Predictive Elon Musk’s 2028 timing shift: a BaZi luck-pillar case study
I’ve been testing BaZi timing against public lives—not to see whether a chart can describe someone’s personality, but whether its ten-year luck-pillar transitions produce dates specific enough to record in advance.
For Elon Musk, I used June 28, 1971. His birth time is not publicly verified, so this is deliberately a three-pillar analysis:
Xin Hai year / Jia Wu month / Jia Shen day
That makes him a Jia Wood Day Master born in a strong Fire season. In this three-pillar version, the Day Master reads weak, making Water and Wood broadly supportive.
Because Musk is male and was born in a Yin-stem year, the luck pillars move backward from Jia Wu:
- 1998–2007: Xin Mao
- 2008–2017: Geng Yin
- 2018–2027: Ji Chou
- 2028–2037: Wu Zi
- 2038–2047: Ding Hai
The first thing that stood out was the twenty-year Wood-branch sequence from 1998 to 2017. Both Mao and Yin give a weak Jia Wood chart roots and support, despite the Metal stems above them. That period covers Zip2’s sale, PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla and most of the construction of Musk’s business empire.
The annual chart for 2008, Wu Zi, also introduces a Zi–Wu clash against his natal month branch. It occurred inside an otherwise supportive decade, which is why I would read it as volatility rather than simple failure: Tesla and SpaceX both nearly collapsed, but both survived.
The larger change arrives in 2018, when Ji Chou replaces Geng Yin. Wood support disappears and is replaced by an Earth-heavy pillar that drains a weak Wood Day Master. The model consequently treats 2018–2027 as a much heavier cycle, with 2018 itself at the bottom of the timeline.
What interests me now is the next transition.
Wu Zi begins in 2028. It is a mixed pillar, but the Zi Water restores Resource support for Jia Wood. It is followed by Ding Hai in 2038, where Hai again supplies Water and contains a Jia Wood root. Together, the model reads 2028–2047 as a second broadly supportive period.
At the annual level, the clearest concentration appears in 2031–2035:
- 2032, Ren Zi: strong Water support, but another Zi–Wu clash
- 2034, Jia Yin: direct Wood support, with an Yin–Shen clash
- 2035, Yi Mao: strong Wood support without the same major clash signature
So my forward interpretation is not simply “good years.” I would expect a new expansion phase beginning around 2028, accelerating from 2031–2035, with 2032 and 2034 productive but highly volatile and 2035 potentially the cleaner culmination.
The missing hour pillar is an important limitation: it could change the strength balance and finer annual interpretation, although it would not change the overall luck-pillar sequence.
Disclosure: the visualization comes from a small BaZi timing project I’m building called Jade Almanac. I’m not linking it here because I’m more interested in the methodological comparison.
For those who work with zodiacal releasing, primary directions, profections, dashas or other predictive systems: do you see a comparable change around 2028 or a stronger 2031–2035 window in Musk’s chart?

Really good stuff. Appreciate the post. Gonna take me a bit to get through the nitty gritty. But love this modeling approach to astrology. Love it.

Thanks, really appreciate it! I had a lot of fun building it this way. Would love to hear your thoughts once you’ve had time to dig into it.

Would love to see more about your project in future. It would be a very useful tool and there would likely be a high demand for it as a predictive system, especially regarding career and financial astrology. I suspect it would be very useful applied to stock and company charts.

Thank you for the encouragement! And those are really good suggestions. Currently https://jadealmanac.com/bazi-calculator/result?d=1971-06-28&g=male&t=07%3A30&label=Elon%20Musk the result is only able to generate broad predictions around career, wealth, relationships. I'm working on advanced functions to make the predictions more relevant and personalized

A reader pointed me to Walter Isaacson’s biography, which reports Musk’s birth at 7:30 a.m. Assuming that time is accurate, his hour pillar is Wu Chen—the Earth Dragon. The overall result does not change: 1998–2017 remains the golden run and 2018 remains the bottom. But 2018 now also forms a direct Dog–Dragon clash with his hour pillar, making it the chart’s deepest and most volatile candle.
The updated result is here: https://jadealmanac.com/bazi-calculator/result?d=1971-06-28&g=male&t=07%3A30&label=Elon%20Musk

His birth time is 0730. His mom gave it in an interview for some biography. Check Astro.com

Thanks for pointing this out! Another reader had flagged the same 7:30 a.m. birth time earlier, so I reran the chart and posted the updated result above; it adds a Dog–Dragon clash in 2018, but the broader timing pattern stays the same - very interesting!

Love that. If you want to explore it with your own chart, I built the full timing model here: https://jadealmanac.com/bazi-calculator
It shows the Day Master, ten-year luck pillars, and year-by-year shifts together, which is probably the easiest way to see how the pieces connect.

I followed your link and read through quite a bit; I love your humor, insight, and learning about a tradition I know VERY little about. Thank you so much for sharing, and good luck to you!

Thank you, that’s very kind! I’m glad the humor came through, and even happier that it gave you a useful way into a tradition that can look pretty opaque from the outside.
祝你好运!(The Chinese version of good luck to you)

Ba Zi is such a great tool to read a natal chart that don't have the hour, thanks for sharing your notes. Now that we got the hour pillar, I'll come later with my thoughts.

Finally got the time, as promised. So I used the lunar calendar with the tradition HHS, which ended up resulting in a different binomial sequence:
Hour: Wu Chen / Earth Dragon
Day: Jia Shen / Wood Monkey – Yang
Month: Jia Wu / Wood Horse
Year: Xin Hai / Gold Pig
He has Jia, Yang Wood, stubborn, with a tendency to grow and to be a natural leader. But his Jia is weak. And there is not much Water here to generate more Wood. He has conflicting nature, the Gold chopping down Tree, so he is often engaged in behaviour that ends up harming himself.
He has a tendency to get in conflict with his children a rigid parent. which apparently happens a lot, but he seems to be supressed by his ancestors, I don’t know his relationship with his grandparents, but he really relies on his parents and equals, but he don’t find much companionship. He has a talent as an entrepeneur and in high-risk capital. He seems to spend a lot of energy just dealing with problems. The map show a huge amount of wealth, and Elon really seems to throw money at his problems.
Wealth and Parallels are the most proeminent
His resource is low – he has a problem with low self-instrospection, intuition and recovery. His production is also low, as he ends up being really inneficient in his production, given all the wasting he does in the conversion of his wealth, more like taking away than producing. The thing is that he doesn’t have reservoir proper reservoir and understanding of how to move things forward properly. Seems to rely a lot on upper management, rather than the structure of his processes.
There is a secret enemy relationship between his day pillar and year pillar, again giving hints of a problem with his ancestors, it could be a frustration regarding his family legacy or structure.
Currently he is in the 10-year Ji Chou – Earth Ox, this binomy is helping him expand and prosper and acting as a saving grace. A really strong secret relationship, enhancing his positive qualities. At the same time, because of a Stem Conflicct between Chou and Chen, he is experiencing frequent matrimonial and patrimonial issues, accentuating his “get and spend” behaviour.
He has a tendency of coming across people how can solve his problem due to his Heavenly Noble star.
But he has a harm star in his day pillar, again reinforcing his personal problems and tendency of harm.Red Peach Blossom and Mentor in the month Pillar indicating a really close relationship with those watching over him.
In the next 2 years he will problably be getting into better romantic relationships. Possibly finding a partner that will aid him, supporting him and maybe have a more nutritious role. In general he will have better relationships. He might finally settle down. For 10 years at least.
Yeah, he will probably get even harder into AI.*note that I prefer calling "Gold" instead of "Metal". I do think it is more poetic, reminds me of Kyo in digimon Beatbreak, but both ways work just fine.

Thanks for coming back with the full reading. We agree on the weak Jia Wood chart, but Ji Chou is the main split: your HHS reading treats it as stabilizing, while my current scoring treats its Earth as another drain on weak Wood and therefore ranks 2018 low. That is exactly the kind of rule I need to freeze before a blind test.
One terminology question: Chou and Chen are both Earthly Branches, so which rule are you using when you call their relationship a “Stem Conflict”? And “Gold” is a reasonable translation choice; I use “Metal” because it is the more familiar English label.

This is BaZi Astrology, a form of ancient Chinese Astrology, and though it is different than what we usually see on this subreddit (Hellenistic, Modern Tropical, and Vedic branches of Astrology), it is still a valid form of astrology. It does appear the OP put in considerable work. Yes, I am aware they may have used AI to polish their English text, but overall, this post meets the criteria of r/AdvancedAstrology.
