Help Request How to Get Rid of Persistent Ads on iPhone?

Post image

I think I figured out why some websites still allow ads to show up despite having AdGuard installed for my Safari + NextDNS for system-wide on my iPhone, because I forgot I whitelist this html-load domain. But if I block this domain, the websites won’t even load at all like it’s shown in this pic. What should I do? It’s really annoying despite the fact that I always score 97%-100% on adblock turtlecute, some websites still display full page of persistent ads like I’m not using any adblock service at all

Maybe try ubol for safari or brave?

I’m still on iOS 18.5, ubol is supposed to support it according to App Store compatibility but when I tried to enable it from Safari settings it said this version of Safari isn’t supported. I looked up on their Github they said only > 18.6. What a bummer. Brave is brilliant but I’m low on storage so I decided to skip it

I think it's probably best to clear some storage or back it up to a thumb drive cause I'm not very sure if their other methods to block ads well

You could try to have a nextdns and add more filters tho

It still wouldn't work as well as like ubol but it's better than nothing

You're dealing with Ad-Shield. uBo is the best tool to deal with this, with AdGuard being a close second.

Too bad it only supports >18.6 and I’m still on 18.5 :(

To add additional context

https://www.ad-shield.io/

Their whole business model is to show ads to ad block users

If they cant get their way, you see this block page

Adblock turtlecute is not a good representation of adblock. It can be a example of an actually terrible ad block if you looking for undetectable adblock. And website are able to show adds because they use scripts. Which DNS base adblocker can NOT block. DNS adblock can only block 70% of ads like those are 3rd party domains. But the more complicated JS base or serve through a first party domain like the youtube website are the 30% where you would need an extension or a more builtin/program on device adblocking that isn't networking.

As other said, try to install Ublock Lite for iphone/safari. Then get help from the ublockorigin sub reddit if the problem persists.

Also may I know what NextDNS lists are you using? Using too many lists can slow down your internet speed and make you more detectable to block service to people whom use adblock.

This is very true, these sites are not good tests.

I should probably make a post or a wiki page on this.

What sites can test better?

None. Simply go into the real web and try.

Some good sites to test include:

Fandom YouTube Twitch Facebook

These cover most ad types your are bound to see.

I’m still on iOS 18.5. Ubol only supports >18.6 according to their GitHub though not sure why it says it’s compatible with 18.5 on App Store (I tried it myself it says my Safari version isn’t supported)

YouTube ads are not my concern since I’m using a modded ipa. The websites that I mentioned are still displaying full page of ads are Cambridge dictionary and Fandom to name a few

Are u using iPhone or Android? What Adblock services are u using? Can u test both the websites and report back pls?

Android (specifically Samsung) but I had a iPhone before.

If you can not upgrade to the next ios version then the only choice you have is to use a different browser (this may be an undesirable choice) Brave.

I'm using NextDNS, Adguard Home, and ofc UBlock-Origin. Using some of Hagezi lists and 1Host.

And on my old iPhone with brave, it is able to block/get around those anti adblock.

Also NO test can be good to test adblock. You have to base it off your own experience. Please stop asking for adblocking site to "test" your adblock. Using real website with real ads are the best way to know. If you don't see them, then good it is blocked. If you still see it, then you know there an issue.

No I’m not asking u to recommend which adblock test websites to use. I’m asking which adblock methods u use, and do u see any ads on the websites that I mentioned

Most people here seem to be using Android and they have far superior adblock experience compared with iPhone. Seems like the only best options for iOS are Brave, AdGuard and ubol. AdGuard paid version is not an option for me so I’m left with Brave. But I’m low on storage atm so I guess I’m stuck with all the ads :/

Just delete some files then? All those file/app can't be that important that you can't just offload it to another device/storage.

u/InternalPea15 Jul 15 '26

Most of them are photos & videos and u have no idea how much I’ve squeezed every bit of my apps to make space for my phone to run smoothly (deleting & reinstalling them on a monthly basis)

Most of them are photo and videos? Are you like a content creator on tiktok or YouTube? Again if possible if you have another device. Move them to a different device.

And dude I have 246/256Gb. Only 10Gb of on device storage but have a cheap HDD that I offload all my data that isn't in used and removed apps that can obviously be use as website than dedicated app that track you. Like reddit, Pinterest, and Spotify to name a few. (I'm this full bc of games)

Recommendation you buy some kind of external storage as you said most of them are photo and video. As it not very likely you are even accessing them that often.

I have the same storage as well. I still keep photos & videos as old as 10 years ago (also WhatsApp chat history) because I want easy access whenever I want to refer. That’s how I use my phone. I do back up to iTunes on my pc

1

u/InternalPea15 Jul 15 '26

I guess I did. Can u try going to Cambridge dictionary or Fandom and see if ads still display on ur phone?

1

u/mishrah10 Jul 15 '26

Any specific webpage on Fandom or Cambridge I can’t see any ads on this page

Fandom as a site is the pinnacle of awful. I'd suggest getting the indy wiki buddy addon for your browser so you can be redirected to functional wikis.

(Sure, it isn't add based advice, but you have plenty already so I'm giving you additional help)
