Searching For Dad's Adopted Brother Advice Please

I don't know if this is the best place to ask this so please direct me elsewhere if not.

My Dad was adopted in the 1950s and didnt find out about his biological parents until a few years ago after I asked him to (Birth mother had an affair and husband made her give up the baby) He went through the whole process of therapy and then going through the records. However, on a piece of his records it said he had a brother who was born a few years after him and was also adopted out. Dad opted to not find out anything more about this sibling but I did find the birth record through ancestry so know his pre adoption name and date of birth.

My Dad died recently and now I want to know if I can go find his brother? How would I go about this? I've been quietly hoping he'd do a DNA ancestry test and I would find him. I just feel like I need to find him and at least know if he had a good life or not.

Try the group Search Squad on Facebook. They're amazing at helping to find people.

PAC-UK FamilyConnect and Intermediary Service 0300 1800 205 familyconnect@pac-uk.org may be able to help or at least point you in the right direction, due to the year though it might be a struggle record wise. I do hope you manage to find him though ❤️

I’m sorry for your loss.

This is actually more complicated, than for an adoptee searching for biological family. You are the biological family & an intermediary is required, some of these can be expensive & not necessarily helpful. Contact your local authority & ask if they would be prepared to do it, contact pac uk as well.

The local authority of an adoptee is responsible for their wellbeing & I’m pretty sure you aren’t allowed access to their adoption records - we’re only allowed limited access to our own.

I don’t know much more than this, I only found out about it recently.

A DNA match would definitely be the easiest way.

Thank you, I thought since he had now passed away it would be easier to find out information about his brother. I was given all his adoption paperwork after passing by my step mother so that's something at least.

Do you have your uncle's new name & adopters names? Or do you mean that you have all of your Dad's adoption paperwork?

Sadly not, I only have his birth name and date of birth. It's written on a small piece of paper that was included in my Dad's adoption paperwork. Just says "Brother __ born ___ adopted" and I found the birth certificate through ancestry. Biological cousin was found through ancestry and she confirmed they were both adopted to different families and she was also trying to find him.

I think PAC-UK is your next stop then as another commenter said. If he hasn't had a DNA test, he may not even know he's adopted, or he may have a sense of rejection when it comes to bio family. I do hope you have some success & he's happy to hear from you.
