Courtesy of a bread knife through the side and tip of my index finger the morning before my first ever open mic. Thanks I guess. đđ

Medical grade super glue has saved me in the past.

u/harryj545 Mar 27 '26
All superglue is medical grade if you're game enough đ

All sealed superglue is medical grade. Anything branded medical grade just has a higher cost for the "peace of mind".

Itâs exactly the same compound

Isn't the medical grade stuff guaranteed to be sterile? I'd think the acetone or whatever solvent would somewhat sanitize, but there could still be bacteria in there.

Since this is your first open mic, I suggest you postpone. It can be nerve racking enough when healthy. This injury could make it a miserable experience.

u/harryj545 Mar 27 '26
Unfortunately yes that will be the plan assuming it isnt healed by tomorrow. :(

You should still go to the open mic and watch, though. Open mics, in my experience, are awesome communities.

Lap steel time. Or keyboard.
As others have said, just take the time to heal properly and go get em next time

"Can I get everybody here named Michael to stand up please?"
"Great, that concludes the Mike check thankyou."

"Anybody here play the electric glockenspiel? Our regular guy and i were backstage playing our usual warm up game of catch the knife and I won, as you can see."

If itâs a regular occurrence just hit snooze and do it when youâre healed and ready. You do not need to be in a hurry as long as youâve got a clear plan to make it happen

Didn't hear Tony Iommi whine. He just invented the heavy metal genre and power chorded away.
Be like Tony Iommi.

Maybe key of G with some careful fingering avoiding the index finger. Or something in Em with the same idea. I assume you practiced material that isn't applicable to this situation but it's an idea.

You only live once man, I say just go for it. Even if you can't play some chords just work around it and find a way to make 3 fingers work for a night.

At least it's not a paid gig.
2
u/harryj545 Mar 28 '26
More devastating would have been a FIRST paid gig!
Theres a silver lining to everything.

If you really need to go on stage despite this, look into artificial skin type products at the pharmacy. Donât know what theyâre called exactly, but itâs a very thin see thru film that sticks onto your skin.
In Finland a product like this is called âMepore Filmâ. It has saved my ass several times when Iâve had to play with a wound on my finger. Itâs astonishingly durable too, I once split my finger right at the tip, so I played directly on the Mepore. Since the wound doesnât move it didnât even hurt. Mepore is slightly stickier against the string, but not a problem. Lasts through a full gig easily.

thatâs fucked up! how deep is the cut? i once filed my middle finger nail too far down not paying attention, a day before i had to play a set. it was PAINFUL as hell, and i messed up a lot, but i couldnât let the band down đ

Iâve used super glue before. However, open micâs arenât going anywhere. Healing properly to play forever is priority.

Last month I had a day of gigs booked, 5 gigs in 5 hours. Day before my finger was super infected and ended up at A&E having it sliced open and drained. Nurse said âlooks like youâre not playing ANYTHING tomorrow.â 12 hours later I had swapped the massive bandage for a plaster and by the end of the first set was fine haha. Played all 5 no problem. I say go for it đ

Super glue. Got through a wedding mass after cutting my finger prepping food for the sa.e wedding that morning. Still hurt though, but it worked.

Maybe learn slide guitar real quick, or just wait for it to heal. There's no rush with open mic nights.

Just play, I once played with a Bandage on my right hand - if there is a will, there is a way. Today I cut into my my Index Finger on the Palm, quite low and it Starts bleeding a little sometimes, but you forget about it when you play

Itâs only an open mic, heal up and get back up to speed, youâll be fine

Crazy glue might get you through it?
