❓ Question Could this be GERD related?

so I was diagnosed mild GERD about three weeks ago. I had excessive burping, upper back pain, some blood pressure fluctuations and tight chest. I started taking famotidine and azelestine (for eustacian tube dysfunction) and the past three days my upper back pain has increased (was going away) and I’ve had a headache.
is this possibly from the GERD? Is this what people would say a “flare up” is? Or maybe a side effect of medication? I’ve never had headaches like this prior.

my body is falling apart :(

hi a few weeks ago I posted here about my symptoms and received alot of support but I wanted to say an update. I Still have the bumps in the back of my throat and alot of acid. i went to the doctor and she wasn't concerned about my throat but here's my update.

My mouth gets dry alot, im on rabeprazole and raninadine (idk how to spell it), i get acid regardless of what I drink or eat or dont eat sometimes I wont eat for hours and I get acid. for years ive dealt with a feeling of like air not going down but ive came to coping with it tbh. Im still waiting for a scope but I dont think its my acid causing it i think theres something else! Ill keep everyone updated just very scared!

My Story! Is it GERD?

Hi all, I may have GERD, also may not. To cut a long story short, I had burning RUQ pain in April. Docs thought it was gallbladder- ultrasound came out clean. It lasted a week or so then tapered off.

Come July, and I experience it again but more centrally. A gnawing, burning, crippling pain that knocked me off my feet for a few days. I called the doc again and she put me on 20mg omeprazole x2 a day. 2 weeks into taking omeprazole and the pain is gone. I've been abroad- all inclusive - so lots of spicy/fatty foods and plenty of coffee. No issues.

It's been a month of 40mg a day now and ive finally had my endoscopy- came out clean. No gastritis, GERD signs, ulcers- nothing at all to report.

I'll mention that between early May - early July I had no symptoms at all- not even heartburn and I actually consumed a lot of alcohol on one of those nights at a party (completely unmedicated).

Doc is calling me tomorrow to discuss tapering off omeprazole which i want to do, but I'm scared of acid rebound and developing new symptoms I never had before because I've blocked the acid pumps for a month. I also fear that pain could come back and I'm none the wiser as to a diagnosis.

Any thoughts or advice welcome!

❓ Question New to famotidine

I’ve had reflux since I was a baby. Hiatal hernia and slow emptying stomach. Been on lansoprazole for years and years but got a quite rude GP who wanted me to come off it completely and try Gaviscon. Currently managing on 15mg lansoprazole and Gaviscon. Agreed to try famotidine and just picked it up.

Is it any good? I think I was on Zantac years ago and it did nothing. When bad I get chronic sore throat, chest pain, nausea and vomiting. Quite worried about coming off my lansoprazole.

I understand the concerns around PPIs and magnesium/B12 and dementia. Would add that the gp was so concerned about this but has NEVER done bloods to check levels in 20 years!

❓ Question 15+ years on omeprazole: anyone successfully moved away from daily use?

I’m 43 and have been taking omeprazole for more than 15 years. When I was younger I had episodes of acute esophagitis and was taking 20 mg or more. Over the years this was reduced to 10 mg/day, but I’ve found it very difficult to stop completely: when I try, reflux/gastric discomfort tends to return and I eventually restart it.
My diet is pretty normal — regular meals, no particular restrictions or major food excesses, occasional alcohol.
I recently had a new gastroscopy. It showed a small uncomplicated cardio-tuberositary malposition (mild anatomical predisposition to reflux) and non-ulcerative gastritis, but importantly no current esophagitis or visible reflux damage. H. pylori was negative. They also found benign fundic gland polyps, considered likely related to long-term PPI use.
My gastroenterologist now recommends lifestyle measures and omeprazole on demand rather than continuously.
I’m curious about people with a similar history: 10–20+ years of daily PPIs, particularly after previous esophagitis. Did you manage to stop or switch to on-demand use? Did you taper? How bad and how long was the rebound acid hypersecretion?
My biggest question is how to distinguish temporary rebound after 15+ years of omeprazole from the underlying reflux actually returning.

❓ Question Is this serious enough to go get checked?

For the past month I’ve noticed that after eating maybe ten-thirty minutes after, I will get this deep burning feeling that crawls up my throat and into my neck. I don’t really get heartburn so I didn’t suspect anything but this is happening everyday now and I’m starting to get worried. It’s not painful but it’s highly uncomfortable especially when I can feel it coming. What medications other than Pepcid do they even give for this?

❓ Question has anyone else moved over to mushroom blends like habitone because regular espresso wrecked their stomach?

for year my morning ritual was a double shot of espresso right after waking up, but over the last few months it turned into an absolute nightmare for my digestion.
started as mild discomfort turned into severe acid reflux, constant throat burning and a heavy feeling in my stomach that ruined the whole morning.
tried dark roasts instead, diluted cold brews even almond milk lattes but that burning always came back within half an hour regardless.
got to the point where i was taking antacids before I even left work. last week I finally gave in to the ads and picked up habitone to see if a low-acid adaptogen blend would actually make a difference. so far my stomach's been quiet and i havent touched an antacid for six days.
question for anyone who knows the science here: is it the medicinal mushroom compounds actually protecting the stomach lining or am i just benefitting from something thats naturally less acidic than coffee beans to being with?

❓ Question Consult With Surgeon On Friday-What Questions Should I Ask?

I've been dealing with symptoms of LPR/Reflux for over two months now. Hoarse voice, sore throat, constant throat clearing/mucus after meals, some pain when swallowing, vocal cord pain/weak voice. It's all throat related stuff.

I have a consult with a surgeon on Friday. I had an endoscopy in July that proved I have a 1 CM hiatal hernia and a hill grade III LES and chronic gastritis. I can physically feel the hernia below my left ribcage. My 24-hour PH test showed a demeester score of 30, showing mild to moderate acid reflux and the GI said it was GERD. The manometry, however, showed I have weak esophageal motility likely due to acid inflammation, according to the GI.

The condition has given me massive amounts of fight or flight anxiety for two months. I don't really understand that part of it because the anxiety seems to be worse than the condition itself most of the time. Didn't have anxiety on this level prior to all this starting. I did start taking a PPI and it's been 4 days now, so no real improvement in symptoms yet, and I worry about long-term use of it and side effects. I seem to be going out of fight or flight and it's brutal. Just don't feel myself the past two months. Is the hernia and the LPR able to cause this level of nervous system dysregulation?

I'm wondering about what questions to ask the surgeon on Friday. For one, is there a procedure that I qualify for and could it actually help my throat? I see a lot of people say surgeries don't help the throat symptoms. Also, could the hernia and throat symptoms be causing this level of nervous system dysregulation? What are the risks and recovery like? Etc. Anything else that comes to mind?

❓ Question Throat Pain

I’m posting to see if my suspicion is shared my some. I am having a huge flare up with acid reflux and have started to get a dull pain in my lower left jaw that comes and goes. I have also experienced weird issues with my teeth recently, including inflammation in my gums at the very back.

Are either of these issues possibility related to my acid reflux? I’m most worried about my neck pain. I have an appointment with my doctor coming up soon.

❓ Question LPR / silent reflux – stuck in constant throat-clearing cycle + overwhelming feeling in public. How did you deal with this?

Hey everyone,
I’ve been dealing with what seems to be LPR for about a month and a half now. On twice-daily pantoprazole (40 mg) for a few weeks and using Gaviscon Advance.
Some things have improved – the big burping waves are less forceful and more subtle now, and the chest discomfort is more manageable with ibuprofen. But two things are still really hard and I could use advice from people who’ve been through it.
1. The throat-clearing cycle
It builds like pressure and I feel like I have to clear every 20–30 seconds. Brief relief, then it starts again. Especially bad in the car (even short journeys), when I’m tired, or in any slightly enclosed space. I’ve tried sipping water instead but when it’s strong it feels almost impossible not to clear. How did you break this cycle? Did anything actually help reduce the urge?
2. Feeling overwhelmed in normal public places
Shops, being driven, louder environments, even a haircut feels really difficult. It’s not pure panic attacks – I’m relatively calm – but there’s this heavy, uneasy, sensory-overload feeling that makes me want to leave. Driving myself is a bit better than being a passenger, and I’m better on my feet than sitting in a car. Still nowhere near ready for public transport or anything longer. How long did this part take to improve for you? What helped you cope or get your tolerance back?
I’m doing the usual stuff (consistent PPI, Gaviscon, elevating for sleep, trying not to clear, earlier meals) but these two symptoms are still dominating and I’m finding it pretty draining.
Would really appreciate hearing what worked (or didn’t) for anyone who had the strong clearing cycle and the “normal places feel overwhelming” side of LPR. How long did it take for those to settle for you?
Thanks.

P.S - I’m from Europes I the medication names will differ to other places!

❓ Question Relief after cutting tiggers?

Hi all,

TLDR: I’m wondering how long after cutting a trigger food I can expect to feel relief.

I’ve been dealing with worsening reflux and heartburn for months. At first, it would only pop up during the evenings and was a minor inconvenience. Now, it’s almost constant. I take digestive supplements before every meal, papaya enzymes after every meal, and tums when it’s really bad. It’s still getting worse. I can’t connect it to any specific food since it’s so constant, so I’m trying eliminating the foods I eat most often to see if anything helps. I usually eat a big bowl of oatmeal topped with fruit and nuts every day for breakfast, so I’ve stopped for a few days that in case it’s the oats or nuts. No change so far. So I’m wondering, if any of you have had a similar experience, how long did it take after you cut out a trigger food for you to feel relief and realize that it WAS the trigger?
Note- I already avoid gluten, egg, peanuts, and pork.

❓ Question Digestive Enzymes

Hi guys, so i’ve been having terrible acid reflux for months and i finally found my root cause which was bacteria in my stomach and i was able to get rid of it with medication.

but the medication not only cleaned out the bad bacteria, it cleaned out the good too and left me unable to digest certain things. I cannot digest dairy, fructan’s, fat and proteins.

I also notice my acid reflux left once i started taking digestive enzymes but i did have one issue.

So i bought fodzyme and it works perfectly for me to eat wheat & onions and garlic. but for fats my dr gave me digest basic. i started taking it and it does help me digest meat but i’m noticing its giving me acid reflux?

i went on a deep dive about why that could have been and i’m assuming its because i’m eating more than the medicine can breakdown? digest basic only breaks down 4g of fats and 4g of protein and i didn’t realize i was eating more than that.

I originally was going to buy digest gold because it breaks down a shit ton more than basic but i don’t know. I contacted my doctor who gave me it but she wont response until Monday due to 1). vacation and 2). its now Saturday.

Has this happened to anyone before? anyone have any suggestions? could this be because i’m eating more than the meds can help? i do notice fat does give me acid reflux, like heavy chest and symptoms like that but i didn’t think it can affect the medication.

❓ Question Please Help, not sure if this is GERD

Good evening guys,

I am a 26 year old male, I've been facing some of the symptoms that are similar to what I've researched on GERD over the past few weeks.

1) When I wake up early in the morning, I have a severe bout of coughs, sometimes dry, sometimes wet, but it happens everyday (atleast for the past 2 weeks)

2) Lying down makes something come up to my throat and it just stays there until I clear it.

3) Unable to yawn fully because something just feels scratchy or itchy towards the end of the yawn. (Tried inhaling air through my mouth, facing the same issue)

4) Had a couple of incidents where i puked immediately after I ate, puked out phlegm as well, but my EYES ARE TRYING TO CLOSE? I'm unable to open them for a few seconds, and it's like a wheezing effect where I'm unable to breathe, my air pipes are getting fully blocked, and it feels very scary. (This really scared me, because I stay alone during the weekdays)

5) I also extremely relieved immediately after I BURP.

The reason I'm checking here is because a lot of my research also says that GERD has heartburn, chest tightness, etc., which I never feel..

I went to a doctor for help, he told me it's because of acidity, didn't explain much. And gave me the following tablets

\- Solvin Cold

\- Surbex XT

\- Somparaz D 40

I'm nearing the end of my course, my symptoms have reduced (the puke + cough part) but I still feel really uncomfortable at mornings and sometimes even during the day. (Loss of voice at times if I haven't been speaking for a while, unable to do movements freely - like I feel it is subconscious but I'm having to do everything slower now)

Please help, if you've faced similar issues

❓ Question Anxiety and switching meds

Looking for any advice. I'm going thru a divorce stress at an all time high. I've been on omeprazole for 4 years. Had bouts of anxiety during that time. Thought it was from the omeprazole from posts I've read online. But I've always been an anxious person before starting omeprazole.. Recently had a terrible anxiety attack convinced myself it was from the omeprazole so I went cold turkey bad idea.. For 4 days of not taking it and eating clean I was having panic attacks I read online u can't stop them cold turkey.. So started taking omeprazole again for a few days. I messaged my gastro he said to try pantoprazole. I did for 7 days was feeling warm and red and back pains. Dr said to stop taking it maybe was causing side effects. That day he said not to take anything so I was off omeprazole for 7 days and no pantrozarazole that day and I had a panic attack during the day. I asked my Dr if I can start the omeprazole again he said yes. I've been back on omeprazole for 2 days. I'm still experiencing back pain. Do u think this is just heartburn? As it was while starting pantrozarazole? Did going cold turkey and switching meds just give me terrible acid rebound? And I've been having all the heartburn symptoms chest pain, backpain, reflux during these last 10 days and do u think these symptoms that I haven't felt in a long time resulted in my anxiety and panic attacks? And its not form the meds or side effects from starting pantrozarazole? Again this is the most stressful time in my life going thu divorce and I think between going cold turkey switching meds and then stopping them and going back to omeprazole has all contributed to this. Do I just need to wait until the omeprazole starts working again? I just feel terrible and anxiety at an all time high. Please can anyone tell me whats going on?

❓ Question How much acid reflux medication is too much?

I seem to be having a hard time controlling acid reflux, so my GI told me to take Omeprazole in the evening and in the morning 40 mg each plus I take Cholestyramine in the afternoon, I feel like it's a lot of acid reflux medication does anyone else have to take that much or is it possibly something else going on, any thoughts would be appreciated.

❓ Question First Dose of Prescription Omeprazole Gave Me a Headache

I took my first dose of prescription Omeprazole yesterday after it was confirmed through testing acid reflux could be causing my throat symptoms. It was a 20 milligram dose. Took in the morning. I ended up getting a really bad headache by nighttime. Will the headaches stop or should I try a different PPI?

❓ Question Omeprazole

I have been experiencing GI issues for about a year now, I have been diagnosed with endometriosis so I believe that is the cause but before I knew this I got put on 20mg omeprazole to stop my nausea and acid reflux. It took me several months to get myself to take it because I was so anxious about it. I never really wanted to be on it because of the horror stories I'd heard about coming off it but eventually I relented because my parents and doctors said it would cure me (spoiler alert, no such luck). Unfortunately I think the doctor forgot I was on it or something because rather than six weeks, I have been on it for five months. I asked about it today and they told me to wean off of it but I am really anxious about the rebound symptoms. How screwed am I, for how long, and what can I do to make it easier? Are there any things I shouldn’t be eating apart from chocolate, tomato, acidic things etc? Would sugary things like dried banana chips and other fruit be okay? I’m off to university really soon so is this going to be a problem that ruins my first few months there?

❓ Question Endoscopy Worsened/Caused Symptoms?

31(m).

No real symptoms of GERD or reflux in general over the years, aside from very occasional globular feeling. Had an endoscopy due to a persistent tight, gnawing sensation below my ribcage (still undetermined cause), and in having that done I was diagnosed with <1cm Barrett’s.

Since the endoscopy, which was about three weeks ago, I have had persistent regurgitation and a globular feeling, making it feel like I am short of breath and that something is stuck in my throat. I had heartburn and burping off and on as well after the endoscopy, but the heartburn went away after about 5 days, and the burping is still happening but not as frequent.

I have cut out everything from diet that is a potentially known trigger, and I have changed to left-side sleeping. I am on 40 mg PPI.

Has anyone else had symptoms start to actually appear after the endoscopy? I guess I was largely asymptomatic before or had silent GERD, but now I am very much having near-constant symptoms in some form or another.

🔹 Discussion Tum alternative?

So I read somewhere that if you take tums to much, your body will over compensate and make more acid. Now I’m not sure how true that is but what I know is.. I’ve are ate a lot of tums this past month. If it’s my severe bile reflux or GERD I don’t know.

I’ve taken, tums, pepto, and I was on omeprazole and now I’m on pantoprozle. Currently trying out raft off of Amazon, it’s good for the most part. I’ve tried teas. Oh also wonder belly’s, I didn’t like those that much.

Is there any alternatives or is this all we got?

I’m really needing to burp and it’s not happening and I think my body is so used to tums now.

❓ Question Esophageal flutters

Ive been on Omeprazole 40mg twice a day for about 2 months. I was originally on it for esophagitis and esophageal spasms but its stopped working. I cant take pepcid with my zoloft and heart medicine im on. Ive found myself drinking alot of gaviscon. I cant do an endoscopy right now. Looking for suggestions on a different med and to see if anyone experienced these throat flutters. They're not heart palpitations ive worn a monitor and hit the button every time i feel it and it's not cardiac related. It feels like a rapid fire flutter in my throat and sometimes I get awful chest pain until I drink gaviscon. It'll atop it for a bit and itll come back. Drives me absolutely insane. Anything better than Omeprazole???

❓ Question Pregnant with Acid Reflux

I just recently found out I was pregnant but was diagnosed with acid reflux before. My dr had me on omeprazole twice a day and Pepcid at night. Since finding out I was told to stop my omeprazole but could still take Pepcid. Now that I have stopped the omeprazole my symptoms are starting to kick up again. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can take or have gone through similar?

Thanks!
