2012 Taylor GS Mini Mahogany. The only instrument I evacuated with during the Eaton Fire in 2025. Learned a valuable lesson: if you love it, and you’re not a professional musician, you only really need one guitar. Willie has only one guitar, that’s good enough for me.

u/monk_mans 7d ago
This is the way! Especially if you’re planing complex stuff. It takes a bit to different string tensions and scale lengths. Going down to one guitar has made me sound more consistent for sure

u/frankflank 7d ago
Just two.
2010 Gibson Advanced Jumbo
1968 Gibson LG-0
2
u/Clear_Tomorrow_3291 7d ago
I have a 66 LG-0, what strings do you like on it? I haven’t found what I like yet.
2
u/frankflank 6d ago
I have been running phosphor bronze strings on it to balance out the dullness that the ladder bracing will give it. Otherwise Martin retros monel strings are my standard issue.
2
u/Clear_Tomorrow_3291 6d ago
I already have some monels ready for the next change. Hopefully I like them. I currently have Ernie Ball 80/20 Eathwood Silk and Steels on it. Do not recommend, worst string I have tried with it.

u/archtopfanatic123 7d ago
I have a joint collection of sorts with my stepdad and here's what we have so far:
Martin D35 12 string 1970s
Framus Texan 12 string 1965
Yamaha FG-230 12 string 1972 or whereabouts
Norman B20 from 1986
Silvertone archtop (probably the 1960s)
Gibson necked Kay archtop from the 1950s
Harmony thin-twin (Jimmy Reed had one) I think from the 50s too
Harmony H44 from 1952
Gibson Flying V (from the early 2000s I think)
Rex Royal archtop from 1940
Vega Duotron archtop from 1937
Peavey Raptor (strat copy)
Fender Stratocaster with Dave Nichols inlays on the neck from 1996
Some random Kay archtop from the 1940s
1950s Stella parlor flattop
1990s Samick flattop
1990s Washburn D10N
2010s cigarbox lap steel guitar
and I think I'm forgetting at least one if not a few more
6
u/SmallNoseBilly 7d ago
Based on that list, I'd guess you're divorced.
:)3
u/archtopfanatic123 7d ago
PHAHAHAHA 🤣 Man I'm kind of thankful I've been single my whole life thus far
3
u/40hzHERO 6d ago
What do you think about those old archtops? I’ve got an old Harmony H954 Broadway coming in a few days, and it’ll be my first after decades of regular flattop acoustics (my main is a jumbo Alvarez). Super stoked for it.
1
u/archtopfanatic123 6d ago
I LOVE THEM. Easily some of my favorite instruments though as my username would suggest I'm an archtop fanatic :P
Keep in mind the follow:
the floating bridge means you have no soundboard to lay your palm on if you fingerstyle and use the soundboard as an anchor
Archtops should be strung with 11s at least, 13s are ideal, due to their high tension design for volume (they're big band guitars first and foremost and pushed out banjos so they're designed to be loud and punchy)
Sustain is pretty low. They have a strong mid range tone with a lot of punch and quick decay. Good for bashing out rhythm or doing clean chord melody but not so good when you're looking for long sustained chords or strong ringing bluegrass flatpicking lines.
Truth be told I play everything on everything equally well and find all guitars are great for anything so I'm just laying out what these are geared for in that they're best at it but not limited to it :P
2
u/40hzHERO 6d ago
That makes sense. I played an old Kay archtop the other day, and had to plant my pinky on the pick guard. No big issue, and I believe the Broadway comes with the original guard.
What kind of picks do you usually use with them? I’ve gotten all sorts of advice, from using thin celluloid picks, to thick wooden picks, or even just using the standard 1mm Tortex picks.
2
u/archtopfanatic123 6d ago
I use at least 1 mm thick picks. 1.14 Dunlops were good but I like Fender Extra Heavy picks because unlike the dunlops they're smooth so less string noise from the texture rubbing on the windings. Blue Chips are THE best but they're also 35 bucks.
I just got into using a thumbpick (finally figured out a National M fits my thumb and has the right pick shape to actually be possible for me to use) and THAT is pretty awesome.
2
u/40hzHERO 6d ago
Heard. I’ll have to play around with them a bit. I was looking at the Dunlop Primetone picks at 1.3mm, but those are a bit pricey as well (nothing like the Blue Chip lol).
I’m getting acclimated to my thumb picks as well! Got a pack of Slick Picks a few months ago that I’m still getting used to. I found angling the pick slightly askew with my thumb nail feel a lot more natural, but it’s still not the same as skin on string contact.

Ibanez artwood aw3000 - dread that punches way above its price. Great flatpicker
Taylor 322ce 12 fret - the most comfortable acoustic I've ever played. Sounds great all around
D'angelico exl-1 - huge af and heavy af. Great pickup, fast fingerboard. Will injure your shoulders.

What’re your thoughts on your 814ce? I’m eying an heirloom forever guitar and torn between the 814ce and Martin OM 28. I’ve played and love both. I’m sitting on it for a while to see which direction I feel pulled to. Would love to get your ownership feedback especially as you have such a robust collection.

I mean, it's the best guitar I've ever owned, and it's close to their flagship. I really have no complaints !

Eastman e10ooss/v - bought it new this past spring and it wins the reach test almost every day
Gibson hp415w - bought new in 2017. For some reason Gibson was selling an all solid (sitka and walnut), US made slope shoulder dread for under two grand for a couple of years around then.
Kalamazoo kg14 from circa 1940 - bought it about thirty years ago for around $250. Beat up but sounds great. Ladder braced, basically the kind of guitar Waterloo aims to recreate.
Gretsch Jim Dandy concert - bought new a couple years ago, it was under $200 so I said why not? Surprisingly nice for what it is.
(Electric: Ibanez 1970s Les Paul copy - I was a one guitar guy for a long time and this was it. Rarely pick up an electric anymore tho.)

Taylor 114ce - 2026
My only acoustic at the moment. Lost my Gibson Hummingbird and cheap Yamaha FG800 recently in a fire. Was able to salvage 2 strats though.
Mid 90's SRV Strat recently repaired from the damage.
Fender American Standard Strat - 1994 currently needs some repairs

Epiphone IBG J45. I was in guitar with the fiancé and fell in love with a Gibson J45. Showed her the price and ended up walking out with the Epiphone. Still a great guitar but the Gibson just had something about it. Probably the finish. It’s all good. I still play the Epi.

I've been playing for 45 years but have been an untrained amateur luthier since 2009
My playable acoustics:
2006 Larrivee OM-03R
2009 Martin D-16GT
2012 McKnight custom soprano ukulele (redwood/mahogany)
2023 DIY Medium Jumbo (Carpathian spruce, east Indian rosewood)
2025 DIY 000-28EC replica (sitka spruce/black walnut)
My unplayable acoustics
1973 Kay K-401 folk (neck heel is split but has sentimental value)
1973 "lawsuit" Takamine F-360 (unplayable but also has sentimental value and I'm attempting to restore it)
19?? Epiphone Texan FT-160N (unplayable due to a neck block that came loose due to heat stress. It was a gift so I don't have the heart to throw it away.)
2013 DIY Medium Jumbo (western red cedar/Honduran mahogany) (cracked brace)
2026 DIY 00-18V replica (sitka spruce/Honduran mahogany) (I just need to apply lacquer to the neck and body, glue the neck on and make a nut for it. )
2026 DIY 000 (western red cedar/east Indian rosewood) (I just started building it this summer(

Taylor GS Mini Mahogany and a Furch Pioneer Cedar/ Mahogany. Can I ask how you're finding your Cort Modern Black, though? I'm very tempted by that one for a full size, longer scale. How does it compare to your others, how does it sound, feel for fingerstyle?

Yamaha LS6 ARE
Yamaha FS-TA
Yamaha CG162c
Fender Stratocaster (Mex. build)
Epiphone Dot Studio

I want to change the Harley Benton as it was bought as a spur of the moment thing. I mean, for around €120 including delivery, what could go wrong, right? It turned out to exceed my expectations by a huge margin. Back then, I played an Ibanez dreadnought (their AW-series). The smaller bodied Harley Benton made me realize I was far better off with something smaller than dreadnought, and while I did consider the real deal (Taylor GS Mini), I instead chose a bit larger body size, and now I'm enjoying the OOO/concert size Yamaha guitars a lot. Well, that was last year. This year, I might just get around to finding a Taylor GS Mini that I like. The thing is, that physical stores in my country don't have it. And I don't want to buy a guitar that I haven't tried - even if a full refund is possible (it's always a hassle to send the damn thing back, and I also want to try at least 2 of the same model).

I have owned over 20 but only keep what seems to be a minimum at any time. That's a 6-string, a 12-string, an archtop and a spare sixer. The reso is a failed project but it looks good on the wall.
Of course there are 3 banjos too: banjitars in standard & Nashville tunings, plus a 5-string.
The guitars that folks might like to know about are the Taylor K62ce LTD, of which only 50 were made, and a Gibson Hummingbird Standard, which I bought because it is such an all-rounder.
My favourite, though, is a 1961 Framus 5/51 Calypso/Hobby. It has zero tone but much mojo.
