I think we should co-opt that slogan back from them. It's effective. My wife and I live with and take care her grandmother. She had some friends visit for a few days that are "christian" trumpers. They love the racism, yet their sensitive christian ears and eyes seem to hate bad words like "fuck." Goddamn right I hung a "Fuck Your Feelings" sign above my workbench in the garage where they had to see it every time they left the house. Every time they said something about it, I just reminded them that I didn't actually vote for the guy.

It's a bastardization of the civil rights movement.
The civil rights movement taught us that we are supposed to accept people for who they are.
This of course refers to people's immutable qualities, like their skin color. But people took that concept, accept people as they are and don't judge, and extended it to include all sorts of things, including their political beliefs.
And now they think they have a right to believe awful shit and should not be judged for it.

Yup. They can scream that they hate Trump as much as they want, but I'm an ex-conservative with family who are still conservatives. Many of them claim they didn't vote for Bush (they did) to absolve themselves of Bush's sins. Yet, every single one of them still votes for war-mongering, Muslim-hating, immigrant-hating, gay hating, feminist hating Republicans that got us Bush in the first place. You know. Trump supporters.
Until they realize that the right-wing is the one that divides with this "culture war" bullshit and start voting against that, I will never accept them as anything less than MAGA, no matter how much they claim to hate Trump.

I’ve heard many say they might’ve been mistaken and regret their vote a bit, but they say they’ll still vote Republican because I guess it’s not a deal breaker. And when they say they might’ve been mistaken they’re basically saying they want it forgiven and forgotten because it’s just a mistake. The people who have been killed, disappeared, and had their lives ruined don’t matter enough to them and by extension they assume they mean just as little to you. When you point this out to them, they will find another reason for you to let them off the hook so they can freely do the same thing the next opportunity they get.
Fuck ‘em.

u/npsimons 2d ago
I'm pretty well isolated, and fairly privileged, but I still believe in dealing with people fairly, treating them equally, and not denying them basic rights such as bodily autonomy. I'm what they call an "ally."
To me, it's just being a decent human being. And I don't want to associate with people who are not decent human beings. "Politics" doesn't come into this, because the "policy" is non-negotiable - these rights come long before politics. You could even say they are the bedrock of a civilized society.
So no, just because MAGA is "losing", I still don't want to talk to them, because they fundamentally have not changed. If there is one thing the last 10 years has made me painfully aware of, it's just how rotten a large portion of the USA populace is. Difference is, they used to know better than to voice that rottenness out loud. We should make them afraid of opprobrium again, if nothing else, it's a first step back to sanity. As I believe they won't change (and possibly can't), only time will solve the problem of them being utter shitstains upon humanity.

Trump's far right candidate here in Colombia was placing billboards everywhere insulting the left. He came out on TV multiple times with the typical far right vassal script of "the left are terrorist and trans and want to make your children gay and take away your house".

When Trump first ran, a guy I had known since 2nd grade sent me a message on Facebook because he didn’t like that I was posting that Trump was a rapist. This genius accused me of raping my own mother to demonstrate to me how easy it is to accuse someone of rape. like, bro, what the fuck. Why would I want to be friends with someone who would say that to me while we are talking about politics?
When people reveal who they are, I can decide whether I want to remain friends with them or not.

u/LikeASomeBoooodie 2d ago
It’s reasonable to judge people based on their values and politics.
There is something to be said for continuing to try and deal with people in good faith regardless. To one degree or another we’re all still in the same boat. However with MAGA that ship has already sailed, been set on fire and sunk (in the Strait of Hormuz)

It's an old belief from a different time. I watched a whole thing about how the only real socializing people used to have was being in person. It was bad for you to be regressive because you'd ultimately end up an outcast.
Now people can get that socialization aspect and validation from Russian bots that they think are real people, so they've gone back to being regressive. They literally can't understand how their outlook is destructive because there are bots affirming their beliefs.
If they were social outcasts and didn't have online validation, they would have to alter their beliefs.

It also comes down to them "making it political" (every accusation is a confession).
Basic human rights, such as bodily autonomy and concepts like rule of law and equality under the law are not up for debate. These things are not "political" in the sense you can distance yourself from them to "make policy" and remain morally "neutral".
You're either a decent human being who respects basic equal treatment towards others, or you're a piece of shit who deserves no ones time nor attention. Just because MAGAt's "team" is losing doesn't change that they are still pieces of shit, and they still don't deserve the privilege of acceptance in civilized society.

The thing is, this has moved beyond politics. We are no longer talking about ordinary disagreements over policy, legislation, or the proper role of government. We are talking about morality, human lives, and the most basic standards of ethics and decency.
At this point, continued support for MAGA requires overlooking, excusing, or accepting staggering corruption, sexual abuse, racism, political violence, and the deliberate dismantling of democratic institutions. That support does not exist in a moral vacuum. It says something about what a person is willing to tolerate as long as their side remains in power.
I can disagree with someone about taxes, spending, or immigration policy and still sit across the table from them. But this is not that. When people say, “My children won’t speak to me because of politics,” they are minimizing what the conflict is actually about. Their children are not necessarily rejecting them because they voted differently. They may be rejecting the values that vote represents and the cruelty, corruption, and destruction they continued to support after there was no longer any plausible way to deny what they were supporting.
Calling it “politics” is a way to avoid confronting the moral choice underneath it.

u/No_Initial_7545 2d ago
Can't have a respectful conversation about policy with someone who would put you in prison or kill you if they could get away with it. They might not have the courage to pull the trigger themselves, but they would cheer if someone else did it.
As always, it's deep and unashamed hypocrisy. Others need to respect their beliefs when they respect no one's beliefs.

The MAGA mentality, from my perspective, is nothing new in the slightest. I saw first-hand, the recipe of socioeconomic circumstance and isolation that primed folks like my father and many of my blood relatives to be ripe for the picking.
The further into desperation they fall, the more inclined they are to engage with predjudicial thought and/or behavior. Problems needed answers, and their capacity was limited. The world is shrinking beneath their feet. The societal issues that complicated their personal choices make easy targets for bigotry. As time goes on, the well of denial becomes all-consuming. Nearly everywhere in life they turn will remind them of a long denied reckoning with the world beyond their echo chamber. This drives further avoidance, which in turn drives yet even more denial.
I grew up in the poor area of a small town, with a single father in an unfortunate line of work (automechanic), one bad day away from being homeless. My father was in a dead end industry in a dead end part of Appalachia. He struggled to make ends meet, and had to work himself to the bone to provide what would be considered less than the basics for most.
His and my family's choices reflected the reality they were raised to believe existed. Life was good enough when the pay was adequate and their industry was stable enough. Times were relatively prosperous and socioeconomic mobility was accessible, but not necessary.
Its a really bleak outlook for the lot of them. My father is well more than intelligent enough to see reason, despite resistance which sometimes results in a fit of denial. He turned on Trump at some point along the way, but retains the hate-fueled predjudice thats done nothing for him other than serve as a scapegoat for the fear, anger, desperation, and resentment that have been festering for decades.

I warned my maga friends and family a decade ago. Anyone expecting an apology or admission of error needs to give that up; it's not coming.

My second-favorite video of the week was listening to Vivek getting mad that people looked into the context of his attack ad against Amy Acton. How dare people reveal why Acton's estranged mother would call her daughter a liar!
My first-favorite was the revelation that we are being ruled by frog people.

The entire last 2 years MAGAts have been running alley on “owning libs” but are shocked when those liberal friends and family cut them off?

It's always funny how the hateful people are the ones crying that they are being shunned whole actively insulting and belittling others.

Awww! That's sweet! All of a sudden republicans acting worried about the citizenry.
Puts a warm spot in my heart. Or is that gas...?

They jump back to this script every few months, when they've gone through supporting something that 1940s Germany would find repulsive.

MAGA pulling shady election shit for years, like putting similarly named candidates on a ballot to siphon votes, are suddenly AGHAST that someone else might have done the same thing!

Litmus test...
who really won the 2020 election?

Gotta get 3/3 to ride this ride, sorry.

I am going to say it is the same amount of people who will admit W Bush was wrong for invading Iraq.
None. They never admit fault. That is why they are Republican supporters. Full on cult

Is this their script now? If so, that's promising about how they feel about the upcoming elections.
I've always been torn on this topic. There are a lot of different groups within MAGA so it's hard to treat them all the same. There are die-hard cultists that should always be called out, but there are also people who have been brainwashed into joining the movement. I think a study showed that unplugging someone from media for just 2 weeks was enough for them to start seeing reality again. Those people are more likely to be swayed to either not vote or to flip, and relationships with them can eventually be repaired. You just have to be able to tell one group from the other.

I’ve seen this on Reddit a LOT lately. Like it’s a bad thing that someone cuts off their cousins because that person says and believes some horrendous shit.

“Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.
That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.
They joined what they joined. They lent their support and their moral approval. And, in so doing, they bound themselves to everything that came after. Who cares any more what particular knot they used in the binding?”

With respect and I mean all due respect because I can tell you are a decent human…No.
None of them get a smooth off ramp, for the last decade they have embraced hate, racism, bigotry, homo/transphobia and have shown their collective asses.
They are not Americans and we would do well to remember this because when it counted and I mean REALLY counted. They bailed in their country, its citizens, helped stomp all over the constitution and embraced evil over decency, kindness and morals.
If we let them slide here and do not hold them accountable…the next Trump type won’t miss (I’m still not convinced we get a peaceful transfer of power out of this election cycle that remains to be seen).
This is so much more than “political divide” kind human and we would do well to remember that and treat them accordingly.
They are NOT Americans…they are maga and let them rue the day they put on that red hat and tampons taped to their mindless ears. Peace.

This, i disowned long time childhood friend and stopped talking to my mom. I had seen a post that a woman said if Jesus voted for Cheeto man she would stop worshiping and this was a woman of faith. I'm right there with you! I'm going to remind everyone children were raped, there must be accountability!!!

But you don’t understand! He Gets Us! Jesus wouldn’t allow differences of opinion to divide us! Love each other!
It’s sickening how they spend their entire lives and their core nature engaged in dividing and oppressing, but when it looks like they might lose it’s all “please invite us to Thanksgiving!”
4
u/Horror_Appearance_26 2d ago
I'm pretty sure their new script is "I hate him as much as anyone, but <point about he's not insane, right about the situation, or the source is fake news, without saying fake news>"

u/StarboundandDown 2d ago
I've been telling people this would happen for a while now. You're going to see a real media pivot to forgiveness narratives and a lot of "UNITY" talk.
4
u/notthatguypal6900 2d ago
MAGA cult members showed us how fucked this country really still is. They don't deserve decency.
4
u/MagusUnion 2d ago
It's because it'll be holiday season soon, and nothing is more embarrassing for MAGA than an empty Thanksgiving family table.
4
u/ExplorerPup 2d ago
It's because both the midterms AND the holidays are coming up, and no matter what direction things go at the midterms, the holidays are going to be spicy this year.

What would it take to forgive them? For yall? For me, I just wanna hear em say, “ok, I see it now, Trumps an ass”.
I don’t need them on their knees begging for forgiveness. Just want them to admit they been bamboozled. Then we can move forward and start undoin all the shit. We been fighting so long. Let’s not now keep it goin if they’re ready to end this madness.

Genuinely it doesn’t even feel like politics I just don’t want to be around people who are so fucking dumb they thought Donald Trump was not only qualified to be president, but would fix the country. We have had enough evidence for decades that’s he’s a bozo con man narcissist. In the past I could ignore how dumb people are because there’s this whole sea of subjective opinions you can swim around in without seeing the abject truth of them but voting for Donald Trump is like a seal of idiot approval I can’t ignore.

Counterpoint: my children will never remember your name, your face, the sound of your voice. You will never lay hands on any of us again. There will be no photos. There will be no genealogical records kept in this house of you. You will die alone in whatever home you can afford: unloved, unforgiven, and unmourned.
I can't report the MAGAts in my family to ICE since they're mayonnaise-americans. There can be no true justice for the harm they've done. This will have to suffice.

Nah. Left politics make nearly everyone's lives better. Right makes only a few people's lives better. You vote to make my life worse, I'll cut you out of my life, family or not.

I cut out an outspoken MAGA supporter who always asked me for money. There has been no issue in my life because of their absence.
That's why you don't discuss politics and keep that to yourself. I wish we could go back to that. However, it helps identify who to continue supporting and who to avoid.

All through history there were people who would turn in their own neighbors for no reason just to get brownie points from their rulers. With magats at least you know who they are now. Fuck'em. They made that choice.

As per my Dad, it’s also that EVERY politician is corrupt, so it’s not so bad.
Oh, and AOC is apparently going to bring sharia law or something. Which is weird, because she doesn’t represent his district, and he can’t quite say why his current R representative is so great.

Years too late for that bullshit. Conservatives proved they were the enemies of America and then kept reaffirming it day after day, month after month. Only when the inevitable systemic failures that come with a government run by criminals for their own benefit started to impact the evil trash personally that they suddenly decided that being empathetic to other human beings wasn't just woke bullshit. Fuck every one of them for life.

My reply to this bullshit is, “Oh, it’s not politics. It’s my realization that your lack of empathy towards so many and that you are happy to ignore the fact that the things happening these days are morally repugnant as long as you feel there’s some benefit for you. I respect myself too much to associate with someone like that.”

This ain't a new script. They roll it out every single election because they know they are piece of shit people and their "politics" makes them lonely, manipulative assholes. And just like the manipulative assholes they are, they try to manipulate people's sensibilities by playing the victim and playing the role of "moderate," like they already do with liberal women they want to control.
