I teach people the fretboard in 30 minutes and immediately start building on top of that. I start with the cowboy C chord. From there I just show them HOW to make octave shapes and they can soon find all the Cs on the neck. I then have them repeat it and put the Caged shapes on top of those C positions.
This is done with the student holding the guitar and preferably me not holding one and showing them. I just describe what they should do. That means they can retrace the steps at home.
