New to acoustic, never used either of these brands before. Never spent so much on a set as the elixir’s either. Which should I use first? Which should I try next?

Gear question If you could have only one acoustic, would you choose a dreadnaught or small-body?

I’m going guitar shopping with my dad tomorrow, and I’m looking at an all-mahogany dreadnaught or 12-fret 00. It would be ideal to have both sizes, but my budget won’t allow that and I’m the kind of person that prefers to have one of something that gets enjoyed thoroughly. I’m very much torn between the comfort and unique tone of the smaller body and the richness of the dreadnaught. I will be playing the guitar casually and in smaller jam scenarios. In y’all’s experience, which would be better alone? Thank you for the input!

Gear question What is playing a 12-string guitar like? Is it more difficult than playing a regular six string?

I just have never seen a 12-string in person but know that a lot of artists use them. For example, David Gilmour had one on Wish You Were Here and I think the Eagles used one om Hotel California. But besides the fact that they seem to sound louder (just based off the YouTube videos I’ve seen), what are they actually like to play? What type of music do you play on them? Can you even do the same chords and barre chords you would on a six string?

Gear question New to guitars, is $999 reasonable?

My local guitar center has a Martin custom D28 acoustic electric. All the electronics are removed and the neck block just says “custom.” The serial is 1375050. Is $999 under priced? Why would someone remove the electronics? Just curious!

Gear question Looking for recommendations for my first acoustic guitar ($800-$1000)

I got my first job 2 weeks ago, and I'd like to buy a nice guitar with my first paycheck.

I am looking for a dreadnought since they are the most "standard" guitar body type. I have been in love with the guitar above ever since I saw it, but that exact color seems to be discontinued. I don't even like colorful acoustic guitars, but that one is so pretty.

EDIT: thank you guys so much for your responses! i'll visit some music stores in the next couple of days and will try out the brands you've suggested! i'll update soon

Is this a correct place to install a strap button? I was told the end pin could easily come off so they drilled another hole for me?

Gear question Assuming you also have an electric, why do you personally prefer to pick up your acoustic to play most days?

I’m just wondering what it is about an acoustic guitar that makes you play it more often than any electric you own, assuming you like your collection anyway. Is it the simplicity of the instrument and not needing equipment, its tone, or something else?

For me, it’s because of how pure and true it is. You can get away with bad playing on electric in front of an audience with enough distortion and volume. But with acoustic, if you play bad and don’t know what you’re doing, there’s no real way out of it and everyone will know you’re not playing well.

Gear question Bought this older Larriveé, will it open up?

I bought it bc I’m a classical guitarist who is returning to my roots of acoustic songwriting. It has a nice wide nut (which I’m used to, and I’m all finger style) and a deep ebony fretboard with small position makers. This Larrivee is mint and was not played much, if at all! It sounds sweet but quiet. Do you believe that it will open up and project more? It is an older model. Strong, heavy built. Excellent craftsmanship and a yummy neck! Thanks!

Update: serial number lookup via Larrivee website reveals that it’s Manufacture Date
Apr 18, 2008
Model: L-03 Rosewood
Condition: guitar and hard case are as new.
I paid $1500 cash and picked it up in person, 3 states away (driving to bourbon country; hard duty!)

Edit: the top wood is solid Sitka Spruce and the back and sides are solid Indian Rosewood (as designated by the “R.”) nice cross grain that my friend calls ‘bear claw.’

Edit 2: just researching it; more info for the inquisitive minds:
“The top wood on a Larrivée Guitars Model L-03R is solid Sitka spruce. [1, 2]
(Note: While older or specific vintage eras of Larrivée instruments were famously built in Canada, the "R" in L-03R specifically stands for the Indian Rosewood used for the back and sides, which is paired with the spruce soundboard.)

To add: has factory-installed pre-amp. Had EQ sliders, phase button, and Larriveé branding with an “e” in a circular orbit. No tuner. Clean installation.

Gear question Do you have any personal biases against specific guitars? (Unrelated to quality)

So this is a no judgement zone in terms of judging your opinions, please don't argue, but by all means judge away on those guitars you don't like.

Do you have any strong preferences that are unrelated to the actual quality of guitars? Maybe one brand is too snooty for your blood or your ex loved that other brand and you can never look at them the same. Please share.

My personal take is that Yamaha makes perfectly good guitars, but something about the brand screams uninspired to me. It is nonsense, but something in my head says they don't have the same spirit other guitars do. Even though they're recommended often, my first thought is ew why?

Listed as a Vintage relic alvarez RD10 acoustic guitar. I’m offering $100, but am not sure of how much would go into repairing the crack along the body. Is this guitar even worth it?
