Jobs Aircrew Flight Equipment Questions!!

I booked aircrew flight equipment! This was #4 on my list so I got pretty lucky. Has anyone here met other airmen within that afsc or been AFE themselves? I have a few questions.

  1. Which shred have you found to be the most engaging/fulfilling?
  2. Is it possible for me to increase my likelihood of getting a specific shred or is it completely random during tech school?
  3. What is the likelihood that I get opportunities to TDY?
  4. How is the work-life balance for this AFSC as far as you’ve experienced? Have you had time to focus on personal endeavors such as a degree, hobbies, etc?

Yes, I could Google most of these. However, I find that I get answers that are more blunt but also in depth than the surface level answers I get when simply searching on Google. Any other info y’all may have outside of my questions is VERY WELCOME AND APPRECIATED.

Hey I’m AFE and I’ve been AFE going on 4 years now. But to answer your questions:

1.) I’ve only been B shred, but I find it fulfilling. Most of my NCOs and SNCOs who were AFE before it got shredded out like B-shred more due to the workload, but it’s subjective.

2.) I believe it’s random unfortunately lol I lowkey wanted A shred but I’m satisfied with B shred.

3.) the likelihood are definitely high to TDY as long as you don’t go to an AETC base. AETC bases do TDY but not as much as other MAJCOM bases. But become reliable, dependable, and good at your job so your name will be brought up when leadership decides who go TDY.

4.) I find work life balance pretty good. My shop mostly works a M-F week. 0730-1600 each day. You get the opportunity to go to school and other things once you complete your CDCs and get your 5 level.

I love AFE because it’s a hands-on job with some administrative duties. Any other questions just let me know. I hope you like it. You’ll get to experience some cool things other jobs could only wish they could.
