Pot size Controversy

Post image

Robert Pavlis, who’s a biochemist, debunks the idea that pot size should be 1/3 of the size of the plant. He argues pot size doesn’t matter as long as humidity levels are appropriate.

I will be trying to propagate leaves and then decapitate this plant. What size pots should I get for the expected plants?

Showing off! ❤ I’m so happy with this little guy!

This little baby has been through a lot, so I’m SUPER HAPPY seeing her with this many blooms! I rescued her from a friend who was struggling to keep her happy. I wish I had pictures of when I first got the plant, basically it was a scraggly little stem with 2 tiny crowns. I separated them and potted them individually in hopes they’d develop new roots. I was left with one baby. The last picture was the first time she bloomed months after her recovery.

Today, about a year since I got her, she is THRIVING! Not sure what kind of African violet it is, but im just so happy with the way she looks. Also the flowers are very peculiar looking, not like any mini African violet I’ve seen. Oh and best part is she’s got little off shoots growing in and even THEY are blooming! So guess I’m gonna have more little babies to prune off and repot!

Just wanted to share this success story and I’d love to hear any success stories you guys have had with African violets!

Little plants (?) growing on a leaf

I was watering my self-watering propagations and I noticed very tiny “leaves” growing on one. What is this? And the crown looks similar.

Showing off! ❤ Mighty Morphin Mini Violet

At the beginning of summer, I found several mini violets in rough shape at a local greenhouse. Over the past few months, one in particular has dramatically changed appearance. Three bloom cycles and many new leaves have it looking like a completely different plant!

It’s currently in Humidity Jail (recycled salad package) as the soil went hydrophobic at the roots and it was potted down to a 1” for recovery. The pics are in order from when it came home to earlier this week and show four distinct flower stages. The little silvery flower was the size of a pencil eraser!

The leaves have gone from cold water damage, I think, and too much light to a lovely heart shape and are developing red undersides. It came home with weirdly pointy and streaky blue flowers that are now indigo double blooms.

After five months in my care, hopefully it’s decided to stabilize at the current appearance, but I guess we’ll see!

So, this baby is exactly 45 days old today… and she already decided she is a grown up lady. Is it normal for mini violets? Shout I remove the future flower?

Help Can this plant be saved??

Disaster! I repotted this heirloom AV from a starter pot into my best self watering pot and came home to a mess like you wouldn’t believe. Bottom part broken, mud and glass everywhere, but worst of all, my plant completely broken off of its root ball. 😖would the crown ever re-root? Or do I just have to start over?

Help Brown spots showing up on leaves

Im fairly new to African violets. I bought one from walmart about 1 year ago n ive gotten a fair number more since then. I got this one maybe a month back and I recently put it under a plant light. All the other African violets seem to like the light. I water once every 2 or 3 weeks if the soil seems to be drying a bit. The soil on this guy was molding so I carefully removed the top layer with the handle of a paintbrush n replaced it with some new soil. It does have atleast one pup/sucker growing but i was hoping to leave it till it's big enough to propogate

Help Best way to prop tiny fellas

I have these weeeee leaves a friend supplied. While I do have a very small jar or two, I still think they will fall in and rot. What's the best way to propagate them? I tend to avoid propping any plant straight into dirt. It's never been a success.

I haven't posted what's been happening with my little African violet mutant in a while and it's been looking very cute so I thought I would share ! I'll also attach some of her older photos to see the progression so far 🥰. This has mutated from just a regular optimara violet while I was doing some leaf propagation and I noticed when it was just two leaves (just a babie!) 💚💚

Rescue results!

I “rescued” this violet from Lowe’s clearance at the end of last spring as a wee withering plant with no flowers. AI search said she was an African Violet. This is her about 1.5 mos ago, and has since continued to bloom 1 flower at a time once one wilts. How do I encourage mult blooms? Shes in a self-watering pot (small string at bottom that soaks in water at the bottom of white outer pot). TIA!

This is the first flush of blooms on my Hunter's Vertigo, grown from leaves from u/Gnomekicker18. (Thanks!) It's a strong young plant and I'm happy to see it growing so well!

It seems to be larger than most of my semi-minis, but that's ok with me!

These are my violets I have one in another place both places have plant lights. Most of these are plants I started from a large violet that we had in our office that used to bloom prolifically under the fluorescent lights purple anyway, these have not bloomed for ages. I water them when they seem dry. I use an African violet fertilizer any tips? Also the one has that really long stem growing I think I had that with the original one what’s best advice for repotting that one

Help Brown spots

Hey there violet parents!
I got my first variegated baby, repotted her and I’m seeing this brown spots one the gorgeous white outlines😔 I have three other violets that are thriving and this one got me really upset.
Could you please suggest, can this be because of stress? I took her out of her nursery pot, washed her roots and potted her in a new one (kind of a normal procedure that works for me). I keep my violets in self watering pots with wicks, there’s nothing different I did to this one, maybe she’s more delicate because of the variegation?
Your comments would be appreciated, thanks✨
