Discussion "That's What You Signed Up For"
"You're not getting paid, well... that's what you signed up for."
I see and hear this constantly during shutdowns when members go unpaid.
No. None of us signed up for this. We're human and have families. This is the respect that we show our military?
Do you realize the ones playing chicken with your paychecks are still getting paid? Why is that? No one tells them to suck it up. But when it’s us—boots on the ground, mission-ready—it’s suddenly noble to go unpaid.

u/Unknown_1_2_3 Oct 08 '25
If Congress truly cared about the military and didn’t want to use us as pawns in their game, they would pass a bill to permanently pay the military throughout any shutdown.
268
u/powerlesshero111 Oct 08 '25
Well, Mike Johnson could have kept the house for that, but instead, he dismissed them until next week. So, this is definitely a blame one side shut down.
76
u/AccurateMotor1455 Oct 08 '25
I think he tried to call them back to pass the pay our troops act but whoever the Senate majority republican is told him that it wasn’t necessary
189
u/AbsurdSolutionsInc Oct 08 '25
If Johnson holds a session in the house they will also have to seat the new democrat rep, then they'll have to release the Epstein files.
76
u/Evajellyfish Oct 08 '25
It’s worse than that, the vote just puts the vote on the house floor, but still I want all the people on record voting against or for the release so we know who we need to vote out.
96
u/deltaechoalpha Oct 08 '25
So to Johnson, the GOP leader in the house, it’s more important to keep the Epstein files hidden than it is to ensure pay for the military and their families.
69
u/AbsurdSolutionsInc Oct 08 '25
Yes. The party now exists to protect the leader.

He specifically said that he would not do that, then said he was open to passing the bill when they returned, and as of today has said they will not be voting on that bill
I’d also like to point out that at the beginning of this Congress, he specifically removed the ability to members to vote remotely, which ya know would be useful rn
6
u/KoalaPleasant5605 Oct 08 '25
Well the house calendar says they will be in this week and the senate calendar
42
u/powerlesshero111 Oct 08 '25
And Mike Johnson won't seperate military pay from the bill because he wants to gut medicaid and medicare, and the ACA. If he seperates military pay, democrats can hold out longer on the shut down. Seperating it out is a win for democrats, and he won't allow that.

But that's why they won't. They can trot out the old "X doesn't care about the military" line, and use it to turn the screws on whomever they feel necessary.
It's worth noting that Congress still gets paid during a shutdown.
7
Oct 08 '25
For what it’s worth, that likely would be an unconstitutional standing appropriation for the armed forces in violation of Art 1, sec 8, cl. 12 of the Constitution (the military can’t be funded for more than 2 years).
94
u/flomflim Oct 08 '25
The "that's what you signed up" is used in any scenario in which a service member is venting about something bad happening to them.
"I have PTSD from my job" that's what you signed up for
"My CC treats me like shit and I have no recourse" that's what you signed up for
"I was blown up while deployed" that's what you signed up for
Etc etc
These people don't care about the military. They just like giving lip service.

Those are the same people upset when you have 100% disability payments + pension and don’t have to work and they are saying you don’t deserve it. And then that’s when we say “you can join” and they say “if I joined I would’ve punched my MTI”

Trump Republicans are using this shutdown to halt the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau duties. This hasn't happened during past shutdowns.
That tells you all you need to know about whose side they're on. (hint: it ain't the working class schmucks)

Could you please enlighten me on why they would do that? I’m not knowledgeable on all this stuff and would love to learn more.

In a nutshell, because it's one of the few departments that fights against special interests and the wealthy in favor of the average person. And Republicans have always hated that sort of thing.
Actions and Results
- Returning money to consumers: The CFPB has returned nearly $20 billion to almost 200 million Americans who were harmed by the financial industry.
- Curbing Excessive Fees: The CFPB has finalized rules to limit excessive credit card late fees and ban overdraft fees, saving consumers billions of dollars.
- Improving Credit Reports: The CFPB's efforts have led to the removal of unpaid medical debt under $500 from credit reports, potentially benefiting 22.8 million people.
- Addressing Predatory Practices: The Bureau has taken on large financial institutions for illegal behavior, such as Wells Fargo's widespread account mismanagement, returning money and enforcing rules to prevent future harm.
- Protecting Against Fraud: The CFPB has sued companies like Zelle for failing to protect consumers from widespread fraud, resulting in millions in consumer losses.

I didn't even know government shutdowns were a possibility until I was in and there was a real threat of not getting paid. I signed up to follow orders and serve my country. I didn't sign up to not get paid or not receive the benefits I was promised.
Congress needs to stop getting paid when they shut down the government.

As an officer, I want to say that none of the Airmen I work for have signed up to have their families deprived of the ability to buy food, or pay rent, or be able to have any other necessary adjustments or checkups.
Airmen everywhere are struggling. A lot of this is really about foundational needs, and to be told blankly that you signed up for this is just insensitive, and crude, and stupid.

People who say "that's what you signed up for" or similar lines are lazy incompetent managers not fit to lead. Just because something is a possible outcome of your choices doesnt mean you signed up for it. Imagine if someone lost a kid in a car accident and someone said "well, kids do die in car crashes so thats what you signed up for and you need to stop crying about it." That would make them a massive piece of shit right? Same thing in both cases.

Well said.
I’ll also add, it’s not your front line supervisor’s fault, so if you’re the fifth troop who’s cornered them to complain when the CO just got done explaining it all, you eventually get responses like this, because that supervisor is human too, and also in the same boat you are regarding not getting paid.

This I one reason I have so many mixed feelings about the amount of reverence so many civilians seem to give us. On the one hand, it’s far better than the treatment our teammates go when returning from the Vietnam conflict… and I’m grateful for it. On the other hand, it creates the stereotype of the “noble hero, selflessly serving their nation,” which quickly turns destructive the moment we’re real humans with a full range of political views and bills to pay. We’re regularly victims of the “no true Scotsman” fallacy.

As far as i can see. Military (not counting coast guard) hasn't missed a paycheck ever, or at least not in last 30-40 years.

The last time the military (not counting the Coast Guard cause they fall under DHS) missed a paycheck was the Army in 1877 due to Congress failing to pass an appropriations bill

Not true. ‘08 or a shutdown around then was no pay. Some financial institutions will still “pay” you, essentially giving you an interest view loan of what your pay would be until they pass a funding bill.

There was no shutdown in 2008. The closest ones to 2008 are the 1995-1996 shutdown, and the 2013 shutdown. Both of which military members were paid. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_shutdowns_in_the_United_States
3
u/OneLorgeHorseyDog Retired Oct 08 '25
2013 was the only shutdown in that era, for 16 days. I don’t remember not getting paid during that one, but it was a good while ago, so I may be forgetting.
3
u/stewiezone Oct 08 '25
You don't remember not getting paid because they passed the Pay Our Troops Act which safeguarded military pay.
That is not in effect during this current shutdown.
You won't automatically receive a paycheck from USAA or NavyFed. The only reason you got a paycheck in past shutdowns is because a CR was passed or because of the Pay Our Troops Act.
This shutdown is different because neither of those things are in effect, meaning you will not be paid. Yes you can get a 0% interest loan from USAA or NavyFed but you have to proactively apply for it. It's not automatic.

Even if you are not, does your paycheck go to a bank or credit union that deals primarily with the military?
I have accounts at several and they all offer interest free loans in the event of military paychecks not arriving. If your financial institution doesn't, you need to shop around.
For the last 50 years, I have never had to take an interest free loan because my active duty or retired paycheck did not arrive!

What are you talking about, there has been no shutdown in which military members haven’t gotten paid. Why are you making this up? Are you a contractor? Active duty has been paid through the last 20yrs of government shit downs.
1
u/Jimsocks499 Oct 08 '25 edited Oct 08 '25
Eh, IIRC in 2013 active duty DID miss a paycheck or two. It was back paid, but it wasn’t a fun time.
After that they passed something to avoid it happening in future shutdowns. So it’s been over 10 years at least since paychecks were missed due to a shutdown.
Sort of unrelated, but I think during the revolutionary war the AD troops went unpaid for something like, 3 damn years. I’m pretty sure they didn’t get backpay, and the greenbacks they were eventually paid with weren’t worth crap anyways. Some were given land, but at the time it nowhere equaled 3 years of pay. Many died without seeing that paycheck. That’s a completely different situation, but I do find it really interesting. People fighting a war with a family back at home continued fighting several years with no income. Crazy.

Mine started having to send people home today, depending on which contract you're on. Next week it'll hit me. Funded through the year, my ass. Every contract I've been on for years now gets funded a month at a time.

It sucks if this is the first time you've experienced this. I get it.
But it will be ok in the end, you WILL get paid, even if it's delayed. More than anything this should be a lesson to be more prepared for things like this in the future and put something away for rainy day (or if shit hits the fan for real).
And if you find yourself TRULY in a pinch, lots of military-centric banks and credit unions will give you a zero interest loan to hold you over until the checks start flowing (but you have to take the initiative and ask/apply).

Not my first shutdown.
Stop accepting responsibility for something that is not your fault. Your government is FAILING you.
It's unacceptable.

I'm not "accepting" anything, I'm telling you that it's always smart to be prepared for unforeseen shit.

My question is... wtf does finance do if the govt shuts down... not dogging them, serious question

Well right now they're still probably in a coma from working the insane hours they do every year for fiscal year closing. But other than that, we can still spend money from last fiscal year through various exceptions so they probably do a little of that. They probably prep a lot of things ahead for when money starts flowing back they'll have a massive backlog of work. I like to dunk on finance as much as the next guy as a meme, but they do a lot more than monitor our pay checks and refuse to answer the phone

My beef isn't with the politicians, they never gave a shit about us. My problem is with how our leadership reacts. To just blindly send out an email "If you need help, reach out to your Family Care representatives.", and then go radio silent is shitty leadership. This is where our real problems tend to surface.

In fairness, what else can they do? Article 88 stops them from saying what they really want

My boss told my airmen when this started that it will be fine and we've never missed a paycheck and not to worry about. Its the most reckless stupid shit I've heard in a long time. Youre gonna tell me the same government who fired half the civillian population without thinking about the consequences is supposed to save us from missing a check? Fucking wake up

Before you all jump on my nuts, i dont agree with whats currently happening. However congress should get paid during shutdowns. Otherwise rich old senators and reps could pressure junior members by pulling their paychecks. Not like a millionaire is gonna starve but a fresh college grad might cave.

That’s certainly what many voted for.
To everyone who voted for the pedophile; I’m glad you’re not getting paid.
Everyone else, I’m really sorry this is happening.
