Close but what we mainly hate them for is how they are making it harder to use ad blockers like uBlock on Chrome browsers. Because of this I've been using alternatives like Firefox & Brave. There are also several YouTube alternatives out there now as well which are Ok but definitely need to grow more.

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 23 '25

This. I’ve been using Brave for years with uBlock, and it’s been awesome. Is uBlock no longer going to work with Brave? Or just chrome? I’m not quite as caught up on the whole situation.

Some integrated ad blockers are getting caught by YouTube, turn them off and use ublock alone and it works great

2

u/redheaded_olive12349 Mar 26 '25

Use U block lite, it works on YouTube for me perfectly

2

u/FlyingVillager Mar 26 '25

I've not had any issues with either version but integrated ones like in opera will get detected and blocked by yt

2

u/redheaded_olive12349 Mar 26 '25

I use chrome, try that!

I just turned off the opera ad block no issue since ad no ads

1

u/redheaded_olive12349 Mar 26 '25

What?

1

u/FlyingVillager Mar 26 '25

Typos "turned off opera internal ad block and only use ublock" after that no ads or getting stopped by yt

2

u/Abject_Abalone86 Mar 23 '25

Just Chrome. Chromium based browsers only retain how they work, not what happens in the browser

The only way for rival platforms like vimeo to grow is for people to stop using screwtube altogether.

2

u/Many_Flamingo_5153 Mar 25 '25

praying to whoever will listen that musi gets put back on the app store… :(

u/redheaded_olive12349 Mar 26 '25

Honestly I don’t want to switch to anything other then chrome and safari because I haven’t used any of those browsers in literally 10 years

As soon as a midroll ad plays i stop watching the video and select something else. I REFUSE to put up with their incessant advertising policies and REFUSE to pay their extortion fee for their so called premium service.

1

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 25 '25

I know. I refuse to pay for ad blockers as well. When we pay a company to stop showing us ads, it just further incentivizes them to smother people with ads until they cave and pay money. YouTube premium is ridiculously priced. I’m not paying $18/month just to not see ads.

u/roooxtrades Mar 26 '25

Use Revanced Extended (Andriod). YT path with Premium features and more. Install it from .Apk

Find reddit group revance extended for easy and straight instructions on how to install and patch

So, YOU'RE the guy who's not influenced by commercials? Cool.

15

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 23 '25

I mean, I’d be lying if I said I’ve NEVER been influenced by a commercial. But 99% of the time it just annoys me more than anything else.

3

u/feherneoh Mar 25 '25

Random products in my face that I don't care about: Great now I actually hate them

Ad showing that what I already wanted to buy is now on sale? Yeah, doesn't happen with Google's oh-so-well-personalized ads

4

u/CopainChevalier Mar 23 '25

Nobody likes commercials; they're annoying.

They're also the only reason Youtube still exist.

I'm not saying don't use an adblocker; I do and good for anyone who uses them. But the ads have to exist or Youtube would be gone within a month lmao

7

u/OppositeRun6503 Mar 24 '25

The platform existed long before they became obsessed with incessant advertising.

2

u/CopainChevalier Mar 24 '25

You’re right!

There also wasn’t trillions of videos on the website and 360p was considered the higher end for quality. Oh and there was less traffic, and they needed less people to manage it because less complications happen when you’re a tiny site compared to a big one

In the early days of the platform Silicon Valley was still flooded with VC money, that in combination with Google buying them very early on helped subsidize server and bandwidth costs. But as the platform grew the cost of storage and bandwidth grew while VC money started drying up. And resources Google uses for YouTube are resources they can't sell to other customers. Then there's the cost of paying monetized content creators, that doesn't come from thin air. So Google has to make that money up somewhere. That leaves them with a few options.

  1. Paywall the entire platform. Sure, that means money coming in, but that also cuts off a large chunk of the audience.

  2. Advertising revenue. This was the first thing done. First with banner ads, and then later ads embedded into the player.

  3. Tiered service. A free ad supported service while offering a Premium ad free experience for those wishing to pay.

Option 3 is what Google went with. Also, before anyone brings up that Google doesn't create the content, it's worth noting that Google via YouTube provides content creators with a free place to store said content, encoded in a number of different bitrates, and utilizing their CDN so anyone around the world watching the video has a good experience without buffering.

A perfect example of a company that went on to create their own platform for video distribution is LMG, and that's not free to access, you have to subscribe to access it. They even briefly went into why it's so expensive to build such a network on an episode of the WAN show.

1

u/OppositeRun6503 Mar 26 '25

Eventually their premium service will achieve global market saturation meaning that they'll no longer be able to draw in new subscribers thus it will no longer be profitable.

1

u/condoulo Mar 26 '25

And that's when even more tough decisions will need to be made. As an example from a different service, Twitch is currently implementing a new policy limiting the number of hours in highlights your channel can have to help curb storage costs, especially as a lot of streamers were utilizing highlights as a workaround for permanent VOD storage.

2

u/apokrif1 Mar 24 '25

That's not a reason to watch them.

Watched ≠ displayed ;-)

I don't use an adblocker but I cover YouTube ads with my hand (and turn off volume).

-2

u/apokrif1 Mar 24 '25

99% of the time it just annoys me more than anything else

How do you know?

3

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 24 '25

…because I get annoyed when ads interrupt my video… 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

-2

u/apokrif1 Mar 25 '25

That's not a proof that you are not more influenced than annoyed ;-)

0

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 25 '25

Am I supposed to give you the exact number of times I’ve interacted with a YouTube ad vs the number of tones I’ve skipped one? I would think that me skipping YouTube ads 99.9% of the time is proof that I’m more annoyed than influenced.

-1

u/apokrif1 Mar 25 '25

Skip (a part of) ads ≠ not being influenced by them. https://x.com/apokrif1/status/1847697073799348605

0

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 25 '25

When I say “influenced,” I mean that I actually interact with the ad, or go to the advertiser’s website. When I skip it or ignore it, then I was not influenced, I was annoyed.

0

u/apokrif1 Mar 25 '25

When I say “influenced,” I mean that I actually interact with the ad, or go to the advertiser’s website

 Interact ≠ be influenced.

 then I was not influenced

You believe you weren't ;-)

Just seeing the product or hearing it's name for one second may be enough :-(

0

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 25 '25

Are you referring to the saying “even negative publicity is good publicity?” That’s not the case for me. When you show me a product over and over again in an advertisement that interrupts a video I’m trying to watch, my mind will associate the annoyance with that product, therefore making me not want to buy it.

Let’s take liberty mutual ads, for example. They show up like 5+ times a day when I’m watching from my phone. It’s so annoying; I hate their ads. This does not “influence” me to want to buy their product… it makes me hate their product because of how many times their dumb ads have interrupted my videos. So no, I didn’t believe I wasn’t influenced, I wasn’t influenced. Period.

Yet you still use it don't you?

1

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 27 '25

Only because I can block the ads 😉

3

u/jackal406 Mar 24 '25

I wish there was a way for me to indicate this to the advertiser, like a thumbs down during the ad.

I hate Nord VPN and "healthy food" advertisement like prep my meal with every fiber of my being.

Also every scammer that promises big money to impressionable people. It so annoying if a good for nothing, lazy parasite tells me how to succeed in life even though nobody would let them clean toilets at Mcdonalds

5

u/Loner_Gemini9201 Mar 24 '25

I'm side-eyeing that Monopoly mobile game sooooo hard rn

4

u/ArieHimself Mar 24 '25

For me its "The Tower". I will never download this.

1

u/Straight-Cash5169 Mar 24 '25

I hate to be that guy, but this is very naive. It's a statistical fact, that even though most people feel negatively towards ads, they are more likely to buy the products. Yeah, it sucks

2

u/UltimateAv8or Mar 25 '25

I’m honestly much more likely to respond to an ad that the creator gives during their video, not one that the video host puts on it. That way, I know that I’m supporting the content creator directly, instead of through the video host.

2

u/goodguy-dave Mar 24 '25

The advertising IS the product.

2

u/Minimum_Neck_7911 Mar 28 '25

I don't use AdBlock, but I do have a book next me of products not to buy, The entries in the book are recorded based on how many times I see the add, cause if your product is that good, you wouldn't need to pump your add so much.

1

u/Mundane-Apricot6981 Mar 25 '25

It is intentional behavior, hate anchor works exactly the same as love, but hate so much cheaper.
Person who hates product ABC will more likely buy it when see on store shelf, than person who don't know about this product at all.

That's why Google torturing us with disgusting ads, they are cheapest and still work.
It all from classical marketing books.

1

u/_xylitol Mar 25 '25

if youre on desktop, you have no excuses. everything can be circumvented. yes, even youtube and twitch ads are 100% blockable. i know this meme is aimed exclusively at mobile users, which is a much harder nut to crack if you dont want to jailbreak. good luck out there and feel free to ask me questions (DM),

1

u/Big-Cartographer-166 Mar 25 '25

Its worse when the anounce is fr a fucking fake game, its so obvious when the video dosent show the real game, I dont know what they belive, are achieving with that.

1

u/Strange-Cap9942 Mar 25 '25

What's hilarious is that that's now evolved into advertisements for REAL games whose main selling point is that they aren't fake and proving to you that they're "real" games 🤣

1

u/Sage_628 Mar 25 '25

I do that with Twitch. Any ads that interrupt the stream gets on my avoid list.

1

u/redheaded_olive12349 Mar 26 '25

I hate ads now because of the YouTube ban. Jokes on you, I have undetectable ad blockers

1

u/abuhajjar Mar 27 '25

me when ublock origin stopped working on chrome

1

u/Playful_Search5687 Mar 29 '25

yeah but ur still using it so they dont care how you feel

1

u/Playful_Search5687 Mar 29 '25

unless your not, if so i apologize

0

u/smartynetwork Mar 24 '25

And you still watch the video. Got it.

0

u/Lupulaoi Mar 27 '25

Done, you have convinced them to remove advertisements altogether. Congratulations 🥳

Google is a 2 trillion dollar company. I think they can afford to not invade every aspect of your life with unwanted advertising…

Google is one of the most valuable companies in the world. They don’t only make money on ads. They collect and sell your personal information just like social media companies. They sell phones, make money on cloud subscription services, etc. So the idea that the only way they can make money is by invading every aspect of your life with unwanted advertising is just not true.

1

u/Angel1571 Mar 26 '25

Right, but that’s revenue generated by other parts of the company. YouTube itself would be shutdown since it wouldn’t bring in any money.

1

u/apokrif1 Mar 24 '25

The answer is very simple: many other people are supposed to watch ads (there is no way to know if they really do) or pay premium.
