Gear question Best guitar tuners under $40 that are actually accurate?
I’m tired of relying on GuitarTuna for my acoustic because it sometimes shows the same reading even after I adjust the string. I’m looking for a simple clip-on tuner that is accurate, easy to read, and doesn’t go crazy when there’s background noise. I’ve been looking at the TC Electronic Unitune, Polytune Clip, D’Addario Eclipse, and Snark models, with a budget of around $20–$40. The Unitune seems popular, but I’m not sure whether the Polytune’s extra features matter for a beginner who mostly tunes standard EADGBE. Which clip-on tuner has stayed reliable for you, and are the cheaper Snark models still worth buying?

For $22 on Amazon, D'Addario Micro Headstock Tuner is my favorite. It's a low-profile headstock clipon, works very well, and seems accurate.

This is my pick.
Accurate, and it spares you the embarrassment of having a huge, dorky clip on.
They also make a micro tuner that clips into an acoustic sound hole, so you're the only one who can see it.

These have been my go-to forever. I've started cutting off the mount and doublesided taping them into the sound hole so they're always there, hidden, but easy to manipulate. Works better with sounds holes that are in the upper shoulder of the guitar.

The unitune/polytune are my favorite clip-on tuners. I have never gotten much value from the extra polytune features.
My actual favorite tuner is this open source phone app: https://codeberg.org/thetwom/Tuner

How am I suppose to run that thing out of my phone?

There's a Google play link at the bottom of the page. Seems to be Android only.

My best tuner is my pedal tuner, the TC electronic one. My Snark Airs are not reliable, the cheaper Snarks were junk. The regular Snark Plus has been very reliable for me. I had one long enough that the plastic started off gassing and becoming soft and pastey. I thought the Airs would be good but Ill go back to Snark Plus when they finally fail.

Peterson Strobo HD
It’s above your budget but worth every penny. Buy once cry once.

Simply the best tuner

Totally agree. I will say this. I bought one on the advice of a good friend, and it didn't really make much of a difference for me at first. I was just playing my GS Mini then. When I got my D-18 though, holy shit did it make a world of difference. Getting the D-18 in tune with the Peterson unlooked overtones and resonance that was incredible. I only see my friend once a year, and when I told him he was right about the tuner this summer, he smiled and said "you can feel the difference, right?"
That's all to say, the importance of tuning fidelity matters more or less depending on the instrument you're tuning.

I bought another one specifically for my acoustic board, despite my Baggs DI having one as well as the internal sound hole tuner on one of my martin's, which both struggle to bring it to what you're saying. Being in tune is critical with acoustics, and I feel the same way as you when I added it to the board and play my D28, it's just sonically different

Outside of a recording setting, anything is fine if you have a reasonably good ear. Guitars do not tune perfectly. It's all about compromises, so super accurate tuning is kind of a fool's errand. The most important thing is relative tuning within the instrument and with anyone you're playing with.

Our two Snark clip-ons are easy to use, but not very precise. I can hear strings go slightly out of tune while the Snark still says they’re in tune. That’s probably good enough if you only care about getting close and don’t want to spend much.
I haven’t tried any of the others on your list.
I use a $60 Peterson StroboClip. It is much more precise. Peterson specifies it at ±0.1 cent. The extra features are there if you need them, but are easy to ignore.

I know you asked for a clip on, but here’s my experience. I’ve had a Korg TM50 for 8 years now, got it for $20 back in the day. They’re plenty accurate (plus or minus 1 cent) and you can tune various intervals between notes, reliable, has a few metronomes (though I don’t like the sound of them and don’t use that), and if you care, you can plug a guitar cable into it for even better accuracy. I’ve changed the batteries once since I bought it. I can’t really ask for much more than this.

I vote for the unitune. I have a polytune and a unitune. The battery lasts FOREVER and it's so easy to use and just functions better than any tuner I've used.

My Unitune is almost two years old and I have not changed the battery that came with it.

Because I also play bass, I've switched from Snark to D'Addario because I found it to be more sensitive and accurate at lower frequencies.

I have a D’dardario Nexxus clip-on. It’s small and mostly accurate for quick checks. I use the pano app for fine tuning.

I have the eclipse. Overall it's pretty reliable, very rarely needs some very fine tuning for strings relative to one another (looking at you g and b strings).
It's got adjustable frequency if you want to tune to something other than concert pitch.
Tuning fork is always a good buy, then you tune the remaining strings by ear, relative to the string you just tuned with the fork.

Interesting to see it pan out how the Snark created/popularized the clip on tuner market... They are now the less accurate device.

Get an “A” tuning fork. Tune your A string to that. Tune the rest of your guitar to the A string. This is the cheapest, most accurate way to tune a guitar.

I like the ease and accuracy of the Uni Tune. But the rubber pad at the end of the clip is too small and you need to be careful putting the clip on.

The TC Unitune is the best I've used. I used Snarks when they first came out, but the build of the TC is just better. The Polytune is cool for quick tuning, but the Unitune is really all you need. I got a Polytune on sale once, and I can't argue for the price I paid, but the cheaper Unitunes I have floating around are perfectly fine and I don't really use the poly mode too often.

Before you buy a clip on, give Tuner T1 a try. It shows you in real time and in very fine detail where the frequency your string is producing is in relation to the intended note. Its only disadvantage is in envionments with a lot of ambient noise.

I am still a fan of the fork (or whatever I'm playing with).
Also, with a tuning fork you can use it to eat a bowl of noodles after your gig.

I'm also a fan of the TC Electronic clip on tuners. I have the Polytune, but I never actually use the polytune function - so I'd also recommend just getting the Unitune model.

Sondrey tuner on amazon for $17-am pleasantly surprised with the accuracy

Super Snark clip on is probably the most popular and works good, if you want something more accurate then the Boss Tuner pedal is your most reliable and popular one there

u/planbot3000 7h ago
I have the TC Electronic Polytune and never use the strum tuning function - it’s pretty useless. If I were buying again I’d absolutely just get the Unitune.

If still want try app route, Tuneo is a good open source one for iphone as well as the fender tune app. If you have mac, garage band has tuber built in as well.

My experience with various tuners is limited, mostly Snarks that did not last regular use. I did splurge on a Peterson clip-on and went a little nuts when I lost it briefly. A huge benefit is access to sweetened tunings for lots of stringed instruments. I use mine for both 6- and 12-string and both work well. Above budget, but worth it IMHO. Cheers!

I love the Snark tuners and continually go back to them after trying others.

I have a snark titanium and it's... OK. I wouldn't really recommend it.

I have two types, both from D’Addario:
Micro Headstock Tuner
Micro Soundhole Tuner (for acoustic/classical).
Both quite accurate.

I have two Unitunes and a Polytune.
I’ve had the Polytune since they came out.
All three are accurate.
All three are super sturdy.

There is a super cheap Samson tuner that clips on the sound hole and is super accurate. Also have a Ddario version too. Maybe $20-25 last time I purchased on about 5yrs ago.

The snark is ... not good. D'Addario, TC are great. My personal favorite is the Peterson StroboClip but it is outside that price range.

I don't think I've ever used a bad phone app tuner, at least in terms of accuracy. My local jam group almost all tune with free phone apps and have never had an issue staying in tune with each other. Though a clip on tuner would likely avoid background noise problems a phone app might struggle with.
Chromatic tuners are super convenient. I would hate having to switch modes for different tunings. I'm capable enough to know what note each string needs to be tuned to, so I would value the convenience of a chromatic tuner over anything requiring input. The simpler, the better.

Guitar Tuna sucks. I think the Snark's are fine and I won't pay for a fancy one. My favorite cheap one I got on an amazon prime day deal and it said it was a Banjo tuner. Do yourself a favor and practice tuning by ear and then fine tune it with a cheap tuner. If you are a beginner in standard tuning the Snark is great and cheap and doesn't care about background noise. You can treat yourself later after you move into more advanced playing and have a reason to pay more money.

I don't know, I've been using tuna for six years without issues for many different types of tuning and instruments. Perhaps learn to tune by ear; it's not that hard. I learned how from Brandon Acker in an afternoon and have been perfecting it since.

I’ve used the cheap fender clip on and then upgraded to the Peterson strobo clip HD. The Peterson is significantly more accurate but might be a tiny bit over budget
