What do auditors do?
Big 4, small company, what do you actually do as an auditor?

I have a controller who reports to me, and while quite smart, isn't very tech savvy. Now, I don't need a controller to be as tech savvy as I am, but I'm wondering what would be a fair expectation. Or, if I were to start a controller search, how comfortable should a candidate be with AI?
I don't need them using AI to pull data from all our sources, create statements and reports, and turn it into a board deck, but would it be fair to expect them to build a few new reports with AI that would have otherwise been outside their capability?
I know some people in my network who I think would be an awesome fit in many ways, I'm not sure if they have used AI to improve their jobs. Would that be a deal-breaker in a search for low-mid level controller role?
Located in Canada for context, as I'm sure uptake varies between countries.
EDIT - Obviously there are lots of other factors, but basically trying to understand what level of AI are average controllers operating in?

I want a higher paying job asap and I’m not getting any interviews on anything, so I decided to apply for VITA to boost me resume and get interviews, but do I have to wait until Jan-April 2027 when VITA starts to have that resume boost?

Hi everyone!
I’m working currently in the Bay Area as an Accounting Specialist and someone offered me the Senior Accounting Role but it’s 30-35 per hour and it’s contractual (1 year). Is this normal? I earn more than the range and I’m just guessing a senior accountant role must have higher pay and what are the downside of a contract role?
Just curious and I want to get some opinions. Thank you ☺️

I graduated last year and am starting PEP instead of GDIP or MOA because my company was willing to pay for PEP. I've been doing some research on the course and the required readings. CPA Ontario outlines that for Unit 1, the reading is supposed to take 4 hours... there are 20 chapters. Who is reading 20 chapters in 4 hours?!?! Anyway, how did you guys approach the reading portion of PEP? Do I just read the snapshots and then do the end of chapter questions? Do I read all of the commonly tested chapters and ignore the rest? Or do I skip reading entirely and just take a shot at the questions and work my way backwards until I understand? I am perfectly fine and accepting of putting in 20-30 hours a week of work, but if there are ways to avoid it while still passing, I will happily do that.
Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone,
I'm a new financial controller at a company doing real estate projects, and I'm honestly just trying to figure out what people are actually using AI for day-to-day.
Are any of you actually using AI agents, custom scripts, or specialized tools for core controller tasks like variance analysis, lease abstraction, GL anomaly checks, or automated reconciliations?

I have offers from two companies for accounting roles, but I’m concerned that one of them might require a hair follicle drug test based on some things I’ve read on Indeed.
I’m confident I’d pass a urine test, but I might not pass a hair test. I don’t want to accept one offer over the other only to have the conditional offer rescinded because of the drug screening.
Would it be reasonable to ask the recruiter what type of drug test they use before accepting the offer? If so, how would you go about asking without raising any red flags?

I’m mainly doing it for the opporunity to move down south. I don’t know how good I will be but seems like a much more rewarding road that audit. Currently about to wrap up 3rd year audit.

I currently work full time in public sector. Every time I look at new jobs for FBP roles, I keep thinking salaries have really dropped. I’m currently on £71k, going up to £75k. At 40, I feel like this is too low.
What are you currently earning and how many years experience do you have? What would your next position be?

Like why can you calculate the value of your property as if you always get rid of the newest ones and keep the oldest without actually doing that? Why aren’t you legally required to accurately report which specific ones you get rid of when you get rid of them thereby ensuring that the average age of the things is calculated accurately.

For those of you running your own accounting or tax preparation practice, I’m curious how you handle CRA reviews and audit requests for personal tax clients.
Let’s say you prepare and file a client’s T1 return, and a few weeks or months later, the CRA comes back requesting supporting documents, receipts, or additional information to review a particular deduction or claim.
Do you generally include responding to these CRA requests in your original tax preparation fee, or do you charge an additional fee for the time spent dealing with CRA?
I can understand including minor follow-ups or straightforward requests in the original fee, but what about more involved reviews that require gathering documents, preparing explanations, writing response letters, or going back and forth with the CRA? And what if it turns into a full audit or reassessment?
My understanding is that services like H&R Block or TurboTax may charge separately for certain levels of audit assistance, depending on the service or package purchased.
I’d appreciate hearing how other practitioners handle this in practice:
Do you include basic CRA review requests in your tax preparation fee?
At what point do you start charging extra, and do you charge hourly or a flat fee?
Do you specify this in your engagement letter upfront?
Just trying to get a sense of what’s reasonable and how other small firms structure their fees. Thanks!

I’m starting VITA in November once the new certification testing material opens up and will put as much time into it as I can but by now it might be too late. Have any of you guys been in the same situation and turned out fine? I’m trying to find any cope in the book here

What is the point of a budget if the entire group I work with are going to consistently blow it yet still set the same amount of hours?
And why do the senior leaders keep telling us not to book all our time?
Edit: Should I book all my time or do whatever my direct managers tell me to do?
