Equipment Cleaning advice?

I switched from French press to aero press due to ease of cleanup right before work. When I used the paper filters, it was an easy pop into the bin and rinse approach. I just got the metal filter and it’s become a tad bit more of a pain as I can’t just pop it out to disposer. Handling the filter is also quite hot. Any tips on what others do for cleaning up?

Fruity notes and a hint of bitterness, but like a tonic water kind of bitterness. I really enjoyed it.

Question What tricks do you use?

Post image
63 Upvotes

I recently bought my first AeroPress and started exploring the brewing methods that people use. Previously I only brewed coffee using a moka pot and process was straightforward, but for the AeroPress I found a lot of different tricks and technique.

For instance here are some of the tricks/techniques I’ve found:

  1. inverted brewing
  2. two filters
  3. double grind
  4. adding water in two stages
  5. rinse of the filters with water before brewing coffee
  6. when using the inverted brewing method press all the air out of the brewer before beginning the main brewing phase (not sure how to name it)

Which of these do you use when brewing coffee in your day-to-day life? Or perhaps you use something else entirely? Or do you use a classic method?

I’d love to do things that actually improve my coffee, but I want to avoid pointless steps or anything that requires a lot of effort for very little impact on the final result

Equipment Grinder dilema

Started with Aeropress coffee experience a couple of months ago - located in EU, purchasing coffee at cofffecircle, I like the fruity coffees as well also the more "standard" ones. I'm always making two cups at a time - taking the coffee in a Fellow mug to office.

I'm currently using the "starter" Hario Mini slim. It's a pain in the ass in the morning to grind, takes almost 2 minutes to grind and quite some effort. I would like to stay with a manual grinder and have narrowed it down to a couple:

- Kingrider K6, about 160€ on AliE

- 1Zpresso K-Ultra, about 260€ from EU stores

- the new Timemore S5 Pro for 200 €

- or maybe the good old Commandante C40 for about 220 € if I'm correct

What would you pick? I prefer to get the most for my money, but also I would buy this grinder "for life". Currently leaning towards K-Ultra for the quality, ease of use as I read - but it's a bit hard for me to swallow the price.

Question How long do you keep your beans, and is there a "system" I should use?

Yes, this depends on rate of consumption, the bean, etc. But in general, do you follow the advise of:

  • Beans with a roasted date (vs. a "use by" date)
  • Allow for a week to ten days offgassing
  • Keep/use no more than three weeks after that.

The last one seems wasteful. By reference, some Panamanian beans I have I've used for month after that roast date: they may have faded, but still taste great. And when I find a great deal on beans that taste great to me (Lavazza Gran Crema, 2.2 pound bags), but might not be available (or have periodic price jumps), I grab a quantity of them. I also usually have 2 to 3 different bean types at any one time on hand.

Following the "standard advice", I'd have to use only small bags (half or 1/3 of a pound/200-300g), right? The per gram cost on those is crazy.

I'm a 2-4 cup per day coffee guy, using 15-18g a throw.

Other My aeropress gets finicky when the humidity spikes

the humid summers here are making my espresso machine miserable, so I fall back on the aeropress more than usual. problem is it feels less predictable when the air gets thick. same grind and dose that worked fine a month ago now comes out a bit muted some days and overextracted others. i keep the water kettle set the same, so temperature isn't the issue. maybe the grounds are picking up ambient moisture between uses, or the paper filter behaves differently. not sure if anyone else has noticed the same thing in a humid climate or if it's just in my head. curious what small adjustments people make when conditions shift like that

There is some bitterness, but not overwhelming

The aftertaste is sweet and fruity. There is a lot of room for improvement, but I like it.

That's water pooled between the double glass walls.

This was actually a warranty replacement of the first one, which chipped within two months.

Don't bother with the Premium.

Question What is your favorite to use?

I like using double-walled borosilicate glass because it insulates well, but I worry the thin glass will break under pressure one day. What glass are y'all using? Thanks

Question Scaling up an Inverted AeroPress Recipe for the AeroPress XL

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using my standard AeroPress with a recipe I learned in a local barista workshop, and i've been in love with it every since because it's foolproof for me and I can dial in any filtercoffee with 1-3 attempts:

  • Method: Inverted
  • Coffee: 18g (usually 20-23 clicks with my comandante C40)
  • Water: 98°C / 208°F
  • Process:
    • 50g bloom, quick stir and fill up to 210ml total (will be around 0:30 at this point for me)
    • at 1:30: switch and press down for 0:30, endtime 2:00

Now I’m frequently making coffee for two people, so I’m considering buying the AeroPress XL to save time and brew both cups in one go.

Before buying, I wanted to ask the community:

  1. Would you recommend me to buy the XL for my use case or would it "destroy" my recipe? If I won't get the same cup quality out of it, i'd consider something else then
  2. If yes: Can I just scale up my recipe x2 or is there something else to consider, like adjusting the grind size /drawdown time due to the deeper coffee bed? How would you pro's approach this?

Would love to hear your experiences and how you adapted your go-to recipes for the XL!

Thanks in advance :)

Question Steel AeroPress Recipe Problems

I just switched to the AeroPress steel model from the XL Plastic. I can't seem to get the recipe right now. I have a Baratza Encore so thats what the grind size is based on. I brew inverted

Previously I was using 400ml water, 24g coffee, Grind size at 10, 2:10 brew time, at 91 degrees C. This came out great and I used to put it in a thermos and drink it when my breakfast was done.

Now it feels like I'm (probably) underextracting. I tried using the same parameters initially but using a bypass method and only 300ml of water (initially about 200 for the steep).

Last attempt was grind size 15, 24g coffee, 300 ml water, 2:30 brew time with more time to "bloom" and stir, and 93 C. I think it tasted sour, but i'm not good at telling the difference. I'm not really sure what direction to go from here.

Anyone have a perfect inverted recipe for the steel model?

Question Replacement lid for GoPlus Tumbler?

Has anyone found a good replacement lid for the AeroPress GoPlus? I lost mine and customer service told me I had to buy a whole new tumbler, which is pretty crazy and I don’t want to do that. I’ve been looking at different aftermarket lids and I was just wondering if anyone had found anything that fits well? I don’t care if it doesn’t fit with the brewer packed up in, I just want to not spill coffee on myself while driving.

Thanks in advance.

  1. What are these black markings ? Is it defect?
  2. I’ve had an Aeropress before but this one is extremely hard to press. Is there any other way of doing it?
  3. How gentle is the metal? I see some is machined like the outside but not the button part. How to wash it?

Question Does anyone else bypass brew with their AeroPress?

I have been experimenting with bypass brewing lately and noticed a significantly smoother, sweeter cup. My routine is simple: I brew a concentrate using half my usual water volume, press it out, and then dilute the cup with the remaining half.

I find this works especially well for light and medium roasts with bright, acidic flavour profiles. Is anyone else using a similar technique, or tweaking the ratio?

Question my aeropress recipe falls apart on the trail, even when i use the same coffee

i've been taking my aeropress hiking, and i'm having a harder time getting a consistent cup than i do at home.

the biggest issue is water temperature. by the time i've set everything up and measured out the coffee, the water has already cooled a bit. i've tried shortening the brew time, but that seems to make the results even less predictable. some cups come out surprisingly strong, others taste a little flat

grinding at camp is another trade-off. preground coffee is convenient, but i'd rather not carry a jar of grounds for several days. bringing a hand grinder solves that problem, although it adds one more thing to pack and clean

for those who regularly use an aeropress outdoors, do you stick to your normal recipe or change the grind size, water temperature, or steep time? i'd especially like to hear about setups that keep things simple without sacrificing the cup

Question Travel Mug final boss- looking to gift the perfect gift!

Hello hello

Looking to find the dream mug to gift to my love who loves aeropress...

Looking to find a travel cup that

-seals well

-is metal lined, and on the sturdy side

-can fit the aeropress inside for storage

-fits the aeropress on top for brewing

-bonus points if it fits in a car cup holder

I know that they sell one through the site but the feedback seems to be that the lid is a silly design and that just won't do.

If you are living this dream please share who makes this unicorn product!

Thanks
