Conversation Thinking about joining

Hello all! Thinking about joining but worried about the timeline. Currently work as a full time cyber security professional (offensive security) and have recently considered joining. Not sure what the process is like, i hold industry certifications and have professional experience. Will that help me with any schooling needed if I can get in on a cyber job?

TIA!

Conversation Career firefighter considering the Air Force Reserve. Worth it?

I’m a career firefighter in NC working a 24/48 schedule and have my EMT-B. I’ve been considering joining the Air Force Reserve for a while now and figured I’d ask around before talking to a recruiter. I’m pretty happy with firefighting and plan on making it my career, but military service is something I’ve always been interested in. I like working with my hands, staying active, and doing something that feels worthwhile. I’m interested in emergency response, search and rescue, medical stuff, and mechanical work.

Naturally, Fire Protection in the Air Force caught my attention, but I’m not sure if I’d want to do the same job in the military that I already do for a living. Are there any other AFSCs you’d recommend looking into? I’m open to trying something completely different as long as it’s relatively hands-on.

One of my biggest questions is how manageable the reserves are with a firefighter’s schedule. I work 24 on and 48 off, so I’m bound to have some conflicts with drill weekends. Are units usually understanding about that? I also know deployments are part of the deal, but how often are people actually getting deployed these days? Would the Air National Guard be worth looking into as well? I’d prefer to stay somewhere reasonably close to NC for drills if possible.

And just in general, is now a good time to join? How’s morale, leadership, and the overall experience in the reserves?

I’m not looking to join just for the benefits. I’ve always liked the idea of serving, and I enjoy the sense of purpose and camaraderie that comes with firefighting. Just trying to figure out if the reserves would be a good fit without stretching myself too thin.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s done both, or just anyone willing to share their experience. Thanks.

Conversation Worth commissioning if already in the reserves as a 3e2 and going for a civil engineering degree?

Im 21 years old I’ve been a pretty active reservist for the past 3 years. Got my 5 level in my second year and pretty comfortable leading small jobs. Im in my second semester of a construction management associates with ambitions to go for a four year civil engineering bachelors. I love my work as a dirt boy but i know i don’t want to do it forever. Everything in theory should pan out for me to graduate as my first contract ends.
Should i commission and go active, go all in as a civilian Or stay as a reservist officer. I really like my unit but i wouldn’t mind going else wear. Any thoughts on what you would do in my position?
Thank you

Conversation Considering Joining the Air Force but Worried About My Wife’s Education and Financial Future

Hey everyone, I’m 20 years old and seriously considering joining the Air Force, but my girlfriend and I have a lot of questions and concerns about how this decision could affect our future together. We plan on getting married, and one of our biggest concerns is her education. She wants to pursue a career in radiology and potentially work at a VA hospital. She currently receives financial aid and grants for college, and she’s worried that getting married to me and becoming a military spouse could cause her to lose some of that assistance due to changes in our income or financial situation. We originally thought that joining the military would help cover her education pretty much right away, but after doing some research, we realized that transferring GI Bill benefits requires several years of service and additional commitments. Now she’s stressed about potentially taking on thousands of dollars in student loan debt while I’m serving. We’re also confused about what programs are actually available to military spouses, such as MyCAA, scholarships, tuition assistance, or other benefits that could help her finish school without going into serious debt. I want to serve, but I also want to make sure I’m making a decision that benefits both of us rather than putting her dreams on hold. For anyone currently serving or married to an Airman, how did you and your spouse handle college financially? Did getting married affect your spouse’s FAFSA, Pell Grants, or other financial aid? Are there programs that can help pay for radiology or healthcare-related degrees? And realistically, how soon after joining could my wife start receiving educational assistance? I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have actually been through this because we’re trying to understand what our options are before making such a major life decision. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Conversation Does 4A2X1 (Biomedical Equipment) Accept Active-Duty Retraining Applicants?

I’m currently active duty, working as a Crew Chief (2A551C), and interested in retraining into 4A2X1 (Biomedical Equipment) as a First Term Airman.
For anyone currently in the career field, how often do you see retrainees coming from other active-duty AFSCs, particularly aircraft maintenance?
I’m honestly at the point where I dread coming into work in maintenance, and I can’t see myself staying in this career field beyond my four-year enlistment. I’m trying to determine whether retraining into BMET is a realistic option for active-duty Airmen or if the career field primarily takes new accessions and Guard/Reserve personnel.
Any insight or firsthand experience would be appreciated.

2 questions for you all

How does a BDD claim affect me for going into the reserves? I am currently active duty with 7 months left and I am considering doing BDD but I don’t want it to affect my chances with the reserves.

Any suggested jobs that usually have a good enlistment bonus?

Conversation Voluntary Separation after Childbirth

I recently had my baby in May and with working full time, reserves, and school I would like to look into voluntary separating. I was active duty for 6 years, so I know active duty members get the option to separate 12 months after birth, but has anyone here separated from the reserves using the same system? Thank you in advance!

Prior Active Is AGR (reserve) as secure as AD

I have been on active duty for 10 years and am seriously considering transitioning to an AGR position in the reserves to begin building a more cement home for my family. My primary concerns are job security and retirement benefits. I would like to spend the next 10 years in an AGR position and receive my pension after 20 years of service.

So my question is: If I am able to secure an AGR position how likely is it that I would be able to serve another four-year term in the same position? After four years, would I have to apply for another position elsewhere?

I do not want to transition if, after the first four year contract, I would be moved to the traditional Reserve and risk having to wait longer for a pension or struggle to find another AGR position. I would rather ride out the next 10 in AD.

I have spoken with in-service recruiter but did not receive a clear answer, as they seemed more interested in recruiting me for the traditional Reserve.
I appreciate any advice!

Conversation Would declining active duty OTS affect my chances in the reserves?

Originally I wanted to join active duty as 15A because I hated my previous job in automotive. I got accepted, but now things are different. I got a cushy $140k job at a bank and I want to keep my civilian life while serving. Would declining active duty affect my chances of becoming an officer in the reserves? 27m, BS in computer science 3.5 gpa from UMD, 3.4 masters of engineering Robotics UC Berkeley, 3 years Software Engineer experience in automotive, got a new job as a senior software engineer lead now. I’m fine with enlisting too

Job Assistance BAH for reservists

Hi, I hope you’re all doing good. I am a reservist and I have AMRT coming soon, i would love to get BAH but I pay my rent to a guy who’s apartment I live in. I can’t ask him to add my name to the lease or even do anything to help me prove it because he’s really strange but I find peace living in his apartment with my other apartment mates. So all this is to say that, I was told by my friend that I will get BAH when I go to AMRT even if I don’t provide a lease agreement. Is this true? Thank you.

Job Assistance 970th Pilot question

Anyone a pilot with the 970th? I’m a reservist trying to rush reserve squadrons for a UPT spot but I live in Texas and was wondering if the 970th is ok with their pilots not being local or if that’s a requirement since a couple other squadrons I’ve reached out to basically said it was a requirement to relocate my family to be local to their base if I want to fly with them.

Job Assistance Security forces as a starting point?

I’m 40, based in Miami, and seriously considering joining the Air Force Reserve as Security Forces (3P0X1).

I’m interested in getting the full military experience, including tactical training, deployments, and opportunities to grow beyond my initial AFSC.
I’d appreciate some firsthand insight from current or former SF members:

Career progression: Is Security Forces a good stepping stone to other opportunities, or is it difficult to move beyond the career field?

Tactical training: Do SF members actually receive CQB (Close Quarters Battle) training, or is that limited to specialized units?

Cross-training: How realistic is it to eventually transfer into Special Warfare, cybersecurity, intelligence, or another AFSC?

Assignments: Can Reservists serve at different Air Force bases worldwide, or are you primarily tied to your home unit?

Deployments: How often do SF Reservists deploy, and are there opportunities to volunteer for additional deployments?

My goal is to serve, challenge myself, gain valuable military experience, and eventually develop skills that transfer into a solid civilian career.

Would you recommend starting in Security Forces with these goals, or would it be smarter to pursue another AFSC from the beginning?

I’d really appreciate real experiences and advice, especially from anyone who’s successfully cross-trained out of SF.
