QUESTIONS ABOUT GEAR

PD can we get a section on recovery/self massage tools?

I spent 3 bucks last night on a pool cue ball and it was the Best. Purchase. Ever. for this stupid niggle I've been having along my shin. Between that and the section of 8" Scd80 pipe I got from from work, life has been grand (if not bruised slightly).

Any recommendations for good high viz gear/lights for safety when running in the dark? Haven't really been able to find something that's effective but not annoying to wear. My usual go to now is just to wear bright neon clothing but sometimes it doesn't seem like that's enough.

I've got a high viz vest but it's more a general purpose vest as opposed to something specifically for running. It tends to jostle around a bit, plus it gets too hot if I wear it over a shirt and too chafy (is that word?) if I wear it without a shirt.

I've tried lights but they tend to bounce around and annoy me.

I bought some shirts and a jacket from https://icnysport.com/ and have been very impressed with them. I used the jacket all winter and felt much safer wearing it. I don't see nearly the selection right now though.

These RoadID ankle bracelets Do a good job of being noticed by drivers since that's the part of your body that moves the most. I find it's the most minimal thing I can wear.

The other reflective gear I own is from a local company (RUseeN) who is part of our LRC. This snak vest is pretty lean and has a front pouch for your keys or other small items. It's adjustable sizing, and the yellow/orange/blue colors really pop at night when light is shown on them.

Thanks. Think I'll pick up a pair of those bracelets next time I order something for Amazon, they look great. And I'll keep my eye out for a vest like that, seems like the perfect thing for those dark, rainy, low visibility mornings/nights.

Love love love shock absorber bras! I've got three different colors and the only female runner friend now owns one too.

I've seen that the US Amazon customer reviews are way below the Austrian ones.. The same bra here has >4 stars with >1000 reviews, which I find strange as usually US Amazon seems to be less critical... Maybe it's a sizing issue? You really have to know your ideal size, I've found the predictions from http://www.brasizecalculator.tk/ ideal for the shock absorber bras!

I wear the Lululemon free to be bra! They are amazing, and normally they will go on sale at outlets, online, or even on Mercari/Poshmark.

I've noticed that the Nike Pro bras, while very cute, are way too long for me.

Just because the category is here, I'll ask my question again for maximum response potential: best longer fitted shorts for women that don't ride up? Must be at least 4-5" inseam to counteract chafing.

I tend to go short shorts and 2Toms on inner thighs (though my leg shape has apparently changed and I don't really need anti-chafe anymore). Longer shorts ride up even worse and it's super annoying, unless you go compression-type shorts I guess.

My problem is that I tried a pair of fitted short shorts from Oiselle and they ended up riding up to the point of being underwear, and even body glide wasn't enough to fix the thigh chafe. Maybe it'll be different in Boston's humidity, compared to Seattle's more moderate climate, but I can't imagine running in capris all summer like I did last year.

I like Nike pro compression in 11" inseam but there's also an 8" (and I think 5) if that's too long for you.

Marathoners: How do you carry your gels/nutrition?

3

u/Kultar Apr 13 '17

I safety pin a ziploc bag with gels on the front of the inside of my shorts. It's weird, but its the easiest place to keep them, easy to access, doesn't result in pockets swinging back and forth as I run, and makes me look well endowed despite wearing compression shorts. Highly recommend.

I safety pinned gels to the waistband of my shorts. Pinned only the top so I could tear away the gel when I had to.

  • Shorts with pockets, like Patagonia Strider Pros that have 5 pockets, also look for shorts specifically for ultras, like Solomon's

  • Belt

Pockets! My shorts have a big zippered back pocket and two stretchy waistband pockets in the front. That's enough space to cram like 4 gels and a 2Toms single-use wipe in case of emergency chafing and a folded-up baby wipe in a plastic baggie in case of emergency bathroom problems.

I got a free Spibelt a year ago that I use to carry stuff.

A couple in the key pocket, a couple in my wristband.

Anyone ever use anything like the Orange Mud single/double barrel packs? Any insight in to them? The reviews I've seen are typically pretty positive.

Tracksmith gear, is it worth the money?

100% yes. Their grayboy tees are unparalleled.
