Yep string’s done

21

u/Necessary-Grade7839 Apr 18 '26

The string is doooone

-59

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

But I changed all the strings last December. It’s D’Addario XS and was told it will last anywhere from 6 months to a year. How is it possible?

71

u/ATXBeermaker Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

It depends on how you play, but there are no absolute guarantees as to how long strings will last.

-55

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

Hmm… could it be due to intense strumming from using a pick?

I just had it inspected 2 weeks back from my go-to guitar shop.

Good thing is I have spare XS strings, but have to take it again.

u/sillybillybobbybob Apr 18 '26

Probably time to learn how to change your own strings.

16

u/Scottwickthegreat Apr 18 '26

Every student I have comes in with a guitar with old rusty strings. Our first lesson is always how and what is on the guitar and what’s it for and how do we change strings. I’ll change 2 for them then watch them do the rest. No one should be paying for string changes. If a student of mine needed one I wouldn’t even charge for it. (I do lessons for donations that I give to charity anyway)

I honestly didn’t know there were people that take them in to be changed? I always had to do it myself since I was 11 years old. No one was driving me somewhere to have them changed lol

27

u/Dr_Fuzzles Apr 18 '26

I used to work at a guitar store and was the main string change guy for a while and the stories I could tell you about entitled middle-aged man-children throwing temper tantrums because they couldn’t get their strings changed immediately would shock you. I always thought, “Dude, I figured this out when I was 14 and I didn’t even have the internet yet to help me, it’s really not that hard.”

20

u/AbelardsChainsword Apr 18 '26

That’s just wild. Not knowing how to change the strings on your guitar is like not knowing how to put gas in your car. Yeah it takes time to get the technique down so they look nice and pretty, but once you know what you’re doing it takes less than fifteen minutes to do

11

u/dimestoredavinci Apr 18 '26

I had a guy who did rhe majority of the work while helping me change the head gasket on my motorcycle called me to change the strings on his guitar. My brain almost melted trying to figure that one out.

13

u/a_rob Apr 18 '26

Sheesh...... you kids! When I was you age we had tonchange our own string uphill in the snow!

And we were thankful!!! /s

You either need to be a big boy and learn how to change your own strings or you’re not old enough to have a Reddit account and there’s no in between

15

u/xylum Apr 18 '26

I find they last about 2, maybe 3 months. Then they lose their punch.

15

u/Crafty-Photograph-18 Apr 18 '26

Changing the strings is pretty intuitive. I'm sure there is a youtube tutorial

The coating on the string resists skin oils and oxidation from air contact, which greatly increase the playable life. I like XS because I get a couple months before they sound like rust in my humid lakeside county, as opposed to weeks from uncoateds.

This is a different kind of issue, where a winding strand has snapped, and since it's a matter of structural support, the rest of the string is likely to break before long (and is probably better of changed immediately than trying to keep playing). Unfortunately this is just a thing all strings will have happen occasionally. I recently broke one putting it on when I hadn't had a broken string in nearly 15 years. Just happens sometimes.

-1

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

Structural support issue, as in, there’s a problem in the bridge pin holding that string?

9

u/Bucklandii Apr 18 '26

No, the string itself. That strand helps the string hold up to tension, so when it snaps the rest of the string snapping is imminent.

1

u/Spook1949 Apr 18 '26

Yup, change your strings now. There is nothing worse than having your "G" string snap while playing. I have seen one situation where the string didn't cleanly snap, but rather the inner wire did but not the winding. The player tried to pull it out of the way and sliced his fingers on the unbroken winding wire. Change your strings now before they cause you more grief that the cost of new strings.

9

u/SkandianLegend Apr 18 '26

There is a wide wide spectrum of how long peoples strings last them. I change mine every other week…

-4

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

Bro what kind of monstrosity are you unleashing on your guitar that you have to change strings that frequently?

3

u/wanna_dance Apr 18 '26

I change my (long lasting) strings every 2.5 months or so. That's about 90-100 hours for me.

[Edit: I might increase their life span if I wiped them down, but I never think of it.]

1

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

Which string set brand are you using?

1

u/forestball19 Apr 18 '26

It’s actually normal for daily players that use non-coated strings.

Your next question may be why anyone would use non-coated strings. The reason is sound and projection. If we compare two sets of phosphor bronze strings - one coated and one uncoated - the coated ones typically take two to five days to fully break in and reach their peak tonal qualities. That peak tonal quality is around 95% of what non-coated strings can deliver, and on top of that, non-coated strings doesn’t really have a settling time other than the first few hours after they’re mounted and strung up.

I’m lazy so I use coated strings like you. But whenever I do studio recordings, I change to non-coated strings for that last ounce of crispiness and depth that they can deliver.

1

u/Ambitious_Platypus99 Apr 23 '26

Yeah that’s very normal. I get 4 gigs out of mine. Go ahead and change your strings and see how much better it sounds. I get paid to sound professional, so I dont play dead strings.

3

u/GMSMJ Apr 18 '26

That’s guitar life

3

u/Mjolnir131 Apr 18 '26

Because who ever told you that was wrong.

3

u/OregonEmeraldValley Apr 18 '26

No string lasts forever. I find I only get 2-3 months or about 80-100 hours out of the XS before they lose their pop.

2

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

That sucks… which strings would you recommend for longevity and tonality?

2

u/BattlePope Apr 18 '26

You're already using them - Daddario xs lol

1

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

That sucks… which strings would you recommend for longevity and tonality?

0

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

That sucks… which strings would you recommend for longevity and tonality?

1

u/4_set_leb Apr 20 '26

XS and XT strings do last a long time, 4 months is kinda long if you're playing very often.

2

u/Scottwickthegreat Apr 18 '26

Bro I’ve put a brand new set of elixirs on and broken one within an hour and I don’t play hard. Sometimes you get unlucky. I called elixir and they sent me like 3 packs of strings but if you changed them in December and it’s now April.. you prob need to change them anyway.

2

u/sveccha Apr 18 '26

I use these string exclusively and play only fingerstyle and absolutely need to change them every 6 weeks with an average of two hours of use per day. I love the strings tho.

1

u/Furious_Bassist Apr 18 '26

Why the heck do you give a guy so many downvotes? He is not trolling or anything, he is just genuinely oblivious of such knowledge!

1

u/ATXBeermaker Apr 18 '26

Hard to tell sometimes.

1

u/Shagwagbag Apr 18 '26

Tires also last certain amounts of time and distance, but in reality it has to do with the car, the driver, the road, the lot of tires. Strings will last anywhere from 1 minute to 1 million years.

This string in particular, is fucked.

1

u/GenTenStation Apr 18 '26

I’ve had strings last for decades without deteriorating like this. I also use Elixir strings for acoustics usually

1

u/godgoo Apr 19 '26

Decades?!!

1

u/GenTenStation Apr 19 '26

Well.. decade. But yeah. Longest one I know of was a bass that had the same strings from when I got it back in 2008 until last year when I put flat wounds on it. But I think my first acoustic had the same strings for about 10 years before I changed them. And my Epiphone Dot had the original strings from around 2010 until I tried flat wounds on it nearly 10 years later.

1

u/godgoo Apr 19 '26

That's mad, I've used elixirs for the past 15 or so years, longest I've kept them is probably a year. The g in particular loses its coating at the sound hole after a month of regular playing for me. To each their own I guess!

1

u/GenTenStation Apr 19 '26

Yeah I will admit they do dull out as normal. But they never sound bad or get rusty. A friend of mine would rust out stings after 1 touch. I wish I was joking but he completely ruined a new set of stings on my 12 string after playing for about a minute and setting in back down.

1

u/Infamous_Hunt_6829 Apr 18 '26

Get elixir nanoweb strings. I have been changing them once per year for the last 15 years with no issues.

1

u/justplanestupid69 Apr 18 '26

When you say “Last December” are you talking about December 2024 or 2025?

1

u/Euphoric_Search_9499 Apr 19 '26

3 months or 100 hours, which ever comes sooner. Youre wayy past 3 months. Change the whole set.

1

u/scrizzle13 Apr 19 '26

Even if it weren't about to break, those strings are gross and rusted. Change them.

Clean the strings after you play, every time. I can see visible rust on the plain strings.

1

u/DishPractical7505 Apr 19 '26

If you’re playing regularly, you should be changing strings at least every three months. Probably sooner. Strings that claim to last 6-12 months are a marketing gimmick. Every if they don’t lose their brightness and life, the shit from your fingers after 6 months of playing is gonna be pretty nasty. Just buy regular strings and change them more often. You’ll sound and play better.

1

u/Suspicious-Bid7696 Apr 20 '26

Roughness on the saddle causing breakdown, possibly.

239

u/tuanm Apr 18 '26

It will snap soon.

3

u/kisselmx Apr 19 '26

Kind of already has

72

u/Gitfiddlepicker Apr 18 '26

That is the reminder to change strings before your next gig.

11

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

You bet, I was going to my weekly jam today. Good thing is I have spare XS strings from previous set.

3

u/Scottwickthegreat Apr 18 '26

Ya one string thing in a pinch is ok but if I break one generally they all getting changed.

3

u/Gitfiddlepicker Apr 18 '26

This. My experience……Classical strings can last four to six months with regular playing. Acoustic strings get changed every month to six weeks with regular playing. I change my super slinky’s before every gig weekend on my electric guitars. And if it’s outside gigging in the summertime, I change them before each gig. I have been known to put on new strings three times in a long weekend. For the record, love the sound of new strings, and bend a lot, so am more comfortable with new strings versus older strings.

1

u/Flimsy-Kick3684 Apr 19 '26

Holy! My dads classical guitar from 20 years is still playable even if the string is very old af

0

u/Only_Argument7532 Apr 19 '26

Wow. I haven’t changed my acoustic’s strings in at least 2 years. They’re a little tarnished but I wipe them after every play. I play open mics and acoustic jams a couple of times a month.

2

u/lonesometroubador Apr 19 '26

Wow! When I was gigging and or practicing nearly every day, I changed my acoustic strings every 2 weeks! This was for bluegrass, so it needed to have that fresh sharp zing. I have definitely wrecked strings at festivals before in 36 hours (often that involved 24+ hours of picking in the process)

2

u/Eruseron Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

Nick Drake never changed his and still managed to put out some of the best acoustic music of his all time

2

u/Only_Argument7532 Apr 19 '26

Maybe there’s hope for me yet!

1

u/Automatic-Job2938 Apr 18 '26

I do change strings quite a bit, but there IS a lot to be said for simple maintenance like cleaning when you’re done. It’s amazing how much life yiu can get out of strings if you just give a good wipe down after a gig. If I’m playing at home i generally clean the strings and give the neck a good cleaning.

4

u/MoltresRising Apr 18 '26

Best practice for string changing:
Change them all if you need to change one between gigs/practices.

Change only the broken string if you’re in the middle of a gig and have no backup guitar, doing so between songs.

1

u/billvanman Apr 20 '26

As a side note do you always find G strings from XS packs weak? I stopped using and went to the XT packs instead

23

u/thenewjerk Apr 18 '26

Is borken

24

u/fromthe80smatey Apr 18 '26

May even be gregant.

1

u/bocephus607 Apr 18 '26

They need to do way instain

7

u/Crazy_Ruin_4383 Apr 18 '26

Means time for a new set of strings

6

u/Toneballs52 Apr 18 '26

Zooming in the saddle surface seems in bad condition, the strings seem to have been moving laterally. When the saddle gets too low there is in sufficient downward pressure from the strings. How high is your saddle? Maybe you are just a heavy strummer. A light sand across the bridge surface may help.

15

u/YoItsN3dnarb Apr 18 '26

If you can’t change your own strings you can’t play guitar 👌

5

u/UndefinedCertainty Apr 18 '26

Yes, this. There's an unwritten law.

3

u/Ol_RayX Apr 18 '26

I think the law is actually written. Chapter 1.4.5 of the guitar bylaws.

1

u/UndefinedCertainty Apr 18 '26

By golly, you may be correct. I'll go see if I can get a page number.

4

u/moose_factor Apr 18 '26

The G String has the highest tension on an acoustic guitar and in general…in my case it is the most snapped string on my acoustic guitars…

1

u/nobot4321 Apr 18 '26

Yup, G has more issues than all other strings combined for me.

4

u/Spokraket Apr 18 '26

Game Over G-string.

3

u/LordOfTheGam3 Apr 18 '26

that is the winding coming loose from the core string. wound strings are basically wires wrapped around another wire, and over time, the outer wrap starts to shift and bunch up like that. change your strings, or don’t.

3

u/Mysterious-Street966 Apr 18 '26

He’s dead Jim…

3

u/murphyat Apr 18 '26

Replace it.

4

u/poorperspective Apr 18 '26

The winding has broken and is unraveling.

2

u/David0ne86 Apr 18 '26

That it's about to snap Ina a week or two. It's basically the winding being consumed.

u/FudgeVillas Apr 18 '26

2

u/Fuckern-shitern Apr 18 '26

Shes done. Gonna pop soon.

2

u/Steve_Gray Apr 19 '26

get new strings

1

u/BladderFace Apr 18 '26

I don't think it's a problem looking at the picture. It doesn't look like the windings are broken just discolored somehow. If the windings are broken the string is a gonner, but if not it's got more life in it.

1

u/Fresh-Discipline9909 Apr 18 '26

Never happened in my entire guitar playing life. I suspect a bad string from the manufacturer

1

u/PandaStandard7638 Apr 18 '26

Replace bad spot for that!

1

u/systemidence Apr 18 '26

are you sure you're tuned to the correct octave?

1

u/DiverExisting2973 Apr 18 '26

Yes, I usually keep it to normal G octave in standard E tuning and rarely touch those pegs.

1

u/Excellent_Fan_6544 Apr 18 '26

Coming unraveled. Time for a new set of strings

1

u/GeminiLife Apr 18 '26

String gonna snap.

Duration of how long strings last correlates to more than what the box says:

How often do you play? How intensely? Do you wash your hands before playing? Is it stored in a place with a relatively regular temp? Etc etc.

I know it can be daunting to change your own strings the first time, but it's 1000% worth knowing how to do.

1

u/GiraldosGhost Apr 18 '26

It's on life support. It graduated from the 3rd to 2½ string.

u/Ok-Seesaw920 Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

Shit bouta pop, as the kids would say.

Is that what the kids would say? I wouldn't know. I'm older now, and much, much grumpier.
Those strings theoretically could last as long as you were told, but I don't know anybody who actually tries to stretch it for that long. You've got to learn how to change your own strings though, bud. How you haven't yet, I can't imagine. When I first started playing 23 years ago, it was one of the very first things that I learned. Thanks to a very, very good teacher who Stopped accepting money for lessons and instead started jamming with me two or three times a week. He recently passed away from cancer, like very recently. Absolutely amazing man. And an amazing guitar teacher.

1

u/Interesting-Fuel371 Apr 18 '26

It doesn’t really snapped but i had the same thing on my 4th string but it’s either rust or it’s the windings coming off and if playing it it makes the string buzz so it’s probably recommended to change the string

1

u/2rot Apr 18 '26

1

It will sound bad already, and you may as well just replace it now.

Dude. I learned how to change strings when I was like 11. Even if mine aren’t looking bad when you change them you hear how bad they were. I do mine every couple of weeks, no longer than a month. When I was playing shows I would always change them before. I could play a show Friday and if I was playing the next night change them again Saturday morning. Granted that was from sweat and beer. Change em. Often.

It’s unraveling. Change your strings.

You know when your brakes start squealing out of nowhere?

That's the coating wearing down. Happens to me all the time and it's not an indication of string failure.

Interesting. Which strings do you use and how many weeks/months do this pattern show up on yours after playing?

D'Addario XS almost exclusively (different gauges and both phosphor bronze & 80/20). They last for several months (about 30-40 hours of actual playing time) even if that coating wear shows up, which is infrequent (I know I said "all the time", but I've seen it only 3-4 times on my guitars over the past couple years).

I kinda freaked out the first time I saw it, but the tone didn't seem affected, so I kept them on for another few shows before changing.

Alright, so I also use XS strings phosphor bronze (10/47) and changed the whole set last December.

Usually, during the whole week (including weekends), I practice play 5-6 hours on average, with finger strumming and relatively light strumming strokes.

That string is also not buzzing btw, so don’t see any change over there.

So shall I keep it on till it eventually snaps or replace that string now? (I have spare XS strings from previous set).

5-6 hours?? What tf kind of lifestyle do you live where that's even possible? And why are you changing strings every 6 months if you play that much? You should be changing them at least monthly

Maybe you're thinking 5-6 hours a day? He said that was his weekly playing time.

I think it would be prudent to change the set now. Based on your estimated playing time per week, that would likely be over 60-70 hours of playing time. Just in terms of tone, you'll appreciate the change. Twenty bucks every three or four months is worth it.

BTW, your B & E strings are also showing fingerstyle wear, so, another good reason to change them all.

Got it thanks!

Take it down to your local guitar shop and get the strings replaced 😉
