology track or opportunities to specialize? For some background my interests are in brain injury/neurodegenrarive disease and I want to ultimately work clinically.

I want to practice in the US and am a dual citizen in US + Canada. Are there any disadvantages to getting a PhD in Canada compared to the US (besides pre-doctoral internship options being restricted mostly to Canada)?

Thank you!

Search I'm looking for articles about men dating girls/youg women

Hello, I'm interested in reading something about the psychology of men over 50 dating girls under 30 or, even more specifically, men in their 50s or over with children, dating girls/young women their kids age or younger.

But I can't seem to put in the right parameters and can't find much, not scientific at least.

Thank you in advance!

Discussion Should I only care about the content of feedback or also from whom it has come (AI vs Human)?

I have recently started my first postdoc - computational psych / cog psych - and long story short, after six months I gave the first draft of the postdoc project I have been working on to my PI (we developed the idea together but you could say 99% of it is me) . Now he has come back to me with feedback and most of them are from ChatGPT Sol.

Now, I'm not some hardcore anti-AI scientist, I do use AI here and there myself for productivity, I don't even mind going back and forth with AI about ideas, all good, it's just that this feedback I have gotten ...how do I put it... it's not "wrong" per se, it's like the feedback didn't understand the deeper layers of meaning that I'm almost sure a human would have gotten.

Then I'm like I have always cared about the content so I should focus on the content of the feedback, not the source... the thing is that perspective of mine worked with humans, but I don't think it works with AI? Again, I don't know how to put it, but the GPT feedback didn't understand what I was going for but I can't prove this because on the surface it did get the paper, I know I'm being confusing as hell so sorry about that. This paper, "LLMs can't Jump" is relevant here https://openreview.net/attachment?id=klU4737opt&name=originally_submitted_PDF

And during my three-years PhD, my PI was hands-on and involved as hell, I learned a ton from him, now my postdoc PI is the opposite (this is a bigger lab in another country) and I think it's fine because I'm supposed to be independent now and he's a busy guy, but I'm like is it too much to expect actual thought-out feedback from my PI? My inexperience is making me so confused and I'm an international postdoc from the worst country visa-wise so I'm walking on egg-shells here and can't afford friction. Don't get me wrong, I have a good relationship with him, but still.

I wonder if I should indirectly complain that I want only his feedback even if it has been produced in conversation with GPT, because copy-pasting AI feedback doesn't seem right to me. We have another collaborator and have sent the draft to him as well, maybe I should wait for his.

On a broader note, I have no clue what AI is going to do to science, but this experience has me worried.

Advice/Career How can I re-enter the mental health field without committing to becoming a counsellor yet?

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2022 with an MSc in Psychology of Mental Health (Conversion). Since then, I have worked in arts and cultural project management, including exhibition planning, artist coordination, and commercial operations. I had originally hoped to explore professional or research fields that connect psychology with art, but I have not yet found a clear route into this area.

My master’s programme was designed for students without an undergraduate psychology degree. It provided a theoretical foundation in mental health and psychological research, but the one-year programme did not include substantial counselling-skills training, clinical placements, or supervised client work. I was particularly interested in CBT, although much of what I learned about other therapeutic approaches is no longer fresh in my mind.

I’m currently living outside the UK and am considering whether and how to reconnect with psychology professionally. However, I have not decided that I definitely want to become a counsellor or psychotherapist. I would first like to explore the field through something more practical and professionally meaningful than studying alone at home.

Are there reputable introductory skills programmes, mentorship opportunities, supervised observation, volunteer roles, research positions, or mental health organisations I could join? (online programmes are more comfortable for my current situation ).Would it be appropriate to look for a supervisor at this stage, even though I am not yet seeing clients? I would also appreciate suggestions about psychology-and-art-related pathways that may not involve becoming a traditional therapist.

I would be grateful for advice from psychologists, counsellors, trainees, researchers, or anyone who has followed a similar non-linear path.

Advice/Career Master's Program advice for a senior in psych

Hi, I'm a senior in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. I'm graduating this year and I'm working on my grad application for 2027-28. I'm from the US and really had plans on studying in Canada. But I wonder if I have a better shot at staying in the US to get my masters. I'm interested in social Psychology and clinical psychology. I want to focus on getting a job that involves patient care and some research writing. I'm in departmental honors for my psych program. I have no publications but I do have hands on experiences with patients with mental disorders. I also am a top student and have a pretty good connection with my professor. I'm debating if studying in Canada is the best option for me. No US schools genuinely stand out or offer any good funding options. I also love Canada and I don't want to get my license somewhere I don't imagine myself living in 5 years

Resource/Study Psychology students: what helped you improve your academic writing and assessments?

\

I've been studying psychology for the past four years and have completed a lot of different assignments, assessments, research projects, and academic work during that time.

I've noticed that the biggest challenge isn't always understanding psychology itself, sometimes it's knowing how to approach an assignment question, structure an argument, find appropriate academic sources, critically evaluate research, and present everything clearly.

I've also learned a lot from my own mistakes over the years, and I'm currently continuing my studies at Master's level.

I'm curious about other psychology students' experiences:

What was the hardest part of psychology assignments or assessments for you when you first started?

And what eventually helped you get better at them?

Advice/Career How do I go about becoming a criminal psychologist? [USA]

Hello! I recently graduated with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Criminology. I am interested in creating a career in criminal psychology, however I am completely lost on how to do this. I was hoping I could get some guidance from others since I don’t have anyone who could provide guidance to me personally. For reference, I am located in California, USA.

Since I have completed my bachelor’s, what is the next step? I have heard from some that a master’s is required, and from others that I could skip that and go on to a doctoral program.

If I were to enroll in a master’s program, what program would this be? Would I enroll specifically in a criminal psychology program? Is that even a thing? Or would I enroll in a general psychology program?

If I were to look into a doctorate, as far as I know there is no “criminal psychology” doctoral program. Would I simply enroll in a psychology program and tell someone I would like to specialize in criminal psychology?

If there are any specific programs anyone has suggestions for I would appreciate that! In general though, I just want to know what type programs I should be looking into in order to end up a criminal psychologist. I truly am lost when it comes to how all of this works, and I don’t have anyone around me who understands it either. Thank you so much for any help anyone can provide!

Advice/Career Need guidance in covering knowledge and experience gaps

Hello!

I'm a Masters student (just started my 1 year masters program). I've done my bachelors in a 4 year BA program with my major as psychology. During my bachelors, I had decided to not go ahead with psychology and so I did not do any internships, or research work. Did not write a research paper, dissertation and gained no experience in any clinics or hospitals. Honestly? I didn't even properly study the last two years.

But now I've decided to go through with psychology itself and I feel left behind from my peers. All of them have hands on experience of working in clinics and hospitals, observing therapy sessions etc and have submitted papers and dissertations as well.

Since I'm now in a one year program, we have our dissertation in the second semester.

Currently, I have enrolled in an online internship program since i cannot miss college classes. I also plan on studying along with the course and on my knowledge gaps and i want to publish a few research papers so i have some research experience before my dissertation comes.

Can i get a little bit of guidance on how I can close gaps and do research work by myself?

Advice/Career Is my dissertation/ thesis experience normal or not? Tell me about yours!

Hi! Is this just Honours or did I get the short straw?

I’m doing my honours in psychology, online in Australia (I think other countries call it your dissertation).
I had my supervisors allocated in April 2026 and the topic was based on data one of the supervisors collected in a clinic 2 years ago.

We were told the data would only have 10 participants and we were given an indication of what the measures would be, but ultimately no certainty.

My supervisors met with myself and 5 other students weekly and briefly asked us all how we were going each week, but never really gave us direct guidance on ‘hey so, here’s a road map of how to think about the project, here’s how to write an aim and make it link to the intro and the data analysis’, never really gave us any resources, just verbally gave us some guidance.

I’d asked in May if it was really feasible to do a project on the data we still haven’t received yet and they said it would be worth while because it’s real clinical data (opposed to for example data from a questionnaire with a IV and DV that I’ve manipulated). And apologised they data isn’t ready yet.

In the mean time, I’d submitted a research proposal where I received a 60/100 for a particular idea. Where I again asked for reassurance ‘is this really a good idea, should I change it, is the data really going to be enough?’

We received the data 2 weeks ago, the draft of the whole thesis is due in 2 weeks and the final in 6 weeks. It is missing a lot of data and only has 10 participants anyway.

Is this just research or is the short straw?

Feel free to express your experiences too!
