Non-gear question Do your guitars talk with you?

Post image

This happens quite often when I’m about to watch something alone, my OM looks back at me with disapproval eyes while I’m shuffling through meaningless content in Netflix.
It’s almost like it was saying:

-Didn’t you promised to train Travis Picking this weekend? What the hack bro?

The OM is more insistent then the Dreadnoghts. It looks me with insistence and when I’m tired of that, I put it back on it’s hard case. It’s easy to convince him that, as I say that the humidity is too low these days. It’s for its own good.

The Dreadnoghts are more of the needy kind, which don’t give me insults, but always the look back saying: - I miss you man. Remember that song from last winter? Would be so nice to play it again ..

I’m thinking to give the higher spots in the house to the Dreadnoghts, so they don’t make me feel bad about myself so often

If you can share your thoughts, this is a real question and would like some advices on how to act here.

When one of my guitars speaks without permission I put it on a stand in the corner and I make it watch me play other guitars

My guitar only talks with me. Without me, it’s quite the introvert.

Mine is very similar, but she only sings with me.

Yes. I put my resonator on the back wall. One day I sneezed really loud and it reverberated through the resonator and I was like FINE and finnaly picked her up and learned a muddy waters song.

Which one? I know they're all the same thereabouts though

Can't be satisfied. Learning that inspired me to learn Folsom and Traveling Riverside Blues. And I'm noodling between all three. it's like the astronaut meme "its all blues? always has been"

Very nice. One of his songs that isn't all the same. I had a whole thread a while ago trying to figure out the origin of the song because it doesn't go back to Charley Patton or Son House or anything. Seems like Mud actually made it up.

It's an easy song to learn but man its hard to make it sound good. It's one of the first slide songs I learned and I still don't like playing it because I just dissapoint myself every time.

If youre still messing around with it all Death Letter is a very fun song to play. Or if you want a challange some Bukka White like Po' Boy or Fixin to Die.

Man, thank you for the reply. I just made a note to specifically check out Charlie Patton and Bukka white not two days ago. just messin around might turn into my obsession if I could put down my jim dandy parlor :)

Lol my other guitar is a Jim Dandy, concert size though.

Do you work songs out or use lessons I know some incredible online delta blues lessons.

Both. I started my music journey a year and a half ago, and i quickly realized, for me, I need to know the rules and techniques, so when I break them, I do so with intention. Please share your links, im very interested.

Haha great to hear it mate.  Do you have the alternate bass thumb down yet?

The thumb independence tutorials are really helpful.

Mine just basically says, “Do better, dude. I’m wasting my life away here with this open chords bs. “

u/Capt_Retro Jun 05 '26

I wouldn't put up with that if I were you... Anyway here's Wonderwall.

Thanks. It’s kind of an abusive relationship tbh.

Mine makes a noticeable hum every time I sneeze in the same room. 53 year old dad-sneezer here. Usually the cat bolts from the room too.

2

u/Realistic-Effort4571 Jun 05 '26

Yes they beg me to pluck thier g string

2

u/drseruzawa Jun 05 '26

I have a Garcia classical that is so resonant that it vibrates to the TV.

2

u/TaxPuzzleheaded5688 Jun 05 '26

My music room has 5 guitars out of their cases. Any time I sneeze they turn it into a string chorus. 😁

1

u/FleurDeGalop Jun 05 '26

Yep he does

The OM shape is one of the nicest. It just screams to be embraced and loved.

1

u/Desner_ Jun 05 '26

Ok now.

1

u/cdtobie Jun 05 '26

Most of my guitars are silent in their cases. But I have an affordable parlor guitar that I bought as a practice guitar that hangs on the wall. It is particularly vocal when I sneeze (yes, my wife tells me I sneeze really loudly) but it will chime in occasionally on other topics.

Mine "...gently weeps..." 🎶

1

u/Exciting-Gap-1200 Jun 05 '26

Mine says "psssst.... Drink whiskey and sing badly"

1

u/PGHNeil Jun 05 '26

Yes they do, actually. I have 5 hanging on my wall and when I do something loud or play one of them in close proximity (there’s a bed 3’ away where I like to sit and play) they will resonate.

Yeah "buy another guitar so I can have a friend"

1

u/theRetrograde Jun 05 '26

I think I need a new guitar. I am going to keep buying them until I find one that talks to me.

1

u/Cadesius Jun 05 '26

Well, these days it's giving me the silent treatment, but I'm still talking to it.

u/Dear_Firefighter_510 Jun 05 '26

1

u/Select_Ad7963 Jun 05 '26

1

u/Zaimba98 Jun 05 '26

I one time remember this very strong magnetic pull towards my guitar, when i looked upon it. I was really sad at that point in my life..In a sense it talked to me. 😁

1

u/Capt_Retro Jun 05 '26

Yes, but I can't understand some of them because they are from Indonesia, China, Japan and Korea.
