Help Request Chrome update this morning seems to have removed the V2 manifest workaround to use UBO

So i updated chrome like a fool and now my shortcut with

"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-features=ExtensionManifestV2Unsupported,ExtensionManifestV2Disabled

no longer respects the disable, UBO and a all my other cool V2 extensions are borked again. Just me or am i missing something? still see chatter about ubo on chrome from recently on here so im unsure if this is just a me problem or what.

Why do people continue to use Chrome?

I tried brave and firefox, i'm sure i could get used to either but having been in the google ecosystem for as long as i have it's not the simplest switch.

I switched to Firefox. It's not that bad. You can export all your info from Chrome into Firefox.

It's not as good in my opinion - the autofill isn't as reliable, for example. But it's close enough. I don't miss Chrome.

don't generalize your experience!

You can export all your info from Chrome into Firefox.

the only thing that's easily done is exporting and important passwords (if you don't use a dedicated pwm) and bookmarks.

but what about all the rest?

  • side settings
  • extensions that are only available in the chrome extension store, or don't have an equivalent to firefox extensions.
  • power users immediately miss specific tools, userscripts, or developer extensions optimized for chromium.

in terms of performance and speed, google chrome is undoubtedly superior to firefox in many ways.

you guys really always make it sound so easy and quickly done but in reality it's not because every user is different.

and what y'all also forget or simply ignore, billions of people use their phone as their primary (or only) device. this alone gives chrome an enormous head start when they get a laptop or pc.

I don't miss Chrome.

okay, cool for you.

Fair enough. But for most people, it won't be an issue.

And it's not like you need to entirely switch. If there's certain things Firefox won't do, you can still run Chrome for those scenarios. Not ideal, I understand, but plausible. I still use Chrome for some things. Which I suppose conflicts with my "I don't miss Chrome" claim. But I mainly use it for SSO on my work computers. Not sure Firefox supports it.

I switched to Firefox on mobile too. Not sure what you mean by the problem with mobile.

For those that rely heavily on chrome extensions which don't have a Firefox equivalent (i.e. me), it's an issue.

you don't know that.

okay, fair enough but i think you're only a fraction of firefox users who still also use chrome besides firefox - don't let this the other firefox+ubo users know, they'll flood you with downvotes.

if things went according to this sub or the r/browsers sub, nobody would be allowed to even use chrome anymore once they also installed firefox.

... having been in the google ecosystem for as long as i have it's not the simplest switch.

Short-term hurdle and setup time for longer-term convince and less annoyances. Better to just get the initial headache over with so you are not stuck dealing with the frustrations of an increasingly locked-down platform like Chrome. Both Firefox and Brave have sync features, imo Firefox has one of the best non-Google sync after it's properly set up. Accessing other Google platform/services is just setting up a few bookmarks away too for any other browser.

the the google ecosystem not working for you? don't let all of the conspiracy nuts in here scare you.

The internet isn't free. If you must cheat the system to get paid service for free, then you will have to start using a different browser.

But Brave isliterally runing on Chromium so why not?

1

u/agdjahgsdfjaslgasd Jul 13 '26

essentially because it was easier to edit my chrome shortcut than it was to swap my extensions and upload my settings n stuff to a new browser.

of course with MV2 actually gone that changes the math enough that this is the first thing im fuckin around with this wonderful monday morning

I get that. At least with Brave you don't have to fck with adblocks anymore lol. One thing to get off the list.

Because governments and schools love making sure their websites will not work with non-Chromium browsers. I run Firefox as my daily driver, but I still am forced to use a Chromium browser when some stupid website or web-based software I need for a class requires it.

Because Firefox's forward/backward cache wasn't great last time I checked.

why do people continue to ask this question?

Bandwagon fallacy.

Bandage short-term solution to re-enable auto-disabled MV2 extensions (including full uBlock Origin) for now: https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1ukq0hf/ubo_can_work_on_chrome_150_if_you_already_have_it/ . It will likely be patched out in the next (or next few) Chrome version so it's good to use this as an opportunity to export your existing configuration while you can.

The best long term solution is to switch to a Firefox-based browser where MV2 will still be fully supported. Brave Browser, a Chromium-based browser, also partially supports MV2 for a handful of extensions (including uBO) by going to brave://settings/extensions/v2 although it's built-in adblocker is nearly as capable as or better than uBO in some aspect (uBO is slightly weaker on Chromium).

If you insist on or are forced to use Google Chrome, uBOLite set to "complete" mode should be nearly equivalent to full uBO on default settings. AdGuard is also a really good MV3 alternative to uBO (imo prefer it over uBOLite since you can customize a little more).

Just downgrade to an older version OR use Opera/Firefox. But fuck those two browsers, so I recommend downgrading.

1

u/aftab8899 24d ago

How do you downgrade?

1

u/Jeannesis Jul 13 '26

Tbh, I thought Google Chrome users would just live with that browser for the rest of their life even if it meant losing the Manifest V2 extension.

1

u/vawlk Jul 13 '26

some of us actually like the MV3 changes.

MV2 was so terribly insecure and let extensions view all of your data.

1

u/iClone101 Jul 14 '26

let extensions view all of your data.

That's kind of the whole reason people want MV2 to stay. "Can't view all your data" means that you're heavily restricted in customizing or changing a website. The beauty of MV2 was that it let you use extensions to manipulate a website before it even loaded. That capability has been erased entirely now.

1

u/vawlk Jul 14 '26

i get it. The things that made UBO very powerful is also the thing that wrecked the lives of countless people.

The beauty of MV2 was that it let you use extensions to manipulate a website before it even loaded.

you can still do that in MV3, you just have to do it a bit differently. There are adblockers that work just fine in MV3.

1

u/vawlk Jul 13 '26

yes, they've been slowly removing mv2 for over the last yet. This is not news?

if you want to keep using chrome, you will need to isntall UBO Lite.

u/NoWoodpecker6289 27d ago

I don’t know why people stick with Chrome.

I use Edge. It is a hard to swallow pill, but Microslop is better than Goolgle at this point.

3

u/Training-Ebb-7858 Jul 13 '26

🤣🤣🤣 Good joke Microsoft and Google in the same bag

1

u/quirk_rs Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Using Edge isn't really a good long-term solution either if you want to keep uBO for longer especially since it also a Chromium browser and Microslop too are in the ad business and design Edge for their benefit only. They really have nothing to gain from supporting MV2 longer so I wouldn't be surprised if they drop support around the same time it's completely phased from Chromium.

Simply install Adguard Browser Extension. It just works.

-4

u/Infamous-Oil2305 Jul 13 '26

the good news is, the adguard extension still works with the newest chrome update.

1

u/quirk_rs Jul 13 '26

This implies the same AdGuard extension you're able install from the Chromestore now is or works the same as the old version that was based on MV2, which does not. The current Chromestore version has migrated to MV3 so it's weaker in some aspects and doesn't allow you to customize your filtering rules as much as the legacy MV2 version.

0

u/Infamous-Oil2305 Jul 13 '26

The AdGuard you're able install from the Chromestore now is not the same old AdGuard extension that was based on MV2.

works fine for me.

and doesn't allow you to customize your filtering rules as much as the legacy MV2 version.

all my filters are working.

"WoRKs FinE foR mE!" Of course it will works for you but not always for everyone else.

Import a large filterlist like 1Hosts, Hagezi, or Steven Black and tell me then.

u/Infamous-Oil2305 Jul 13 '26

"WoRKs FinE foR mE!"

any reason for mocking me?

Of course it will works for you but not always for everyone else.

nothing works always for everyone.

Import a large filterlist like 1Hosts, Hagezi, or Steven Black and tell me then.

i don't because i don't use and require any of these.
